Our Ricky can sail very close to the edge, but there's no denying his truth is many peoples on the sly! He's erudite, an animal lover/campaigner, and he's disrespectful enough to make folk sit up and take notice... And once they've got over the initial sleight to their delicate sensibilities, they usually end up agreeing! Making people think is his thing. And he does it well.
Thanks for this, Rob!
He's not a hypocrite when it comes to his animal activism either and has been vegan for several years now.
I have a real issue with this 'his' truth 'your' truth 'my' truth misnomer.... truth is just the actual objective truth...in other words truth is not subjective... beliefs are....stop misusing the word please
Dear Cliff - in order to counteract the death threats, here’s a love threat - you’ve been warned!! ❤️❤️❤️
😂😂😂
Great comment 👍
“Someone jumps in front of the bullet and says why are you shooting at me?” That’s a bar.
This guy is a beast (in the positive sense)! He is smart and hilarious. Love him
Intelligent and able to use it in a positive way! That's what I love about him! He makes you think and laugh....similar to George Carlin. ....but different as well! Ty Cliff this was great! 😁❤
Your hat offends me, but my hat offends my wife, and my wife loves your hat. She is from Chicago (SOX Fan). I grew up in Atlanta.....people can really be that petty and offended. Sad state of affairs in today's times.
Ah…I thought it said sex!🤣
@@analisasmith7927🤣
@@donnaewe3692 yeah I thought it was a bit strange!!
Lmfao if you think people are more offended today than in the past. Motherfuckers used to burn people in the town square for offending them. 😂 i mean jfc people of today are far less triggered than ever before.
I'm English but personally I like red Sox hats cos they're logos cool looks like sex cossa how da ox goes an generally look better than yankees caps. Dunno crap all bout the teams like or the other teams hats. If your American an think your whateva tha fxck team has better caps I'll happily rep it round town on me head if I agree. Your right though people do get offended by mad things.....I know I shouldn't tell you guys this but sometimes fat people offend me, it's not their body or anything about them personally it's the fact half the world's fighting obesity while the other halfs starving it fxcks my head up and yet its not like we're any happier on the side that can eat. Nor are overweight people at blame really. It's the world's fault for being shoddily built for reasons I'm not even sure of.
My brother is 3 yrs older than me when he was born my dad gave in to both sides of the family and had him Christened to keep the peace. But when i was born they tried to do the same thing with me but my dad put his foot down and told them 'no i will not'. He said when my daughter is old enough she can decide for herself what she wants to believe or not to believe in it would be her choice. I think my dad was very brave to do that and forward thinking, i was born in 1971. I am not religious but i am not an athiest, i just do not have a religion. I am a carer and i have looked after many people from different cultures and fairhs. I listen when they talk to me about their religion. They are not forcing it on me i find it facinating. There is so many different faiths in the world and people should not be judged on their faith and what they want to believe in. I believe in ghosts i have seen and felt things but others will not and that is fine. When i die, whenever that will be, i will find out for myself.
Brilliant comment ❤❤
Ricky Gervais, Tim Minchin, Hitchens, George Carlin, Dan Dennett, to lesser degrees Sam Harris and Richard Dawkins - all played a part in my deconversion. I’m an agnostic atheist, but have no qualms with the faithful as long as their faith doesn’t intrude on the freedoms and happiness of others.
Well it's pretty rare for a faith not to intrude on the freedoms and happiness of others.
Like when religions are tax exempt, or a mother's belief causes her child to ignore reasonable information for longer than it could, or just cultural norms like you have to spend absurd money on flowers to decorate a casket because "that's just what you do" instead of just chucking people in the recycling.
I suppose it depends what you consider intruding on the freedoms and happiness of others.
@@ramudon2428I agree with you wholeheartedly. It just feels hypocritical of me to proselytize when that’s among my criticisms of the faithful. But I do advocate for pushing back on its symptoms.
I personally agree with Hitchens and Stephen Fry that religion is not a force for good in the world. But on a personal level, I have a hard time working to take someone’s source of comfort from them.
It probably makes me a hypocrite, or at least means I don’t practice what I preach. I would have to admit to that.
