I started growing Dahlias about 4 years ago, thanks to you. ❤ I live in Iowa Zone 5a. I didn't have time to dig my Dahlias last year, we had such a mild winter that the ones on the South side right up against the house have come back. I'm so delighted ❤
Great Video Erin, I'm in the UK and Dahlias are my favourite too. I take mine out and store them and thanks to you, I now divide them and give them to my friends and family. Keep up the great work x
Thank you! I am in mid Michigan in zone 5b. I've always wanted to grow dahlias, but have not tried yet. This has helped me see them a bit differently and better understand their needs..... so when I do try, they'll have a better chance of survival and thriving.
Erin, it was a video you did 4 years ago that challenged my wife and I to grow Dahlias and we started with one plant that I bought while walking through Walmart and now we have a 20x60 cut flower garden! I would encourage everyone to give them a try and just see what happens. It's a whole new world of gardening when you add Dahlias to the mix. Just start a line item in your gardening budget and go for it!
Thanks Erin, Zone 8a NC. My friend and I were chatting about how much we love your channel because it’s real gardening not a show. I have just a few dahlias but I’m definitely interested in more as I don’t have to dig mine out each year. Also I do grow some from seed. 😊
Erin this is my first year planting tubers. They have already come up and starting to flower. I am so glad you reminded me of the typeof food they need. I did not know. I did compost.
I am a longtime Wisconsin 5b gardener. Your recommendation of Allegro Pink Melody Dahlia peaked my interest in dahlias. I enjoyed endless bouquets for the last two summers. I thought this video was just great. Well thought out, clear and easy to follow. Thanks for the inspiration and great information.
We planted two dahlias when we moved into this house four years ago…we lost one, but the other one has continued to come back every year, without me digging the tubers out. We are in zone 7b (or so they say!😅). I did mulch over it a couple years ago, and was glad because that winter was severe…however this past year I did not mulch and it’s coming back! I believe it’s called “sunset.” I’d like to plant more, and thanks to this video and your tips I’m going to do just that!
Thank you so much for this informative video! I purchased my first dahlia tubers this year, some online, and some at big box stores. I started them in my greenhouse and it sounds like I am at the pinching stage. Thanks again Erin!
Great video Erin , I’ve been growing Dahlias for only 3 years and had good success with overwintering them in my basement . This year a purchased a couple bags from Costco and started them indoors, can’t wait to plant them outside. Greetings from Massachusetts
Great video , Erin! Good straight forward education for us newbies! I've always been intimidated by Dahlias, but watching this video gives me some confidence in growing them. Thanks Erin!
Dahlias are such amazing plants. There are so many different types and colors to choose from, and they make the most gorgeous bouquets. My house faces true South and each year the Dahlias that I have planted next to the South wall of my house over-Winter in the ground and come up in the Spring. I think the radiant heat from the house and its foundation, and the true South exposure make this possible. That was a great video about Dahlias Erin and is sure to inspire viewers to try growing Dahlias, if they haven't already. Be well.
I’m in year 2 of leaving them in the ground around my patio (southeast PA, 7A). They have all come back and look promising, The shortest variety already has a couple of buds!
I just planted my last several dahlias tonight and found one that had overwintered and the sprouts were about 3 inches tall. I was shocked. I'm in Zone 5b SE Wisconsin. There was no mulch covering the clay soil where it was planted last year. I'm definitely going to try and overwinter some this fall just for fun.
Great video, Erin! I'm in zone 6a and while I dug some of my dahlias, I left others in the ground and put some extra spent potting soil on them over the winter. I have some coming back for the second time now. I started some new dahlia from Floret's seeds this year. Germination was great , some are in pots, others will be going in the ground this week.
I’m just south of the WI/IL border. I don’t think I’ve commented before but I had to this time. I admit I’m only about a minute into this video, but Erin!!! The intro, the editing… well done! I love the unedited walk and talks too. This is a very nice balance. Just wanted to let you know I loved it. Ok, back to the video!
Great info as always, Erin! You are definitely the go-to Dahlia Queen 😊. I got the most gorgeous purple and white dinner plate dahlias two years ago and they all came up SUNFLOWERS, lol. Love me some sunflowers but I was a little bummed. I’ll try again. Thank you!!
I never thought about it before, but you’re right they are very similar to tomato plants! Mine came and went within a month. Of course I live in zone 10a/b and neither like heat. I can do salad a little longer in pots but for the most part mine are done before yours even get going good! 😢
As another viewer mentioned, this is also my first year growing dahlias and I’ve already learned something! In an effort to save garden space, I potted up several tubers that I thought looked a bit iffy when I received them. Thankfully they all sprouted. However, now they are gigantic in comparison to their buddies beside them. I didn’t even think of it. Now I’m having to make sure everyone stays friendly and doesn’t shade out their neighbor. 😄. Best news? I was able to locate 2 Waltzing Matilda tubers! Yours are so pretty and I was delighted to finally locate some.
