FOGGY CONTACTS what baffles me is that a good name brand as ekwb would have gave me this noise issue. but at the same time that’s why I try to get different pumps from different brands to get this type of problems before I release something and adapt
@@radikult-custom I see that issue before. A lot in fact. They let the pump run dry and burned the ceramic ball off causing the impeller to contact the body. I also see balanced weight fall off causing the impeller wobble that burned the ceramic also. But that is much lower number compare to the first case.
yes the metal is throwing the pump out of balance, you may not see it vibrate but it is indeed vibrating, your option to open the area a little simply opened the tolerances between the rezzie and pump so that now it isn't hitting. I recommend you measure the inner area of the pump top that came with the ek pump. on a side note, friends don't let friends buy EK products. ek has been around so long they are slacking off on quality big time and I personally will NEVER use another ek product myself

Here is some suggestions for the future Watercool.de (aka heatkiller) , alphacool, aquacomputer, and hardware labs and some magicool products. Most of the brands that have confidence in their products are fairly transparent. For example hardware labs gives info about pressure testing as well as at fairly high deltas how much energy dissipation you could expect to get from their rads. Believe it or not that info is actually fairly useful though again they rate it at a very high delta. I can't fault them for it but atleast they do it. Watercool.de (heatkiller) gives pressure testing specs and has confidence in their blocks. They are some of the better machined blocks and for reasonable prices only gripe in on some portions of the block the surface finish could be improved but they are very good blocks. Alphacool has some good stuff and some meh level stuff but they do give proper information about how they test their products. Magicool is actually a OEM for a few companies actually one of them I mentioned has used them in the past. But magicool does make fairly good radiators for certain uses. They also pressure test to some of the highest pressures in the industry on SOME not all of their radiators they have a few different series and they are not all pressure tested to the same degree. However I would ague they are one of the more transparent companies. Barrow also with some things is a good alternative as well. Assuming the price is right EK refuses to give really any information on their products and they will happily void your warranty. For example they make blocks with some questionable acrylic and they don't provide torque specs to prevent damage. Then they will void your warranty for improper torque being applied via fastener that they don't provide a spec on. In some places this would be illegal but you would have to argue this in court. One of the best examples of this on their blocks is the supremacy MX blocks there is a version with a waffle like top that's not even solid acrylic. It has cracked on tons and tons of people from not even cranking down to hard on the fittings actually if your tubing is a bit stiff just trying to get the loop plumbed up will be enough to crack it. EK also has a history of making crappy blocks on occasion in the past few years then totally revamping the product cause the performance was shit then telling the people who bought the original version we won't help you other then we will give you a few Percent off the purchase of the vastly improved actually useable version. This has happened a few times over the years now or stuff similar with them. All in all the companies that are trustworthy tend to backup their products with data and post it in plain sight on their website. The companies that tend to be untrustworthy don't talk about pressure testing , or any other specifications. I don't have to name all the names of brands that have those issues. You can just see it for yourself when you look at their product pages and look into those products. I will give EK credit on 2 products. Their pressure tester kit is one of the better ones on the market though the hand pump it comes with leaves a lot to be desired and the price at 40 is a bit steep for what you get if the kit was 30 I'd have 0 complaints. Also their rubber ZMT tubing is actually good from the standpoint of watercooling specific tubing products however it's more flexible but not quite up to par in other ways with automotive trans oil cooler lines and double wall fuel line. Are often made of the same material. Good for different uses. I prefer using the double wall fuel line and trans oil cooler line (with corded sleeve between the 2 walls) for water chillers esp. as these tubes are quite well insulated with 2 seperated layers of rubber. That being said they still get frost/condensate on them eventually

Those metal pins are for balancing the impeller. i have 2 pumps. A Laing D4 (old one 2007 or older) and a AlphaCool branded one, and both have have a couple of pins of varying height (thus weight).
My XSPC D5 Vario has those weights inside the impeller for balancing, but my Xylem D5 PWM pump doesn't have any balancing inside, I am assuming they do that only if its needed for that specific impeller and that specific pump and they may not have gotten it 100% perfect on that one. Hello, I have a vpp655 vario since 2006 working. I had a problem with the rotor. It seems that the area where the ceramic sphere rests broke due to fatigue, I suppose. I bought a new rotor on Aliexpress and the exact same thing happened to me that happened to your client. The rotor collided with the block (alphacool HF d5). The decision I made was simple. Replace the O-ring with one that further separates the pump from the block. I think it would be a simpler solution for your reservoirs. All the best
Hi 👋, probably the impeller is a bit out of balance and that’s why it’s making some noise inside the reservoir. Unfortunately there is no easy way to balance an impeller, but putting a thicker oring to separate the pump a bit is a good idea. 👍 I have already change and updated the pump inlets on the reservoir to prevent any of the issues with impellers hitting the reservoirs. Great job you do, I always wanted to make my own blocks, but I never had the money to buy a decent CNC. All the best
the balancing is used for more viscous fluids being pumped, otherwise its a problem with material as thin as water cause it will form its own self correcting bearing, EK has a habit of more money = better not what is the best solution for the problem we are solving
I recently bought a EK FLT with D5 and it makes a grinding noise at startup or any speed under 50% I think the impeller balance is off or maybe the res housing is off. I’m ordering a Aqua Computer D5 to replace pump hope it fits the EK res mount bracket with the smart panel on top of the pump.
It’s really hard to tell which part is “faulty” maybe the pump housing is a hair off and that’s why it makes that sound. Or the impeller is a bit out of balance. As you can see in this video I try multiple brands and I could only get the noise from the EKWB pump and by close inspection I notice the pins inside the impeller had like “extra” material at the top while all other impeller didn’t.