@@NickBollingerMusic I totally get why you'd harp on about your religion and aggressively recruit if you genuinely think everyone who doesn't believe in what you believe in is going to actual hell.
I mean, if you don't you certainly aren't being a very good person. So I don't blame the headhunting activities, myself. In fact, I strangely respect it more than the wishy washy cherry picking variants that just ignores all the troubling stuff and "kinda sorta believes" half heartedly.
That sort of socially adaptive tendency to just discard the horrific parts of religions is what keeps the pulse beating, I suspect.
@@ramudon2428 interesting take! And I see your rationale here too as far as preaching being strangely respectful. That too, to me, goes back to that hypocrisy of the religion itself - Jesus advises people to practice their faith in private. But it’s possible he was more advising against praying in a “showing off” kind of way, rather than what you’re saying, which is to “save” people.
The cherry picking is infuriating. Particularly when the assertion is made that atheists can’t ground their morals in something but the religious can. Except… only grounded in the good parts, not the text’s advocacy for slavery, genocide, misogyny… you know the list.
Good chat friend thanks for engaging.
People bugging me because they have to convert me for my own good have to understand I believe I have the right to tell the m to FK Off . My life my choice. It’s even in the Christian book your god only wants those who comes of their free will. People who are zealots are the same ones who crucified the carpenter
i love Ricky. hes not only hilarious, but hes also extremely smart, and knows what he is talking about
5:52 One of the best arguments as to how political correctness has nothing to do with morality
.👏👏👏👏👏
25:00 Dude.... a market chain in the U.S. had to remove bags of peanuts from their shelves because they did not have a warning label reading : "Warning, may contain nuts" Juuuust saying. "Imagine how stupid the average person is, then think that half of them are even stupider than that" - George Carlin.
Wild that you get death threats bro. One of the kindest people on youtube, People be crazy out here fam fk em🤬😂
Great channel! You have a heart of gold and I look forward to each episode. Thank you for the time you put into this labor of love.
As an atheist, i approve this message. Love Ricky!
I mean, i once watched a comedian do a joke about grandparents, and my grandfather died the month before. I didn't laugh, i just got a bit sad thinking about my grandfather... and that's where it ended. I just thought about my grandfather for a few minutes, composed myself, and by then the jokes were about something else and i laughed again. I didn't write an angry email, i didn't make a facebook post saying "how dare this comedian joke about grandparents when there's always someone somewhere who lost a grandparent" none of that! I just worked through my own shit and let the world work through theirs because that's shared freedom. i do not take away from others what i do not want others to take from me, be it a desire to grieve a loved one or a desire to make a joke.
Ricky is one of the Goats❤
Years ago over here in Britain we used to have a show called Points Of View. Usually on on Sunday either before or after another prog called Songs of Praise with people singing hymns from various churches... On BBC1. Great scheduling! Hah! Some of the things people wrote in to complain about were ridiculous! And they were just as vociferous, angry, miserable, unfounded and cancelling (even if the knew what they were cancelling or not) as social media can be right now! So people have always found a way to complain, it's simply easier now. What Ricky does is challenge. And people don't like their beliefs challenged on the whole. Not me like, I love a challenge!
Why oh why oh why does the BBC continue to…..
Ricky gervais is my favourite comedian always has been 🥰
"Stephen Fry on American vs British Comedy" - I highly recommend this Brit, who in my opinion describes many things very well. But I laughed out loud at this video)
Love Stephen Fry!
"We give the name god to something we dont know the exact name" i like that, well done man great reaction, love from the uk
It'll make it to RUclips!...let's see if it lasts!
I totally agree - laughter is often the "best medicine." How often have you had an ache or a pain... and you promptly forget you have it as long as you're laughing? And I'm SO excited that Ricky said something I've been thinking for decades... "If we evolved from apes, why are there still apes around?" Seriously... that's not how evolution works! (Okay... stepping down off my soap box now)
Cliff/Rob- it’s not some people that hate your face, it’s all of us my brother! Lol I’m playing, we love your reactions mate!
I treat people as I want to be treated... it's that simple.
