I am a huge Metallica fan too, Tuomas was too, the founder/keyboardist/songwriter/composer, decided he wanted to start a band in the United States, at a Metallica concert. Steve Harris of Maiden is a huge fan of Nightwish and has called Tuomas a F***ing Genius. Floor is the greatest singer I have ever heard, any genre or time. Marko always play a Warwick bass, Emppu always a ESP EV-1 guitar, Tuomas always a Korg.

Marko only uses Warwick gear (I think he has some kind of sponsor deal) and Emppu always uses ESP gear. Though, I think Emppu basically has had maybe total of 3 EV-1 guitars so it really doesn't matter if he's sponsored or not.

@@DavideBertolazzi Yeah, I know why the guitars are called ESP EV-1 or ESP EV-3 but my point is that since Nightwish is commercially successful enough and Emppu doesn't destroy his guitars, he could just as well play with custom guitars that he paid full.
Sponsorship is just extra bonus money.

Every song at this Wacken 2013 show was written for one of the first 2 singers. Floor was only with the band about 10 months here, having taken over mid tour.
Storytime was from 2nd singer ,Anette Olzon era. Anette didn't do operatic vocals, that was done with a choir then. Floor can do them, so she took over those parts herself. Ghost Love Score was from 1st singer Tarja Turunen era.
Tuomas(keyboards, primary songwriter and composer) likes themes of stories and childhood innocence. He is a fan of Disney and composer Hans Zimmer.
    Marko plays Warwick basses exclusively.
For the growls , you want Yours Is an Empty Hope (Wembley 2015 show), and to a lesser extent, Ghost River from this show. Or Disdain by her former band ReVamp live at Grasspop 2010.

You're right about the bass, the whole band always play the same gear makers - they've found what they like and stick with it. Tuomas plays Korgs, Marko plays Warwicks, Emppu plays his custom ESP etc. All of them perform without personal ego - they are always in service to the song. For Floor growling, try "Yours is an Empty Hope" from Wembley Arena 2015. I think you'll also really enjoy "Romanticide", "Ghost River" and "Song of Myself" from the Wacken 2013 concert - not growling but metal, with Nightwish's own twist, of course!

    Song of myself.

Or listen to the album version and then the live version.

Hi, thank you for this reaction! This is my favorite band of all time and Floor is my favorite vocalist and one of my biggest, personal heroes.
She really do know what is needed and when its needed in a song. She understands that she, like the other band members, are a vessel for the music and the story that’s being told.
And that is what makes thia band so great.
The part with the high notes in this song was originally a backing track with a choir. But that was because the former singer couldn’t do those kind of vocals. Floor can and it sounds way better.
If you want some screams you should do “yours is an empty hope” from Wembly 2015. That track as a whole is also heavier than this one.
There is also shorter clips of her screaming and growling on YT. Here is one example, its from a geeman tv show called “sing meinen song” wich basically translates to “sing my song. Its a show where different artists get together and do covers of each other song. Each artist has their own episode where the covers are being performed and there is also alot of talking in between where the other artists gets to know the one that is featured.
Heres a short clip with Floor growling, but i do recommend that you watch the live performance from Wembly first.

Wacken 2013. Floor had just been made a full member of the band. The stars were all in alignment, the band were on fire, and Floor stamped her ownership on the entire Nightwish back catalogue. None of the songs were written for her. The entire concert was Tarja and Anette, NOW and for evermore FLOOR.

Late to this party, but never really late when it comes to Nightwish. Always enjoy your enthusiastic and knowledgeable reactions, John. I'm 75 and I have never believed in 'regrets'. However, having said that, I will always regret not being at this Wacken concert. I have played the DVD an embarrassing number of times and the whole experience has been, and is, a journey of its own. I turn an unattractive shade of green when I look at these lucky souls who were there to experience this live. It truly is one of the best concerts recorded. Floor is a schooled soprano as the other two singers that Nightwish have had.
You should listen to their song "The greatest show of all" after this, its amazing!
Fun fact, Floor is married to the drummer in Sabaton. You should listen to their songs Bismarck, The last stan, Christmas truce, No bullets fly and son on.
All their songs have a historic background that you can read about. Read about the history about the storys first. You can google it, and Sabaton even have a history channel where they brakes down the songs.

Right after you mentioned it I jumped right on it!! lol
Marko Hietala (bass) is sponsored by Warwick.
Emppu Vuorinen (guitar) is sponsored by ESP.
Emppu plays the E.V. 1 where E V are his initials mainly because he helped design this one in particular. He also has a white one, but this one, you will see him play ALL the time.
    carry on...
    Ok, back to commenting...
Umm... I could be mistaken but on this particular song, Marko is playing the Warwick Vampyre. He uses 2 but this one the most. He also has a double neck bass/guitar combo. I won't spoil anything for you but you WILL eventually see him playing it.
Jukka Nevelainen (drums) is sponsored by TAMA and he is right handed, however, he does have a fixed-closed hi hat on his right which he uses a lot. His regular pedal hi hat is where it normally would be, on his left. Jukka uses Paiste cymbals.
Sadly, Jukka was forced to retire from the drums due to health issues tied to insomnia. His good friend and WinterSun drummer, Kai Hahto, filled in for the recording of "Endless Forms Most Beautiful" which was singer Floor Jansen's first studio album with Nightwish released in 2015.
Kai was announced permanent in 2019.
Kai is sponsored by Pearl Drums and uses Zildjian cymbals.
Tuomas Holopainen uses KORG keyboards. If all his equipment is KORG, I do not know.
But as a musician myself, I thought you'd enjoy knowing where they stand as far as what they play.
Thank you for the video, reaction and comments. Stay safe and stay blessed.

