    I'm telling you. The more I leave the plants and soil alone, the better my garden looks. I use a lot of very high quality compost here and there and throw a little Plantone out in March, but that's about it. Jim is spot on. Get your soil good, try not to bring any new dirt or stuff into your space, and don't worship 10 dollar plants if they don't work for you and that's that! Jim, you have totally transformed the way me and my 93yo father garden. In my father's life, people always worried about the plant and over fertilized them to death. Now, we make the soil healthy and the plants grow perfect! This is the only garden channel anybody needs!

    There's always a company willing to get you to pay for services or products that will almost ensure you'll need further intervention. It's a hard thing to learn to be patient and do less. The horticulture industry isn't alone in this approach. I no longer watch channels that show spectacular landscapes but don't talk about how much help they have. Thanks for keeping it real!

      @@jessicawery3939 I feel like it actually hurts the industry. People get disappointed that they can't achieve the results that they see because they don't have companies giving their products for free and staff paid for by their channels and endorsements. • @MelodyHopkins
      @MelodyHopkins 4 месяца назад +2

      Landscaping rocks and boulders must go deep into the earth. This allows them to sit well without shifting dangerously over time and also gives a natural, long-lasting look. The size and shape of a boulder will determine how deep it needs to go into the ground.

    Speaking of fertilizing: i did a cheap soil test this spring and it said my soil was pretty deficient in EVERYTHING…WELL, personally that was hard for me to believe, because over the years, I have amended frequently with composted manure when planting my perennials. But anyway, I decided to look into getting some rabbit manure..I did, and it was the best thing ever! My flowers are the best they’ve looked in a long time! I guess those rascally rabbits are good for something!

    you mentioned that the bottom third of the soil in planters stays rather wet, and may lead to disease issues that would not be present in ground soil. This seems to have consequences for those "self-watering" pots, and aquapots, that intend for the bottom of the container to hold water, and have a core of soil in the middle through which water is supposed to wick up to the plants. Would this water-disease issue be particularly a problem for these types of pots? thanks.

    Great Q&A as always! There are two points in your videos that I’ve dealt with already this year. 1. Almost every lawn maintenance company wants to put lime down but I know it doesn’t need it. I have amended the soil and had it tested but any of these maintenance companies still tell me I need lime. 2. There is no potting soil in the city I live in that doesn’t have fertilizer. I’ve checked every available store and it’s always the same. There’s always fertilizer.
    Honestly I think that’s because containers seem to need more fertilizer. I grow old fashioned petunias in containers every year and it really doesn’t matter what potting soil I get, I still have to fertilize because they’re heavy feeders. It’s a huge difference compared to the superpetunias I plant in the ground. I can get away with two feedings but I lean towards three.

      It definitely can be exhausting. What I’ve learned is that, depending on where you live, timing of some garden tasks can have a huge impact on how exhausting it is. Last year I started planting and edging beds while it was hot and dry and it was nearly impossible because the soil was hard as a rock. This year those same tasks after 6” of rain were like cutting through butter lol

      I don't believe so. They're both able to give most of their time to their small lot and the way it's planted, maintenance is minimal. Combined decades of experience has definitely helped give them a beautiful space they can maintain. Jobs they hire out are tree work that requires climbers or bucket trucks. We highly recommend getting one of Jim's consultations spots if anyone is on the fence about this. Even done via a video phone chat, we got great input from Jim and created a beautiful deer deterrent north path. Looks like it's been here for years. Question for next week: we have a drift of Everillo carex that is continually grazed on by rabbits. We've tried rabbit sprays and sprinkles plus live trap relocation. Approx 3 of 7 are damaged. They've been in the ground for about a year and a half, so not new. Is it time to give up? They are such a gorgeous accent to a bit of a shady area along a path. But, we feel ready to give up. In the winter time, we put a cage of chicken wire over that area. It's ugly. Wouldn't want to do that the rest of the year. Any ideas?

      I've experienced this issue. I lift the cover and put a square of filter fabric over the top of the pipe coupler. Replace the grate, do all your dirt work and water everything in after planting. You can easily lift the cap and empty anything that has washed in. You can also leave filter fabric in place for a few seasons and check occasionally to clean out.

    Jim, there's a big push by so many RUclips gardeners to use a starter fertilizer enhanced with beneficial microbes & mycorrhizae. A soil scientist I follow on RUclips says that your soil already contains as much of these things as it can support and if you want to increase them, you have to feed them with more organic material. Do you believe that adding this starter fertilizer is beneficial in any way when planting or transplanting new plants in the ground? How about in containers? I notice that despite all the hype, you don't use it.