You gotta love Ricky - he's always been able to defend his work & opinions so eloquently. Nor should he have to - but his hilarious responses are pure gold!🤣 Plus, he has a degree in Philosophy (FACT!)
I've been to his stand up gigs twice (once just last month in Dublin!)and he was BRUTAL - no subject is off limits with him - F**king Hilarious! He point blank refuses to 'dilute' his comedy - why should he? If it's funny and makes you laugh, then that is what comedy is about or it's pointless. If people are offended, THEN DON'T WATCH - simple. MORE RICKY PLEASE! 🤣
PS Also thanks for sharing your deleted comments probs - I thought it was just me, but ole YT are random AF!
The only thing thats offends me is people who get offended on my behalf of things im not offended by. My mum fell out with her long time friend bcause she called me weird about something I do. I said im not bothered mum, its just her opinion but she still doesn't speak to her. And who could hate your face. Your adorable 😊
If you haven't seen the movie he wrote and directed called The Invention Of Lying, I def recommend it. It's basically mocking the origins Christianity but in a comedic way and it's great
Oh wow, I typed my comment before I got to the part of the movie where he talks about the movie. Highly recommend
Ricky knows the real world and doesn't let fame get to him that's why I love him so much.
Ricky....smart and funny! Can't beat that!
U..2999 vs Atheist...3000 perfect answer perfect debate 😆🕉️☮️
I do not understand this... Shinto alone has more than 8000 Kami-s...
That movie he was in about lying is a really good watch
I'm offended Cliff always wears a baseball cap when He has such great hair.
20:09 - 4 years undergrad degree, 4 years masters degree, 5 years postgraduate degree, 10-20 years of progressive and incremental experimentation, publication and years of peer review of the findings.
Then some guy who didn’t finish high school on Twitter: “Bullshit”.
Thank you Cliff, for showing Ricky 👍
You asked for our opinion , well I do agree about what you said regarding there being an energy or something being bigger than us . Perhaps if you'd like to learn a bit more about things like that , you might just like to watch a few video's of Matt Fraser , give it a try , it was an eye-opener to me and many others.👍 you might be very surprised !👍💖🤗
Ricky Gervais have a way of profound way of thinking that exceeds a lot of minds in this world. He might be brass and rough around the edges, but he stands firm to his believes and he is not afraid to tell them.
Another good one would be "Best of Christopher Hitchens". He was an amazing road scholar and a revolutionary.
I was a choirboy when I was a kid at my local church, Sunday school etc....... If I meet god I'll believe in him.
We all need ricky in our lives
Invention of Lying is great, Louis is in it too
Darren Brown had a great experiment with a scientist, who was also an atheist. It highlighted the emotional range of humans and how we associate emotional experiences we don't understand with something bigger than ourselves. It also highlighted how manipulation dictates the human experience.
Ricky makes you think, love him
Someone said something like "Religion is peoples favorite toys. I have no problem with you playing with them at home, but don't bring your toys to my place and force me and my children to play with them"
That was Christopher Hitchens.
Love your reactions mate! ❤
When I'm thinking about someone bigger than me, my go to answer is elephants.
Ricky has an interesting perspective, thanks Cliff!
It stayed on the tube as i saw it😂😂😂😂
Was going to edit the other comment, but....
If you put up something I don't like, I'll, ...well..., I'll, um not watch it? Maybe I won't recommend it to a friend....
Love your vids Cliff. Avengers unite!
8:45 I hate your face! (comedy gold right there 😂)
27:20 YES!!! I had a whole paragraph on this, but this is all that would stick...SERIOUSLY...tried FOUR edits...(each gone within 30sec.)
I find Ricky Gervais utterly hilarious and deeply profound. He's simply a brilliant man. I share his views on the universe, so I have no ideology to defend and no need to feel offended. About this propensity for taking offense: It's always seemed to me that if people are truly secure in their own beliefs/POV, they won't feel so threatened by someone not sharing their stance. IMO, the more offended the person, the more uncertain in their own belief system they are.
Why not cum out the window?
Ricky Gervais is an amazing force.
You don’t believe in 2999 I just don’t believe in one more
Love that line
Said it my whole life!
if I say something that offends you that’s your problem not my problem
I love Ricky Gervais. He’s brilliant!
