Man you just made light in the dark! Thank you, you explained very well! I have a Ioniq 28kw and to plan the trip with such a short range car is a challenge.
Genius! 12:26 adding to Google maps on my phone is exactl what I was looking for. Without this video, I'd be a tad lost w how to use this. Thanks much! You're the man!
We just bought a 2022 Leaf SL plus & the dealership did a terrible job of explaining the charging to us.... I joined a Facebook group and EVERYONE recommended this app, so I really appreciate learning more. It's single digit cold in the midwest & we're traveling from IL to IA - we had NO idea that we'd lose a charge that quickly! (40% decrease driving 44 miles!!) yes we had the heat on , but still! Cold weather driving in an EV would be a great video (it may be out there already, but I haven't had time to look). Again, thanks & this video was very well done!
Happy to help. As a tip, using the "auto" function on the heat will use far more battery. I recommend heating the cabin, while plugged in (if possible), and then keeping the fan/temp as low as comfortable. The higher the temp/fan settings, the higher the usage. Also, highway speeds will use battery at a far greater rate than moderate speeds. If you are stuck for charge along your route, don't be afraid to drive less than the speed limit. People will pass you, and act annoyed, but it is better than them cruising past you on the side of the road.
You pointed out features I had missed in using this app. Thanks for covering this very useful app that works in lots of countries besides North America.
Great video thanks for sharing your knowledge, I learned a few things. Where is plug share drives it chargers locations from ? People report on new chargers? Satellite? Thanks
I designed 4 routes on my macbook and expected them to be identical in my plugshare app on my iphone. They weren't and, in fact, useless. I used your suggestion to email the route to myself which worked but I don't want the route in google maps - I want it in plugshare on my phone. Shouldn't this be possible ?
Unfortunately, tech doesn't always work as expected - especially when going from laptop to mobile device. But yes, I agree it should be possible - it just isn't always the case
Great review of the app. it is very helpful and I use it with my Nissan Leaf 2021 S Plus all the time. I have also used a better route planner, but plug share is better with what charging stations there are and comments on if it's working and cost. I use it far more then anything else. Again thanks you show me a few settings that have even made it better.
With the trip planner on plugShare is it possible to change from one road to another one, ex... I'm in Quebec, from Montreal to Trois-Riviere, I want to take the A40 Highway, then after a lunch in a restorant, I want to continu to Levis,Qc by the 138 that's a provincial route instead take the A20 Highway that PlugShare ask me to take...
Thanks! Liked & subd. I've learned a thing or two, proud owner of a 2020 leaf SL plus and I have the app on my ph but couldn't figure out the trip planner now I know why, will dwnld. the desk top version I have yet to do a road trip but hopefully soon to test it's capabilities.
Derek. Wow, what a great video. I just got a 2023 Chevy Bolt EUV and LOVING it around town! But we do need to visit our daughter wh is 208 miles away, and rated at 247, so it's chancy. I've installed PlugShare on both my phone and computer and had seen an old video with the concept being you'd be able to use PlugShare to pay for a charge in a whole variety of chargers. That was an 9 year old video and obviously did not pan out. My question is exactly what are you doing to pay for charging through your phone? Yes PlugShare is an amazing app showing me where stations are along its Trip Planner tool, but in order to pay through my phone, I'm thinking I'm going to have to install and setup (credit card info, etc) Blink, Tesla, EvGo, .....you get the idea. Is this what you're doing and are you OK with a bunch of apps having your info? My second question is specific to the Hickory Run Service Plaza in PA with like 10 Tesla Superchargers. My car definitely has an adapter to plug into Tesla stations. But does that require the station have something called Magic Dock? I know Tesla began opening up charging stations to non-tesla cars at the end of February, but that doesn't help me know for certain if the Hickory Run Service Plaza chargers are there yet. This is the halfway point of my trip and crucial to us getting to our destination without running out of juice. That stop is right along the Pennsylvania Turnpike and even has food! IT SURE WOULD BE PERFECT!!!! Any suggestions on how I could find out ahead of time.
I understand planning the trip on a computer/laptop and sending it to your phone, how does it work after you've gotten to your destination and you've spent a day or two there and you didn't bring your computer/laptop, how do you plan the trip back?
You have to be at a station that allows payment via Plugshare. When I filtered specifically to look for that, I only see ones in California at the moment
Adding to Google maps forces a "gmail" eddress which is not on my phone. My PS profile shows the correct eddress but I cannot find how to change it for the "send to phone" function. Also, how do you edit of delete a comment posted in the "Check In" function?
Thanks for watching. Not sure what you mean by "forces a Gmail address"... You do not need a gmail address to use google maps. You may need a google account, but you can set one up with any email address. As for editing a checking comment, not entirely sure if you can to be honest. If you can, my thought would be to go to the station and look at your check-ins on that particular station.
Is t true you can can find regular 120 volt wall plugs ( like found in your house) to charge solar batteries when cloudy weather for days leaves your rig without power...
Really annoying background noise. Music to some, perhaps - but necessary to no one. Probably good content, but I only made it about 3 minutes into the video.
While you are correct, I don't see anything wrong with using pop-culture phrasing to illustrate the differences chargers. Common phrasing is Level 1, 2 or 3 - at least where I am.
@@derekthornton Repeat the first Four words you sent me. I am correct and you should be using the correct terms so OTHERS that don't know any better learn the correct term 😉.
My point is what value does it add to the message? Level 3 is faster than Level 1. That was the entire point. Knowing whether or not it is DC or AC, to the average person, does not matter. All they care about it the charging times.
@@derekthornton Hi, you must be religious. Thick headed. Why is the truth and facts so hard for you! JUST say, level 1 and 2, then you have DC fast charging. DC FAST CHARGING also has a level 1 and 2. No public Vehicles can use level 2 DC fast charging as it's over 350+ kw.
Man you just made light in the dark! Thank you, you explained very well! I have a Ioniq 28kw and to plan the trip with such a short range car is a challenge.
Maybe my favorite comment yet, thank you. Glad it helped

