I can tell you that from my perspective, in France, this winter is especially hot, so far we have been almost constantly 5-10°C above the normal temps for this season.
Yeah, I saw a meteorological map and Scandinavia is the only place in Europe that hasn't been following the general weather trend. During the summer, it was hot in most of Europe, but in Scandinavia it was surprisingly colder than usual, rainy weather and during early december and parts of november it was really cold and lots of snow. In the past 2 weeks it has been fairly okay weather sitting at around 0c to +8c and from -15c to -5c in middle to northern Sweden.
South of France, near the Mediterranean Sea, this 1st of January seems to be a 1st April. At 2 pm we had to lower the blinds : it was too hot and sunny.

I've been waiting for a new Volvo test and saw recently that Car Scanner can now be used on the OBD. I have the XC40 Twin 2021 First Edition, and it has been superb. Your previous testing helped with the decision. I like the higher seating, the better view, the comfort and the flat loading to the rear ... but the real main thing I like is the Android Automotive with built in Google Maps plus the Scandinavian simplicity. For me it is the overall driving experience on a daily basis that matters rather than splitting hairs over consumption. Would be interesting to see how the RWD Long Range compares. Happy New Year Bjorn 🙃
I agree with all you said as I also like compact SUVs. But the high consumption means range is not great. If you use it for shorter trips then it does not matter. If you use it for longer drives then it will bother you.
You say it's a really cold winter in all of Europe but here in Belgium it's been kinda warm... it hasn't even frozen yet not even once! 😂 what the heck
AWD, 130 km/h, 22 degrees in the coupe and 20" tires explains the high consumption. But I understand that it is to be able to compare with the other 1000km tests. However maybe not representative of how most people use their cars. I have a 2024 RWD with 19" wheels and have driven from Stockholm to the north of Sweden in winter climat when snowing with a consumption of 235kwh/100km. Driving according to the speed limits or slightliy below when heavy traffic and 18 degrees temperature in the coupe, which i find adequate when wearing winter clothing. But with that said not the best car if hammering it on the motorway. But that is not why I bought the car. It has other qualities. I like the fact that it is short and high which is the opposite of what is needed for good aerodynamics, which is very low on my priority list.
Drove from Trysil to Malmö the other day, the detour at Stenungsund is still there 😅 No projected enddate. It is “quick clay” that caused the mudslide so they have to secure areas around it aswell so it does not happen again.
The 14 degree Celsius difference is more than sufficient for a 10% increase of energy consumption. It would have been a sub 10h:30m run with an average temperature of around 6 degrees.
Assuming all loss is due to aerodynamic drag. Rolling resistance, internal resistance (batteries), motor efficiency are among other factors dependent on temp. While a significant range increase is very likely, 10% is probably too much. Air is 15% denser at -20°C than 20°C, if 90% of the resistance is due to aerodynamic drag (rest near constant and mostly rolling resistance), the difference excluding everything else would be closer to 5%. I think Bjørn is in the neighborhood with the 10:30 guess :)
I'm in Alberta, Canada. Can say this years winter is strange! Your colder, we are warmer. Xmas last year we were at -39c, this year it was +10c! My kids were gutted not having a white Xmas! 😅
I like your real-world tests, but I think it does not make too much sense to compare cars directly when the temperature is so different. I would suggest that you really pick at least one car and test it under different conditions. Try this Volvo at summer conditions. I agree with you that you will get a way better time. Maybe also at rainy whether. That way, we get a better understanding of how much the conditions affect driving. Last summer, I drove with my Polestar 2 from Stockholm to my favorite Ionity station at Granna and almost ran out of juice since it was raining. The consumption was way higher than normal.
My Polestar 2, MY 22, 69 kWh, charged 10 - 80% @ 2°C in 25 minutes. It now always charges 10-80% in 25 mins which is 3 minutes faster than it was sold to us as charging. I haven't ever tried it below freezing. Only ever at or about 0°C. But at those temps or above, not a trace of "coldgate". Also, peak is 140kW pretty consistently, which it holds for up to 6 minutes. There is a bit of cycling with small drops to 135, but several times, it will recover to 140 kW again. I neither know what you do to get the (dreadful) efficiency values from these cars, nor what happens to you when charging. On the MY24 Polestar, I think the 20" wheels made a huge difference, and you had no problems with charging. Just efficiency. Our car has been right across France and back in the summer, where the cruise control was set to 135 kmh. We were never worse than 21.5 kWh / 100km AFAIR. The car was full. 4 people and luggage for 3 weeks holiday. This Christmas, in a flood, and into a gale, right through Central Germany all the way to the South, although many speed restrictions, and unable to drive > 110 kmh for the first half due to safety, we still got 23.5 kWh/100km. Coming back at mostly 130 kmh when possible, we got 21 kWh/100km. 19" wheels but winter tyres.
