Instant Pot Soft and Hard Boiled Eggs

- How do you like your boiled eggs cooked? Today I'm showing what eggs look like cooked at 4 different times, along with my favorite way to make hard boiled eggs, in the Instant Pot.
If you want to make your eggs more soft boiled, do not do a 5 minute natural release at the end of the cook time. Once the timer beeps, go ahead and turn the knob to release the pressure and continue with the 5 minute ice bath.

For soft boiled eggs (white done and yolk runny), I set the IP for 2-3 minutes cook time. Once the timer goes off I do a Quick (manual) release immediately followed by an ice bath.
If you let them sit for the 5 minutes before releasing pressure they are continuing in the cooking process! Your timed eggs look so much more done than mine.
The only time I allow my eggs to sit for 5 minutes in the manual release mode is when I'm going the hard boiled 5-5-5 method.
I agree, I would be interested to see the eggs with a quick release. I also love soft boiled egges. I will try it myself.
We too love soft boiled eggs and I do the quick release after the 3 mins of cooking. I don’t put in an ice bath though as we like to dip toast fingers in the hot egg yolk.
Hubby likes a soft boiled egg cut in half on top of his avocado toast, Paula, so I do a quick dunk in the ice bath to start breaking away the shell. Like you, I love to do as my Gram did when I was a little girl......place the egg in an egg cup, break off the top shell and dive in with the toast points!! 😀❤
Thank you! I’m still pretty new to the instant pot, and after watching this I was very concerned about whether it was even possible to make a soft boiled egg in it!
What intensive research for boiled eggs! I’m a 5 minute girl.Deviled eggs are so good, and we eat them year round. 😊💙
Thanks to you, I now use my instant pot for the 5:5:5 method after many failed attempts the old fashioned way! Being on Keto, it’s been saving me so much time and frustration when it comes to prepping eggs! Thank you!!!
Just as an FYI, I wouldn't call any of the eggs you did "soft boiled". Just various degrees of medium. For soft boiled, the yolk is runny. It kinda works like a gravy for your toast or muffin. Yummmm. One of the other comments mentioned something like 3-0-5. Quick release only. That came out very nice.
I’m excited to see how these turn out! FYI I have an 8qt and I use 1 cup of water and it works fine.
Jen Chapin - me too!
I don't know if my instapot is a 6qt or 8qt... is there away to find out?
Thanks for sharing. I love the 3:3:5! Real soft yolk is sooooo yum to me. Now I wanna try doing the 3 mins with a quick release and see if I can get it runnier.
I do mine as "devil" eggs with a 6-6-6 method 😆
😂that’s awesome!! 🤣
3 or 5. I use them for deviled eggs, egg salad or on a salad. My husband wants them stored in the fridge so that he can grab a couple for a snack.
Thank you. Everyone else I have seen "THINKS" that you should change the time if you add more eggs. They don't know. They assume. And they pass that on as fact, even if they do at some point say they only 'think' it needs that.
Hey kiddo! Isn’t it great that your egg video is still going strong after 2 years and helping newbies? I really appreciate your efforts in doing the testing. I do the 5:5:5 method but yesterday my eggs came out with the Grey tinge… maybe a smaller egg? Or room temperature vrs. Cold from the fridge? I did them room temperature but I think tomorrow I’m going to try cold eggs…but again, TYSM!!🥰
I do the 5:5:5 also but I'm going to try doing soft boiled now that you figured it out for me! Thanks Vanessa 😊💖🍋
I like my yolk cooked all the way, and no matter how many times I've tried the 5-5-5 method, it doesn't work for me, too runny. I do 7 kins, then quick release and straight into an ice bath. Perfect everytime
555 is perfect! My mother in law loved when we made her eggs for Thanksgiving with her with our instant pot. So easy to peel and perfect
I love the 5-5-5 method! Before I would always overcook them. I used the instant pot and did cook time of 8 minutes and they were over cooked with a brown tinge to them. I looked up your video to do the eggs in the instant pot and they have been perfect every time. Tyfs 😊❤️👍🏼
Thanks, I was wondering about a cook time using a quick release, I see you tried it already!
I use a 2 min cook with a 10 min NR and have left them in the ice bath as long as an hour while I’m running around getting things done around the house 🤫. 10 minutes in the ice bath is sufficient though. Eggs come out perfectly cooked and super easy peel every time!