Nacho Vidal the side panel on a 011 dynamic case? I measured and it don’t fit with the panel. You will need to put some spaces to separate the reservoir to make space for the D5 next pump

nick petrossi you can use any brands D5 or 655 pumps. Personally I have a swiftech 655 pump last me for 4 years and still working. But you can get any brand you want

That is good information to know Mario. Those metal slugs in the center of the impeller are balance weights like you have on your wheels on your car. I have a D5 EK pump running in one of your reservoirs. It's running just fine. I might have dodged the clearance issue by fully hand polishing my res. The only problem I had was using the original O-ring that came with my EK X-res pump combo. Once I changed to a thicker O-ring I had no more leaks. The only other thing I could suggest is perhaps putting a slight bevel on the edge of the inlet hole of the pump to lessen the chance of cavitation as the water enters the pump. I had the same thing happen to me with an XSPC Photon D5 res. I had an XSPC pump in it and it was fine but when I switched to a Xylem branded pump so i could control the speed with the pwm output and filled the loop it leaked. To fix it i had to switch o-rings on the two pumps in order to get the spacing right. The thinner o-ring was letting the pump bottom out on the res and not make a good seal which caused it to leak.
Francis Phillipeck it’s been a while now. But I been supplying a thicker o-ring for the D5 pumps, just to prevent any leaks just what you just described. I figured that those pins were for balancing but what baffle me was that a good name brand was giving those noise issues. I might have expected it from a cheap copy of a D5

@@rknine7998 you should contact thermaltake or where you bought it. Maybe the bracket the hold the pump is too tight. Try making it a little loose but not to loose that it can leak.

mrcryptz yes that’s the same issue this ekwb pump had. At low speed is good but at full speed it hits. After doing some testing and changes I have decided to implement those changes to the rest of my reservoirs. A video coming soon to announce it
I have the same problem. Xspc pump does the same thing in his reservoir. Fortunately I had an extra D5 from alphacool that ended up working. It completely bummed me out though because the xspc was brand-spankin'-new.
My d5 ekwb pump that came with the d5 reflections front distro for the 011-dynamic is randomly making a slapping noise like tolerance issue also. Also a high pitch dog whistle sound that is barely audible but your ears hurt from it. What is a better pump? I want to replace this even. Tho it's brand new. Ekwb is trash and they need to stop being worshiped for a god

There is a way to fix the speed at 100% without a motherboard? Like... Short the wires??? Just to run at max speed without have to connect the small conector?

Failed to explain anything about the pumps and their differences. It was just a video about a problem you encountered with a pump. That is fine for what it is. But the title is completely deceiving and it was a waste of my time.

That looks like a QC issue. Those look like spacer slugs that should have been removed when the plastic part was made.

i am having the same problem with the xspc vario pump. if i run it at 3 its whisper quiet, if i run it at 4 or 5 its hitting.

I have the same problem. Xspc pump does the same thing in his reservoir. Fortunately I had an extra D5 from alphacool that ended up working. It completely bummed me out though because the xspc was brand-spankin'-new.
Do your reservoirs support the newer 755 pump?
Christian Meldal personally have not tested that pump, but a while ago a customer tested the 755 pump and he told me it worked just as a D5.
My d5 ekwb pump that came with the d5 reflections front distro for the 011-dynamic is randomly making a slapping noise like tolerance issue also. Also a high pitch dog whistle sound that is barely audible but your ears hurt from it. What is a better pump? I want to replace this even. Tho it's brand new. Ekwb is trash and they need to stop being worshiped for a god

There is a way to fix the speed at 100% without a motherboard? Like... Short the wires??? Just to run at max speed without have to connect the small conector?
w1p30ut3r the PWM pump I have, if I don’t connect the small plug (green, blue) to the motherboard, then the pump runs at 100%
If it’s connected then runs at the speed I set on bios

w1p30ut3r CPU plug always need to have something connected either a pwm fan or pump.
But any would work for the pump

Damir Perković Yes, I know Laing is the makers of D5 pumps and than other companies just re-name them with they own stickers and labels
There is a few variations though and if they order enough units they can get small changes made.

Failed to explain anything about the pumps and their differences. It was just a video about a problem you encountered with a pump. That is fine for what it is. But the title is completely deceiving and it was a waste of my time.
Disliked for misleading title, this video isn't about a decision between D5 *OR* 655 at all, which is because usually any 655 pumps just *ARE* D5 pumps. Which is why this title made me curious. And then you were talking about a reservoir all the time. Dude!
That's what I thought when I put it together and indeed when I raise the revolutions to more than 3/5 the rotor vibrates. I'm going to buy a new block and pump. I don't know whether to apex or go to what I know works and take a VPP655 again that has been working for many years, but this time I will take the PWM version. I think it is not worth buying an Apex because it no longer has the ceramic dial as I have read. Great job you do, I always wanted to make my own blocks, but I never had the money to buy a decent CNC. All the best 😊