Good video. From the data it appears the drivetrain is a bit more efficient. Your efficiency numbers are similar to the previous XC40 but at much cooler temperatures. As for the weather I'm guessing you are getting some type of Polar Vortex. Air shifting over from the polar region. This is actually caused by climate change. One area gets well below seasonal temperatures but everywhere else is well above. Here in Southern Ontario Canada we are 5-10K above seasonal right now and my grass is green. I've never seen it this warm this consistently this time of the year.
Swedish route is the best one 😊 Just dont drive thru Ucklum around 15-18 mon-fri and it will go pretty fast. Next time maybe you should put in a picture of the landslide in the video. It will take 2-3 years to repair the road. There is a few new Mer fast chargers at Torp köpcentrum close to Coop. Very close to highway if you need to stop there.
Even 4 years may be a possible scenario according to some... It's really messing up everything around the entire area, including commuting from the islands to work in to Stenungsund for me 😞 Strange that it shall take so long to fix some hundreds of meter flat highway when they managed to re-build the entire bridge from Tjörn to Stenungsund in just 17 months after it was rammed by Star Clipper...
@@Buickrm It's the slippery clay layer underneath the surface layers of soil which is screwing everything up. They will have to stabilize huge areas (by sinking poles into the ground I suspect) around the road to prevent another landslide. This will take a lot of time.
As always a great video. The consumption is pretty ridiculous for that rather low speed (120kmh is far below the speed limit here in CZ, leave alone Germany) even at the very low temperature. Quality is great though...

The question is, how much of this and following Volvo EVs are actual swedish, the XC40 plattform by Geely is used at Lynk 01, Geely Xingyue and Polestar 2. The XC40 is built in Belgium, too.
XC30 will initially be built in China, but I believe Geely has said that high demand will lead to the car being built here as well (probably the Ghent plant in Netherlands where XC40 is built now). I believe the larger models will be built at the Torslanda plant in Göteborg, just like today's gasser models are.
Yes, me too, will test drive the ex30 this friday, but really love to see Björn his take on it befor I commit to the ex30, at the moment my shortlist is model 3 highland SR, KIA EV6 or EX30

Watching your video from Cadiz, where I went surfing at roughly 19 Celsius today, I must disagree. This has been one of the warmest summers of Andalusian history.
It's so nice that the navigation if good. The quality and comfort are Volvo. But that consumption is crazy. It is a compact suv and not so aerodinamic but there must be something wrong in the electric area.
Not really that cold in central Europe. You might have colder than usual locally, but there is no pan-european cold wave. Above average temperatures here if anything, not even freezing most of the time unless you go to higher places 🙂
Hello Bjorn, I saw in one of your videos you are using the phone and you can see car info, Probably using OBD, can you let us know which OBD are you using and which app on the phone?. Thx
Will the updated Polestar 2 receive the same, fast loading, 82 kWh battery for the AWD variant together with the more efficient motors? And yeah... I was wandering what happened to the DSPs in the recent 1000 km challenges... seems that we found out! :) Enjoy!
Would be nice to see if you could test the c40 in this environment. It‘ll probably be a clearer indicator of how much the aerodynamics are hindering the efficiency.
Swings and roundabouts. Has it got a poor range because the battery size, extra weight and vehicle inefficiencies? Or has it got a bigger battery because of the poor range and vehicle inefficiencies?
In resume only 2 cars are acceptable the ID3 62kw and the 2023 Citroen eC4 all the others are s….t caring around expensive and useless batteries for nothing which is desastrouse from resources point of view and a pure waist of money buying such vehicles. Your reviews are excellent and your xls spreadsheet is great as it shows the facts nothing but the facts! Keep on I really like your reviews.
@@katchaontheflipside simple fact that from the list these 2 vehicles make as good or better than others caring batteries that have 20 to 30 kw more capacity wish means resources weight and money payed for nothing 🧐
Bjorn, why did the Volvo C40 (2022) do the test in 10:35, and the XC40 from 2020 took 12:15? Both have 78kWh batteries I believe, and they are essentially the same car, the slight aerodynamic advantage of the C40 is pretty insignificant/minimal. It just seems that your XC40 78kWh test took an oddly inconsistent amount of time as compared to the C40, and I would expect those times to be similar/same.