Greeting's from Ireland, good video, I don't have them in my garden but my mother loves them and so do the slug's. They go hell for leather on them and I've told her to put down slug trap's but she let's nature take it's course. I'd like to grow them but I have nowhere to store the tuber's over winter and my bed's are full.
Always need to review info on dahlias. Would someone please invent a telescoping stake!! I do not like the look of stakes in the garden, but they sure do need them! Good to know about the low nitrogen #
Enjoyed your video as always. I wanted to let you know, referencing back to a video you did a little while ago. My hardy begonias just started to pop out of the ground a couple days ago. I'm in NE PA. Maybe yours will pop up soon 😉
I planted Dahlias in March 2024 not knowing what to expect. Well, I got Dahlias that grew well. Too well. I had to put posts up to support them. While 6 of them grew tall, three did not. Inam thinking of transpkantin the shorter ones to b thecfront and the others to the back, perhaps during the holidays I need to put up a screen about 18-24" up to support them and strings further up to suppirt the flowers.
Great video. I live pretty close to Northwind Perennial Farms, zone 5b. Some of my dahlias I left in the ground from last year are actually coming back! Not sure if its because of the microclimate near the house,, our mild winter, or both.
Thank you so much, Erin! I kept pausing and running out to my garden to pinch off & then again to deadhead. Now I just have to fertilize. This is my second year trying dahlias. Last year my first one came up & bloomed, but it did not come up this year. Maybe too much rain in Houston rotted it?
Great video as always!! I’ve been growing dahlias for a few years now, but I still struggle with overwintering! This year, I’m going to try a humidifier in Dahlia Storing room. Do you think that would help or do you think it would be too much moisture?
Hey Erin. I garden in 5 zones higher than you. we don't have to lift dahlias persé but it can rot in the ground because they go dormant in our rainy season. Would you suggest we cover the ground with plastic to keep them dry.
Hi Erin, do you have a problem with slugs and earwigs when planting directly in soil ? Is it preferable to reduce the ‘ attack ‘ by planting in large pots? Thanks for an informative and timely video !🥰🌸🇨🇦
I have a question. One of my dahlias came up just beautifully, but my garden nemesis, earwigs, ate all the leaves...twice before I remembered to sprinkle Diamatacious earth around the plant. But now there are green stalks about 6" high with no leaves and they have been that way for about two week. Do you think they will push out more leaves? Should I trim back the stalks slightly? Should I fertilize? Or is there something elseI can do to rescue this plant? I live an area where it is pretty dry from May through October in California Zone 8b/9a and I use a drip system for supplemental water during those months as needed. Thanks
Last year I planted some dahlia seeds. I got eight plants and of those I lost one. I left them to die off in the garden. This year they all came back! And they spread seeds all over so I have over twenty new plants this year! I'm slightly worried they will become invasive. Mine are already blooming.
I planted dahlia seeds this year and intend to treat them like annuals. I am curious if they will develop tubers at the end of the year. I live in 9b and had a tuber in the ground year round until we had a really wet year. It must have rotted out.
The bunnies feasted on my newly planted dahlias, I covered the survivors with cloches just wondering when they get too big for the cloches if the bunnies will leave them alone
Help! My dahlias have started coming up and a few leaves have some tiny white spots on them and are the are curling. I assume they are bugs. Do you have any idea what kind or what I might use on them? Thanks
I bought my first dahlia tubers this year from big box store...maybe a month or so ago. I went to plant them today and they look dried out and are squishyyyy :( Was this my fault, was I to store it in some way before planting it? I just had them sitting around in my kitchen with the rest of my seedling situation area. I don't remember looking at the tubers when I bought it so not sure if I bought them this way or if I did something wrong, thanks!
I’m in zone 8b coastal NC and I have a dahlia that comes back year after year in the ground. In fact, it’s blooming at the moment! My question is when is the best time to dig, divide, and replant a dahlia that doesn’t need storing for the winter?
@@verawallace9055 Thank you so much for the tip!!! I think at this point I’m a bit too late. It’s already 2 ft tall and in bloom. I will make a note and divide it next April or may! Hope yours does well!
I started growing Dahlias about 4 years ago, thanks to you. ❤
I live in Iowa Zone 5a. I didn't have time to dig my Dahlias last year, we had such a mild winter that the ones on the South side right up against the house have come back. I'm so delighted ❤
Nice!
I missed a cluster last year and was happily surprised to see the shoots coming up from the garden, ahead of the ones Id overwintered in the garage.
That dahlia with the frog on top 🤩🤩🤩
Great info Erin 😀
I feel fortunate. My dahlias came back in my Zone 7 garden. I just mulched them heavily over winter.
Short and sweet instructions - not too overwhelming. Thanks Erin.
Dahlias are just b.a.n.a.n.a.s. 🥰💛
Thank you Erin!
Great Video Erin, I'm in the UK and Dahlias are my favourite too. I take mine out and store them and thanks to you, I now divide them and give them to my friends and family.
Keep up the great work x
Thanks for the useful tips and the reminder that I should be getting my tubers into the ground!!
Love, love , love dahlias!
That frog! So cute. Great video. Thanks ❤
Thank you! I am in mid Michigan in zone 5b.
I've always wanted to grow dahlias, but have not tried yet. This has helped me see them a bit differently and better understand their needs..... so when I do try, they'll have a better chance of survival and thriving.