Have you seen the hack for cooking eggs intended for egg salad by cracking them all into a bowl and the bowl goes in the IP?? I’m intrigued, but haven’t tried it yet. It sure would be nice to avoid peeling boiled eggs. =)
You can find the method by googling IP boiled egg loaf.
Getting the evo plus on Tuesday. Doing the eggs for 3 minutes. Can't wait
I love hard boiled eggs! I was using the 5-5-5 method until I started doing 3+ dozen eggs at once so now I do 3-5-5. When doing a larger batch the release time is longer than a min so it over cooks the eggs.
Meg so do you suggest quick release? I’d like to do 3 dozen too.
Must have spent all day.
Great job.
This is all new to me so I tried but was confused on how to set the time but thanks to you I think I got it! Thanks 🙏🏻. I think for deviled eggs I will do the 3 minutes. Thanks 😊
Also thank you for the tip in the description about not doing the 5 minute natural release if you like them more soft boiled.
I haven't done eggs in my instant pot because I was nervous on cooking eggs in their . But now ikn to cook them for 5 minutes.
It would be interesting to see what results you get with lower pressure; if it was truly possible to get a soft-boiled egg.
I love eggs every way. Great video.
Four is tricking us acting like it's a two. So strange. Very thorough video. Thanks.
1 if I wanted soft boiled and 3 or 5 for regular use
5 , 5 , 5 is my favorite!!
I cook mine for 6 mins and ice bath for 10 mins and perfect for me :)
I do the 5-5-5 method, it works better for me, I think the difference may come in the size of the eggs and the cook time. My sister called me the other day and asked how to cook hard boiled eggs in the instant pot, so I told her the 5-5-5 method with a natural release, she said the booklet that came with her pot told her 10 minutes at high pressure then quick release and an ice bath. I recommended she go with my recommended method which she did, then she called and told me that her eggs were over cooked, which I don't understand, so who really knows, I would guess there are different factors that come in to play and that if she did 10 minutes on high they would be super over-cooked, but I guess she'll have to learn by trial and error.
Love your videos and really enjoyed this test but I was thinking when you showed 4 was less cooked then 3 but you could weigh the eggs to get the same results just make sure they are the same size or really close in weight. Thanks for sharing and taking the time to do this for us to see, Hope you and your family have a blessed day
Yes, I think that the yolk in the 4-minute egg was larger than the yolk is the 3 minute egg. That's why the 3-minute seemed to be cooked more.
I only cook my eggs for 5 mins and then QR, then cool in iced water...They are perfect, just like Hubby likes them!
Definitely the 5/5/5 time. I want to be sure they are done. I have hard time eating eggs. I love them, but I get really sick to my stomach if I eat to much. And I can not eat a fried egg. Only scrambled and hard boiled to where they are completely cooked. I think I may be allergic to them because I also get a scratchy throat and just feel miserable after eating them. But sometimes you just have to feed the craving... Lol.
I like my hard boiled eggs at 5. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you!! 😊🌼 I think I would try the 3 minute soft boiled egg; they ALL look yummy 😋 to me, though.
Hello Vanessa, could you try baked potatoes? I just bought an Instant Pot and am learning so much from ur channel as well as others. Thank you so much for sharing!
will definitely try them on 2 minutes soon 👏🏼👌🏼thanx for this useful video!
I always do 5 5 5 method, works every time.
I like mine at 5. Great video as always. Thanks for sharing with us!
Thank you for experimenting! I'm going to try the 3 3 5 👍
I started with trying 5-5-5 and they looked like the ones in your video for 4 minutes. Tried 6-6-6 thinking it would turn out perfect..still the same. I’m going to try 7-7-7 now... 🤞
Was there any difference when you did a couple more at 3 minutes?
I just tried the 5-5-5 method and the eggs were perfect (for egg salad sandwiches or deviled eggs). I have never had the boiled eggs peel as well as this IP method. I will never boil eggs again!!
This was really fun!! I’m still afraid of my instant pot, 🙄 but eggs would probably be a safe way to start!!❤️🐾
Dont be afraid. Follow a recipe from the manual, then do what it says. Always make sure it's on sealing during cooking...after the cook time...it counts down pressure time. Simply way to see the little silver thing drop completely then your good. Good luck.
I'll definitely be using the 5+5+5 method. Thanks for the help. 🤗
You are very welcome!
Where did you get the cubes for ice? Never seen them before
Great experiment! I am going to try this! Thanks!