XC40 in 2020 coldgated and charged quite slow. It was wet and cold outside. C40 got the updated 150 kW flatter charging curve and it was not so cold outside. Btw, my name is Bjørn, not Born.
It's still way slower than the so much cheaper Citroën e-c4. I was comparing it side by side with an old version of the Kia eNiro (also much cheaper) and what surprised me, the back seats of the Kia were much more comfy. Otherwise it is really a great car, looking forward for the ex30 tests.
Would the charging speed improve if you went deeper? Indeed, in summer the challenge will take 10:30 or less. Looking forward to the single motor long range test too. These seats are upholstered in real wool - also a nice Swedish touch.
@@NikzeeL I'm from Finland and my C40 MY24 side and rear windows and roof windows are fogged up every day when the outside temperature is 0...-20˚C. Only using the maximum defrost will completely remove the fog in about 10 minutes.
Good time, an autobahn cruiser such as lowly VW Passat TDI (way less expensive than this Volvo) would do it in 8 hours without breaking a swet but that time for an EV is OK. Holding on on my diesel Passat for the time being. Awaiting the Sodium battery equiped much cheaper EVs (regarding current EVs, why would I pay more for less range ?).
Can you do a video about the status of the Easee charger situation? It’s not clear to me if they will survive, despite having an awesome product. Peter Esse, the Swedish tech RUclipsr has been trash talking Easee.
Honest question. When on a road trip, doesn’t these constant long charging pauses become exhausting/irritating? If you’re driving 120 km/h they become quite frequent. Stopping and charging every 2.5 h for 30 min just seems as a step back in terms of human development.
You have to ask yourself on how many days a year you do these exhausting distances and on how many days a year you enjoy the superior driving comfort in daily driving. Not everyone is lucky enough to switch already yet to EV without some limitations.
Well quite often, every 2 months at least not counting business trips. However, I don’t see how it is superior driving over my BMW 550i? Have driven a Tesla recently and I liked it but stating that it is superior driving is just not the case.
@@Libbbo so its easy for you, just stick to your BMW, its a nice car. Btw: it makes no sense to compare a Tesla with the BMW. You have to compare the i5 then you probably feel the superior driving in my meaning.
That's a good question. I've done a couple of ~2000 km trips (driving time about 2,5 days) already, and I don't mind having a small break (like 20-ish minutes) every 2 hours, even though driving a comfy EV. And - how often do you really drive these long stretches. Anyway in a couple of years, the ranges are again longer "by default" so the issue will slowly just vanish.

Not really that cold in central Europe. You might have colder than usual locally, but there is no pan-european cold wave.
Above average temperatures here if anything, not even freezing most of the time unless you go to higher places 🙂
yeah in the Baltics it is rather warm, lots of rain now but I hear the cold front is coming next week, but it will only be maybe -9 during day
Det finns nya laddare vid kongahälla kungälv nu! Ionity 20 st!!! Ladda där nästa gång!!
Loved it Bjorn. When will you get the 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5? I'd love to see if its changed.
14 degrees colder than the old run with same efficiency, ill say its approx 15% more efficient than the old car
Hello Bjorn, I saw in one of your videos you are using the phone and you can see car info, Probably using OBD, can you let us know which OBD are you using and which app on the phone?. Thx
It's not cold all over Europe. In Germany we hat 13° today.
Here in Belgium it's also warm for the time of the year. It's around 10C normally it would be around 3C.
Here in Prague there was a slight worry about flooding because areas which feed the Vltava river have been raining instead of snowing.
are you in Hamburg?
Will the updated Polestar 2 receive the same, fast loading, 82 kWh battery for the AWD variant together with the more efficient motors?
And yeah... I was wandering what happened to the DSPs in the recent 1000 km challenges... seems that we found out! :) Enjoy!
Keep the brick, we can’t have all EV’s looking the same just for a bit of extra range.
I'll look forward to the big Kia EV9 which as big as it is, has better drag co-efficiency, but nice to know it is a lot better than the last version.
The frontal size will be higher for the EV9?
I see you have Easee charger. Have you talked about it in any video regarding the sales freeze in Sweden?
"Cold all over in Europe" - not in Poland :]
We have rain now, hah
Would be nice to see if you could test the c40 in this environment. It‘ll probably be a clearer indicator of how much the aerodynamics are hindering the efficiency.
Ønsker meg mer snø og vinterkjøring. ikke bare bar asfalt. Hvordan de er på vinterføre.

Bjorn, when will youbyet your hands on a BYD Seal? Have they been released in Norway?
