    The best era for movies!
Also, best combination between popularity and quality, and the variety(of great stuff) was also unreal.

I'd argue it lasted until 1982, because we had a few New Hollywood style films in 1981 and 1982, like Raiders of the Lost Ark, Thief, King of Comedy, Blade Runner, E.T., Ghandi, etc. To me the 80s as we know it really started in 1983, and lasted to 1990 or 1991.

In general great video, I just would add some extra facts about the movement:
    - The actors who became the new stars were “ugly” or at least not “normal good-looking”, since people wasn’t feeling related to the handsome people of classic cinema. That actually helped nowadays culture to change our perception on matters of beauty and physical characteristics (for example, Stallone and Streep were considered really ugly in the 70’s, while nowadays we consider them to be super handsome). The only ones who weren’t ugly were people who came from classic cinema but achieved to be important figures in New Hollywood (Paul Newman, Warren Beatty), people who were children of those stars (Jane Fonda), or, if they were really handsome, they weren’t as recognized as the others (Robert Redford, Christopher Reeve).
    - Since the movement was pretty much based on the losing of power from the majors and the producers, it was really normal to see people from different areas starting to direct (like Robert Redford, Clint Eastwood, Barbra Streisand, Warren Beatty or Sylvester Stallone), as well as it was normal to see people from different arts starting to work in filmmaking (like Barbra Streisand, Paddy Chayefsky or Kris Kristofferson). Even it was normal to see critics starting to work as directors, just like in the Nouvelle Vague (Peter Bogdanovich, Francis Ford Coppola, William Friedkin).
    - Different directing techniques started to emerge (like the improvisations from Robert Altman, the solitude on the takes of John G. Avildsen , etc.).
    - The genres were revolutionalized and changed into new things (for example, the romantic movies didn’t need to be any longer those cheesy, extremely stylish movies with happy endings thanks to movies like Love Story or Somewhere in Time. The horror genre changed into a more human, less monstrous side, with a lot of gore with the born of slashers and thanks to movies as Halloween, Maniac or The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. And the fantasy movies were changed into fairytales with lots of action and even futuristic stuff thanks to Star Wars, etc.).
For me, I think this is the best film movement ever. We only need to see how are we still imitating its style in world cinema, as well as how all the nominees to the Oscars in those years were practically always masterpieces that would win in any year the award. People generally talk badly of American filmmaking because “popular bad” but let’s face it, they’re probably the best ones in the world making films (historically talking), and there’s a reason for them getting such an enormous industry

Great essay man. New Wave is the best era in cinema history. If you're interested I have a vid all about Arthur Penn's movies. Underrated director.

Thanks, it really is -- I'm still going through the many films it has to offer (Little Murders being an example). I like your video, it does make me want to check out more from Penn. I hope to see more similar video essays from you, too.

God, this was a great era for cinema. And even though star wars came out in the seventies, that genre of special effects over plot and character development killed this era.

Great video! My one complaint is referring to Saturday Night Fever as a "feel-good film" at 10:06. That movie is an incredibly bleak rumination on escapism. The characters dance to escape their dead-end lives.

I came here to say this. The rape scene in the car and the girl handing Travolta the condoms, pleading with him. It's an incredibly dark film. It's also wonderful.

WTF Saturday Night Fever had a rape scene?! I've never seen it and just assumed it was just John Travolta and friends doing the hustle for two hours

Interesting content. But you speak like you're holding a lecture in 10th grade in front of your class mates and want it to be over as soon as possible. Respect the full stop and give me a moment to process what you just said, mate :)