Planted my first dahlias a few weeks ago. So far they look great.
Good info, thank you!
Erin, I planted my first one last year after seeing yours. And I just noticed it is coming back up. 🥳👩🏼🌾👍

A very helpful tips, I'm growing Dahlias

Erin looks like she is pleading with us to grow dahlias in the thumbnail

May , that's what I asked another Gardener on you tube and that was his answer, I did mine last week, and I couldn't believe how firm the tubers were

@@heatherw.2751 You're welcome, am in 7b so I will probably have blooms in late June, am a newbie , but so far so good 😊
I have japanise beetles, bad.If I plant dahlias am i just feeding these pests?
I’ve used a natural pesticide that’s safe for bees and it’s gotten rid of them. It didn’t get rid of the earwigs that keep eating my dahlias though.
I'm in zone 8b in the PNW. It tried to leave the tubers in the ground but it's just too wet here. They all rotted away.
My tubers were in vermiculite,in a cool fruit cellar and didn't survive. They were all wrinkled. How do you store yours.
Oh I'm in zone 8b
I just planted mine last week and it has rained a TON. Worried they will rot 😢.
The thumbnail for this video is horribly bad picture of you, not even a dahlia lol.
Maybe you didn’t watch the video, but she mentions and shows the Dahlia she’s holding in the thumbnail. Dinnerplate size.