Do you need an adapter to charge non tesla car using tesla super charger?
Where can I find the 1000km challenge excel chart? It seems not to be in the linked Google Drive...
Sweden route again 👍👍😊😀
Niice, Bjorn is Bauss!
Swings and roundabouts. Has it got a poor range because the battery size, extra weight and vehicle inefficiencies? Or has it got a bigger battery because of the poor range and vehicle inefficiencies?
Does that XC40 have a heat pump, maybe it uses a PTC heater for battery preconditioning cause such a high consumption?
It has heat pump.
Bjorn goes to the dark side and becomes a left lane hugger.😂
What does colgating mean? (Coldgating?)
When are you going to Thailand? I wonder how charging infastructure improved over last year
Next winter.
How did u come to this conclusion?😂 And why isnt the model 3 an option as it beats both your examples.
@@katchaontheflipside simple fact that from the list these 2 vehicles make as good or better than others caring batteries that have 20 to 30 kw more capacity wish means resources weight and money payed for nothing 🧐
@@luisc9652 So they are as good and have bigger batteries? What are u on about? I'm getting a headache
It’d cold in Europe in late December? I’m shocked! 😂
@@bjornnylandbut you were born at some point Bjørn 😂
He would have to change his name to Cupra Born😂
Bjørn, should you deduct ca 15min? then the time is 10:40, I guess 😊
I didn't start at midnight.
@@bjornnyland sorry, I missed that
Damn thirsty SUV bricks - efficient sedans are way better 👍🏻
It's still way slower than the so much cheaper Citroën e-c4. I was comparing it side by side with an old version of the Kia eNiro (also much cheaper) and what surprised me, the back seats of the Kia were much more comfy. Otherwise it is really a great car, looking forward for the ex30 tests.
the e-C4's 1000km run was at - on average - 24°C higher temperatures (read: closer to the optimum for EVs at around 20..25°C)
What App (Android or iPhone) did you use as an OBD port reader?
Had like 360 kW charger like trucks 😎
*360 kW
You've stolen all the cold from Ontario Canada. I want it back so my ski hills open, so sick of endless rain...
We could split. 😉 -40 estimates here in 🇫🇮 for the first week of 2024.
Would the charging speed improve if you went deeper? Indeed, in summer the challenge will take 10:30 or less. Looking forward to the single motor long range test too. These seats are upholstered in real wool - also a nice Swedish touch.
Yes, but hard to estimate.
Between this new XC40 Recharge AWD or the new Q4 55 e-tron quattro...very hard to choose.
That shelf call it what you want where the gear shifter is i ugly on the audi. Ruins the whole interior.
Did your rear side windows get foggy?
No
@@bjornnyland Okay funny because many xc40/c40 users in Finland have reported about foggy windows, me included.
Did you use eco mode?
@@NikzeeL I'm from Finland and my C40 MY24 side and rear windows and roof windows are fogged up every day when the outside temperature is 0...-20˚C.
Only using the maximum defrost will completely remove the fog in about 10 minutes.
No I dont use it. Also Cleanzone sensor is disabled too. Still gets foggy, especially when speed decreases.
XC40 VS C40 you think?
Google for the win.
I almost find it funny calling 120km/h on a highway, "hammering it".
Legacy automaker consumption
Orrefors "crystal" gear selector.
No, Björn has driven the swedish route with a diesel car. It took 9 hours.
It almost seems, as if the front drive wasn’t decoupled at any time?
How could you tell?
Kör du på själva julafton? Det är seriöst
Do I look Christian to you?
Yes but your average speed between those 2 cars are also big. 10km/h is very much.
That's the speed including charging. Cruising speed is exactly the same.
Can you do a video about the status of the Easee charger situation? It’s not clear to me if they will survive, despite having an awesome product. Peter Esse, the Swedish tech RUclipsr has been trash talking Easee.
Peter Esse has done several RUclips videos on that topic.
@@jan-olovpersson7912 yes I know, but he seems one sided on the view. As on the Tesla union discussion.
If you want I can come and paint your garage and you could borrow my EV9 and do some videos 🎉
I am an XC40 Recharge owner and am listening while doing Sat morn chores. I will chime in again when I can sit and watch, but I had to pop in to say. You can't tell us all to drive EVs and then complain when global warming gets fixed and winter is cold again. Sw to dinosaur juice ones if you want it warm in the winter again. ;-) Love the content. Will chime in as an XC40 Recharge owner. Lots of good stuff.
Best scene 15:05 😂😂