Great tutorial. After manually plotting our road trips for our 43 kwh Leaf (150 mile range), the trip planner makes the navigation easier. Thank you.

Great job, Derek. Very helpful - taking our first 600 mile trip this week.
Sweet, enjoy the ride :)

Happy to help, thanks for watching. How long is the road trip?

Yes, you can report new chargers on Plugshare yourself

How do you pay for charging with plugshare
I've never paid with the Plugshare app to be honest. The local chargers I use are Chargepoint or don't require an app.

Plan it ahead of time? ;)
Thx so much! I'm trying to find the PlugShare app on my MacBook Pro and the App store says "No results" What am I missing?
You're welcome, thanks for watching. The Plugshare App is a mobile app, while the website should be universal.
Hello, nice video! I had one question, how can you pay via the Plugshare App?
You have to be at a station that allows payment via Plugshare. When I filtered specifically to look for that, I only see ones in California at the moment
what about plug and pay on the app ?
Never used it personally, sorry. I use individual company apps if needed

Great helpful vid. Can you tell me how to delete a car that I accidentally added? Thanks
If you go into your profile, then hit 'change vehicle' and there should be a "minus" sign next to all vehicles in your profile. Thanks for watching.
Just figured it out. You can’t delete in app but you can on the web version.
Thanks funny your reply wasn’t there when I responded. Lol
You can delete in the app on Android for sure. Not sure about iOS
Very helpful - THANKS!

If your battery and charger is portable, don't see why not. I've used Plugshare to find wall plugs before.
@@derekthornton yes most are portable. They're used for camping, van life, RVing, power outages etc... technology for them has come a long way...
Yup, go for it. Good idea for usage of the app
@@derekthornton I assume someone with these standard plugs posted its for public use ey? dont want to get yelled at for using em lol
Some will not be useable and some will have certain restrictions (ie. For patrons of a business), but knowing where they are is half the battle

Hahaha, guess it isn't your favorite ;)

Wrong information. It's DC Fast Charging, NOT level 3.