I like the three minute
I'm curious now how many minutes you need to set to cook with a quick release instead of natural release, would 7 or 8 minutes work? It doesn't really matter, it's just curiosity
I just saw Angela's comment below about 8 min...... guess that doesn't work. Thanks for the great video!
I used my 3Qt pan to cook two eggs (for the first time). I put it on 4 minutes. I used 1 cup of water. And the yolk was half done. I don't like my boiled eggs half cooked.
5 looks great🥚🥚🥚🥚🥚🥚🥚🥚🥚🥚🥚
The reason your four minute egg is softer than your three minute is that the pot was already hot so it came to pressure more quickly. I have had things come out underdone before for this reason.
I believe she said she rinsed out the pot before each use. So I think the pot is the same temp for each cook.
@@cherylp5479 I have done many similar things before. The unit itself is very hot, so unless you wait for it to cool down, you are starting with a higher temp.
5 5 5 for me 🥚🥚🥚
I prefer 3-5-5. 🥚
5-5-5 for sure!
I think I will try the 3 minutes and add a minute to the release.
I do 5 5 5. Can you stack your eggs or do they need to not touch?
I have seen others that filled it completely with eggs.
They can totally touch! I've filled it up before with no problem.
Yay!! Thank you!
May I ask how you got a decorated instant pot ? I've only seen pioneer woman's.
Very helpful thanks so much? I subscribed
I do 3 min and 10 min natural release. I would like them hard or soft or dippy.
Thanks for the thorough video. You don't really mention the temp of the eggs before cooking. Are they straight from the 'fridge or do you have them sit out on the counter for a while first? Thanks!
Straight from fridge
I enjoyed the video.
I like mine 5 minutes hard boiled
I did like the 5 min also, I prefer them to be cooked done when it comes to hard boiled eggs. I also enjoyed this type of video of you trying different things. I do not have a instant pot put it looks like it cooks things well and easy to do.
I use the 5
Thank you for doing this! I do mine for 6.6.6. How does your mom like her pressure cooker?
I don't think she has tried it yet, lol.
Shouldn’t the size of the egg determine how long you need to cook it? In The Ultimate I.P. Book byCoco Morante she does it differently and gives different times for different sized eggs. You then just tap the fat end ofthe egg, roll the egg to crack break off a small piece of shell in rounded end, put under fauct for a second so water gets inside between the membrainand egg, then peel off the shell in 1 piece in1 second. The egg just slips right out.
The book by the way is the best i have seen .
5,5,5 👍🏼
Is there a way to know how much water to add to the instan pot? I always add too much water and my food comes out watery thanks
The 6 quart needs 1 cup of liquid to get to pressure :)
5 5 5 for me !
I was hoping to see how to make soft boild eggs, cooked whites and runny yolk. you made varied hard boiled eggs. I will try myself the 1 2 3 minutes, but not do the 5 minute wait.
I do the 5-5-5 method for hard boiled eggs. I just thought you were going to show us how to do soft boiled which I love! I watch you channel all the time, love your family! Hugs!
When you take the steam function then the egg wil be soft on one minut
I do 5 minutes

Do those reusable ice cube things really work?
Absolutely :)
This was a fun video. I think next time I do eggs in my electric pressure cooker I am going to try your 555 method. I think for a soft runny center maybe do 1 or 2 minutes with a quick release. Fun video thanks again!
The soft boiled was too well done gorgeous me. I may try 0 time on pressure. Soft boiled should be runny.
3 min
Always 555 love um that way :)
555 works for me
6 minute soft boiled 😉
Total?
@@Lmartin253 total time is 6 mins in boiling water. I dont have instapot.
Try five minutes, quick release, ice bath, peel, recipe to MY PERFECT soft boiled eggs!!!! ENJOY
5 for me. I bet the 3 was a smaller egg or older or something.
I like my eggs 5
3mins
5/5/5
Great experiment! This confirms my 5 5 5 choice. You should check out This Pilgrim Life. Lisa has an Instant Pot cookbook coming out this month. She is an Instant Pot guru in my opinion. She's down-to-earth and a Homeschool mom of 5. She does vlogs, has a great blog with lots of free information and she does FB live cooking videos. She does IG as well.
I'm new to both of your channels and enjoy both of them very much. Your content is exceptional!
decently 5 mins for me
None are soft cooked.
The eggs are too hard, That should be soft and runny on the 1 minute egg
Just use an ordinary pan on stove , to much faffing about with ip
You should try 0 (zero) minutes