      A comment in regards to several statements about plants acting strangely this growing season. I also have a Beyond Midnight caryopteris in full bloom now that I planted in my zone 9a Gulf Coast garden last fall. And regarding a comment I made recently about my White Wedding hydrangea that is acting strange, it leafed out on 3 tiny outside branches about the first of April, but there has been no sign of leaves on the main branches from last year until this past week. Now it has some new leaf buds coming out in mid May. I kept hope alive because all the growth from last year which was the first season for it was still green. Do you have any idea what is going on here? I'm guessing that I won't get flowers this year like last summer. I wanted to buy a couple more to go with it, but have hesitated. My Lil' Honey oakleaf hydrangea is glorious this year.

    Jim, I really appreciate how objectively you provide gardening information. You are a true resource. Some of the other popular gardening RUclips channels are obvious commercials (often for PW). I am so over the superficial sales pitches that reflect a clear disregard for our planet (for example, over planting with water hungry plants upstream from communities desperate for water), or are just plan uninformed. Gardening companies (like all companies) set out to sell, sell, sell. Of course, everyone needs to earn a living, but I appreciate and respect that you are able to do so while helping home gardeners make good decisions for themselves, helping them see when they are being asked to buy something. Gardening is a verb- it is work. You show us all how to do the work (not just buy this thing). Kudos!

    For the Japanese/Asian plants question, look at it by climate rather than latitude. A common system for this is the Koppen Climate Classification. Most of the southeastern US is classified as a humid subtropical climate. If you go on Wikipedia and look up the 'humid subtropical climate' article, there's a map that shows other parts of the world with a similar climate.
    One of the biggest humid subtropical areas is in southeastern China and southern Japan, hence why so many of their plants do well here. Another big one is in South America around the Rio de la Plata region - Uruguay, northern Argentina, and southern Brazil. The eastern Australia coast is humid subtropical too. Something I've noticed is that if you look up videos on RUclips for our native southern magnolia, a LOT of them are actually from Australia, rather than the US.

    My common ninebark has put out explosive new growth this spring with tall thick green stems. The leaves are twice the size of the older parts of the plant. The new growth is not blooming. Is the ninebark very happy or very sad? Should the new growth be cut back to shape the plant or will that just encourage more? Zone 7A New Jersey

    • @waynem.7226
      @waynem.7226 4 месяца назад +1

      If you had good spring rains this year, that would explain the explosive, large new growth, but ninebark blooms mainly on old/last year's wood. It sounds happy and naturally has large arching branches but feel free to prune it to what pleases you. It'll likely put on just minimal growth the rest of the year.

      As the other poster said, ChipDrop can be a great way to get a load of chips for free. Just be sure you understand what you're getting yourself into. You're gonna get a huge pile of chips, and you're gonna have to do the work of spreading them around. You can also do a search for ' compost' and see if the city or county has a program where you can get mulch or compost for little or no cost.
      If you want someone else to do the work for you, well, call some local landscaping companies!

    so then, that leads me to a question.....Massachusetts zone 6 has had unbelievable rainfall starting from last july ( 2023) through today. I have never seen anything like it. or at least my part of the state. The year prior, we had a pretty intense drought and no snow through the course of the winter(2022). The year of the drought i never fertilized for evident reasons of not wanting the plants to suffer putting on growth with no rain. Last year I did not fertilize because every other day we had crazy amounts of rain. The clay soil here is at it max. Stepping on the soil causes the water to bubble up out of it in spots. I am a conifer girl a collector of sorts.. I have a horstman silberlocke Korean fir ( about 8 ft) and two blue spruces (about 18 FT) suffering out in the landscape because of the rain. I think i am loosing the leader on the fir and the two blue spruce have needle cast. would you fertiilize these tree's that are suffering? Or do i just cross my fingers and wait for dryer days before i do that? I know the rule of thumb with perennials is to fertilize despite the predicted weather. But loosing very mature conifers is a different story. And what would you choose for conifers to help them recover from this? I own a 90 acre farm so in the past they have gotten composted cow manure in the spring. But we are going back a couple years now since i have done this. Any help you can offer is very much appreciated........Thank you for your time Jim. Respectfully, ~Julie

    Hi Jim, question regarding container gardening during long stretches of damp weather. If you have a plant that doesn’t like wet feet in a container (i.e. Japanese Maple), would you take any special action if the forecast predicts rain for a long stretch where it isn’t allowed to dry out? This is assuming there is sufficient drainage hole(s), the pot is elevated, and using an appropriate fast draining soil mix. I’m in Central KY, right on the line of Zone 6B/7A, Heat Zone is also 6/7. Thank you!