Yeah that book advert flashing up was weird.
To counter the negative comments, I wish you a long and healthy life
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND "Tom Traubert's Blues (4 Sheets to the Wind in Copenhagen)" by Tom Waits (Also known as "Waltzing Matilda"). His voice is so unique that one critic once described it as though "it was soaked in a vat of bourbon, left hanging in the smokehouse for a few months and then taken outside & run over with a car"! He's a well-regarded & respected songwriter from within the "Rock" genre from the 70's & 80's. I'd LOVE to hear your take on his signature song. Link Here: ruclips.net/video/hW2vyytxCGM/видео.html
Love u bro keep up the good work
Those who send you threats like that over a song have severe mental issues. Never respond to them in any way, shape or form. If you do so you're validating their ignorance.
Here’s one for you….. Steven fry on religion, it’s a very short video (maybe 2.5 mins) it’s taken from an interview he done about 8-10 years ago, even if you don’t do a reaction video to it, it’s still worth a watch
Thanks for putting up with all the "im offended" BS. Subbed!
I don't know if you have time for reading Cliff, but I have to say even though I'd already thought my way out of belief in a god, what really gelled and cemented it for me was reading The God Delusion (Richard Dawkins)
Ricky Gervais is far more diplomatic I'd say (what the fuck I know right??) .. but the two are so complementary in their views and delivery.
There's something so liberating and clarifying in freedom from instilled doctrine.
The Foundation interview ....its their advertising you see.
Yeah, that was dope great video
didn't notice your burp but thats some lad shit so I liked the video
I've never been married or had kids but all my friends ask me for advice about their kids and marriage and get angry when I say I don't know. Sometimes I think of a logical solution to an issue and they get mad because they only want me to agree with their decisions. So, yes Ricky, don't ask the average person his opinion, because, like me, I don't know.
You should definitely watch that movie Cliff.
I think this a great example of an equivocation fallacy. Ricky changes the definition of a theist throughout the premises of his argument. It went from one who believes in a deity or deities to one who does not believe in deities. This is so he can create a false equivalency between atheism and theism. However, a theist may not believe in certain deities but by definition they believe in one or more. There is also an implication within his argument that the difference between theism and atheism is insignificant enough to be negligible. This is based on quantitative comparison of deities one believes in. However, in certain contexts a difference even in a small quantity can be significant. For example a person who is unemployed would not say they are in the same circumstance as their employed friend because they only have one more job than they do.
Ricky is always interesting 🤔 makes you think
Like so many of us, his adopted purpose (not really purpose, but goal) in life is to seek little bits of happiness here and there that will see him through another day until he can die. And what is happiness in an atheistic worldview but Dopamine, serotonin, endorphins, and oxytocin, the feel-good drugs? A life spent chasing a drug fix.
you got subliminal advertised at the fifteen minute mark, sir cliff
I love how Dawkins just smiles.
Here's how it works -
Answer this question: _Do you believe that a deity exists?_
If you said anything other than "Yes." then you are an atheist. That's it.
My chicken just got run over crossing a road!
If we're being honest, nobody knows "what happens" when we die, period.
Having said that, I believe that we were All dead for the whole time before we're born, and it didn't seem to bother me in the least... 😕🤷
I believe that death will be nothing to us. When we exist, death is not, and when death exists, we are not. I believe that all sensations and consciousness ends with death, and therefore in death, there is neither pain nor pleasure. I think that people's fear of death arises from the belief that in death, there is awareness...
As for the existence of a God(s). I'm a Truth seeker.
My atheism is but a side effect, through such endeavor...
I wish more people would try and understand that one can't just pick and choose one's beliefs. One is either Convenienced by the amount of supporting Evidence/Reason, in support of it's claims, or one isn't, Period. And if you think that I'm wrong, I challenge you to, "choose to believe" that you can fly, and get up on the roof of your house and take that leap of faith off, much like you do for your "God." 😁👍
Having said that, I wish more people would try and understand that our beliefs actually Do matter, because they inform our actions. If one holds irrational beliefs, it can and will result in irrational behavior, like believing that you could fly and jumping off of the roof of your house lol..