When Anette Olzon (2nd Nightwish singer) sang this same song, the operatic singing following that killer drum "solo" was performed by choral voices on the background recording. When Floor replaced Anette, they no longer needed other singers for the coloratura portion. Floor simply provided it. Check out the Dutch show "Beste Zangers" from 2019, and give a listen to Floor singing "Vilja Lied". Then listen to her and Tim Ackerman do a cover of "Shallow".

NW probably wouldn't exist if not for Metallica, but that's a longer story. Hetfield himself listened to their concert this year and went backstage to fistbump Floor (there is a short video). Bands have huge respect for each other.

Tuomas is as big a fan of movie music as he is of rock or metal.
And you can tell - that whole W I D E S C R E E N sound, and all those key changes. He also has quite a talent for big, melodic earworm pop choruses, and the ability to shoehorn them into rock/metal in a way that works and isn't cheesy. That isn't an easy thing to do. Part of that, too, is Floor's vocal power - which sells borderline-corny stuff that a weaker singer might not be able to put across. And, of course, her stage persona - she's 25% larger-than-life from the eyes down, and that fits Nightwish's larger-than-life music perfectly.

This is our Valkyrie Goddess for you. And you witnessed first hand a "Dutch Windmill" , and to finish you off, The Operatic "Cruise Missile" !!!!
Awesome tune , although it is kind of a popish sound (originally sung by Anette,The second singer of Nightwish), but Floor gave it soooo much POWER !!! Plus that operatic part was done by children's choir originally, but Floor said : "I GOT THIS"
And Yes, Marko is playing his "Rusty" finished Warwick Buzzard bass! Good eye 👌. I myself have Warwick RB Corvette Multi Scale 5 (I Love this Bass).
Nightwish lyrics are often a bit interpretive, and not as "straight forward" as many other bands, because Tuomas ( The Metal Mozart Tuomas Holopainen: founder, leader, keyboardist, songwriter and the main composer for Nightwish.) prefers people to put their own interpretations and life experiences into the lyrics. you connect with songs on a personal level when there is something there that relates to things you have gone/are going through, and you may even find new connections later on in life when you have gone through other big events/emotions. there might be songs you are quite indifferent about (oh, nice song) and then you go through something big and all of a sudden it makes you break down in tears because now you relate to something in the lyrics you didn't before, and see it from a whole new perspective. imagination and life experiences are powerful, and Tuomas has great appreciation of this.
PS: IF YOU WANT growling, Then Nightwish - Yours is an empty hope at WEMBLEY is a MUST!!!!! Here is a link: ruclips.net/video/vyLsU7Q333k/видео.html this song was in Simpsons to 😉!!!!
    Hail Nightwish !!!!

Drummers using the alt high hat on the opposite side are usually said to be playing “open” instead of crossed over. It’s usually done when on a sloshy high hat and cymbals needed are nearby (like a China or ride) and during double bass sections.

"Where it's necessary in the song..."
My man, you just described the entire essence of Nightwish's musicality. Tuomas, the keyboard player, is the maestro have no doubt. But the way he composes, he wants each of those insanely talented and skilled musicians to put their "stamp" on it. And they understand what he wants so well and that they know it's THE SONG, THE MUSIC that counts, not their individual abilities. So within the maestro's framework, they each contribute exactly what the composition needs, when it is needed.
Yep, a Warwick bass! Another reactor (Tank the Tech) confirmed that regularly. He's a roadie and approaches things from a gear perspective. Hell, you and he ought to do a collab reaction or even just a live stream together and talk music and metal. That should be amazing.

I'm 74, best bands ever....Beatles, Beach Boys, Rolling Stones, Nightwish with Floor and Marco. All other metal bands are just plain metal, a dime a dozen. Nightwish with Floor is GOLD. Wacken 2013 is the best, Storytime from this concert is me and my 3 year old granddaughter's favorite song. All of Floors solo stuff is mind blow also. Beste Zangers, Amsterdam Live 2019, her cover songs and another favorite of mine, While Loved Died. I don't watch too many reaction videos anymore, but I will check you out along the way to see how your Floor journey goes.

For the growls, your go to song is "Yours Is An Empty Hope" - the Live Wembley Arena 2015 version is perhaps the best one. (There are other good performances too, but the problem with them is that the growls can get lost in the music, as they take place during the chorus, where Marco is also singing. The recording of the Wembley version is the best, I think.)

It's a Warwick base, Marko has 3 different Warwick bases I think. two pure bases and The Beast, a double-necked base/guitar that he uses in some songs among others The Islander from the 2015 concert in Tampere that I would suggest you react to if you want to see the range and skill of him as a singer.
P.S. when I heard your final thoughts that's this whole band, they all moderate themselves doing and playing just what's needed for the song. They all know they're good so they don't showboat, they just play tight and spot on every time. D.S.

Welcome to the rabbit hole - a wonderful place to be. Metallica was a major influence on Tuomas, the mastermind behind the music of Nightwish. He saw them live in Kansas City as a teenage exchange student living in Wichita. It changed his life, and we all are benefiting. Marko does play Warwick. Next you can either start out a little bit softer… with Ever Dream, or something a little more metal, with Romanticide, both from this same Wacken show. Enjoy the journey!
