Dream Theater have also a song about the death of the band's drummer's dad. It's called The best of times. It's a longer song, lasting 13 minutes but it's also so emotional that you are going to love it too. Have that in your mind. And yes, Another Day is as beautiful now as it was when it was written, 32 years ago. Chills.

So many songs to cry with within their discography…

That's a great tune. Not only the emotion of the lyrics, but JP's guitar playing all through it is some of his best ever. Take Away My Pain is the coda for Another Day too, about JP's fathers passing.

If you want emotion listen to ''Best of times''. It's the song they wrote for the loss of Mike Portnoy's (the drummer) father. And prepare to cry in the last 3 minutes.

They're not from Boston - most of the band members are from Long Island, N.Y. and the singer is Canadian.
By the way, although they have written several beautiful ballads - The Spirit Carries On, Through Her Eyes, Hollow Years (live version), or my favorite, Beneath the Surface - they are better known for their intricate progressive metal sound and for their technical proficiency and musicality with long, complex instrumentals. They mix it up a LOT, with driving, heavy riff-based tunes or proggy odes, homages to their influences and fantastically crafted real-life as well as fictional stories... A friend of mine once said that they're "the musician's musicians", meaning that they are best appreciated by musically inclined people. But they also turn off a lot of people precisely because of this - their naysayers think they're just "show-offs", have no soul, etc. in spite of the countless moments of sheer emotion in their music. I used to be a mega-Rush fan, but when Dream Theater showed up in the early nineties, they stole my musical heart and mind.

If you want another tear jerker, do Best of Times. The drummer wrote it as a tribute to his father. He even managed to play it for him by his bedside before he passed.

The next challenge for you is to listen to a long song with very good lyrics: "A change of season", "Six degrees of inner turbulence" or "Illumination Theory"

I think you’re ready for some of the more heavier side of Dream Theater. I will recommend Learning to Live (about living with AIDS, from the 90s). Or if you want something more epic, do the Glass Prison about the drummers alcohol addiction.

This is a great song from the album Images and Words. I bought it in 1992 when it came out and almost every album since, but Images and Words is still my favorite. The cassette tape of Images and Words spent pretty much all of 1992 in my car’s cassette deck. “Surrounded” is another excellent song.

Bro!! I went to Hogwild Records here in San Antonio Texas back in 1992 and got me a copy after I heard Pull Me Under and Take The Time on the radio. When I heard Metropolis Part 1 for the first time, my whole world got flipped up side down!!

I was expecting you would get here at some point after all these pink floyd reactions.
Now you are ready for the 'sequel' let's say. The best of times.
Also, the count of Tuscany and Octavarium really worth a listen.
The there are some more heavy and fast songs like Metropolis pt1 and Learning to live.
Generally, they are unbelievable band. I saw them live as well, it was something else.

Yes ! I hope you continue your journey very far into DT ! You only heard the most accessible stuff, and that's a good thing, since some of their music is very technical and hard to appreciate for most non-musicians. But there's so much more beauty to discover, i hope you enjoy the trip !