I can no more believe that a flying monkey lives in my ass, than i can agod exists. But would be happy to believe in both, if there were Any rational, extraordinary, supporting Evidence/Reason we're to be shown to be true...
I grew up pentecostal an you were basically condemned to hell for questioning anything.
Ricky is unique. Your offended by my defense of your opinionated offence. And around we go.
Nice stuff Cliff.(ex catholic too)
Richard Dawkins is well
Known in the atheist community.I actually went to one of his lectures about the book he wrote called “The God Delusion”.He is speaking at the Richard Dawkins Foundation lecture.Richard Dawkins is the guy in the middle with the glasses.
Physics has revealed to us that the universe runs on a set of rules/laws so maybe it was created. or maybe its just 1 universe in a multiverse and the rules of this reality are just 1 of many possible combinations.
A few of our comedians are actually very intelligent.
I like your face, Cliff ❤
There will always be someone bigger than you. You're more afraid of not believing so the bigger guy is not going to hate you
❤
Steve Colbert means the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.
He’s smart and funny! 😂
I once heard Ricky say, in one of these interviews, that everyone is in fact an agnostic. You may have the greatest faith in a god or whatever, or you may have the most antagonistic attitude toward any faith, but at the end of the day NO ONE actually knows what the fact is. NONE of us actually know, so that makes everyone an agnostic - which is actually similar to what he just said about the three doors. Two of the doors are about beliefs, the third door is about a fact, different categorys
Here's my take:
I've tried to sum it up in as few words as possible, a person born deafblind would still know the theory of gravity if they dropped a brick and it hit their toes because they wouldn't do it twice, but they'd never even comprehend a "God" in their lifetime if left alone and never taught any means of being indoctrinated such as braille. If they did have a schizophrenic discourse no religious person worldwide could be offended because it wouldn't be the same God. I also suspect they'd be inconceivably more appreciative of amazing foods that science brought them and they would thank the person who fed it to them not the sky. In a nutshell, to that person, who is unaware of a universe, unaware of almost all concepts besides physical touch, a person SO co-dependent, whoever holds food and water becomes a God. Now, the question becomes, "why does believing in a God make a difference to me, to you and what does that God do for you if you aren't doing it yourself?"
I myself have arrived at "whether or not I believed in God wouldn't make a difference to my life, but my death." I've also realised that God doesn't do anything for me, I do it. Whether or not you believe does nothing, whether or not I believe holds me morally accountable beyond expectation. If I'm being attacked I'm still not to murder? Hell. Lose lose.
After that, How the universe was created can be left at "I don't know" and I can still be a decent person within reason, without having to face Hell.
If you live in a society that truly has free speech, at some point you're going to be "offended." I put that in quotes because nothing anyone says or does can automatically "offend" anyone else. to be offended, or not, is a personal choice made on a case by case basis.
The funny thing about "something" bigger... might be just a civilisation what is a few 1000's years more advanced than us... like the old saying imagine a person from 3000 years ago meeting you now with a cellphone, its magic for them, normal for us.
America just needs to get to a place were, human life is worth more than profits.
Have you seen his Golden globe roastings? I'm guessing so.
So far so GREAT 👍
Cliff is smart ....
Both Frank Skinner and Johnny Vegas are English comedians who are practising Catholics. Of course, the English comedic world is much fuller of former, lapsed or decaredly ex-catholics. Show me any English panel show, and (by background) I can tell you "Catholic, Catholic, Catholic, Jewish, Catholic." I share this information at the risk of fueling Protestant anger, but where are the Protestant comedians? Of course some of the Puritans that we packed off to America thought laughing or even "smiling wantonly" was a sin, so maybe we shouldn't have too high hopes.
I don't believe in religion. I don't know if there's a god. Weird shit happens all the time. Is it spirits?? Who knows?
I try to avoid attacking any particular religious belief. Not simply to be polite, but because attacks on irrational beliefs strengthen those beliefs. It's a very human reaction to being told you're wrong. Also, the most harmful believers are the ones who think their religion is under attack. I don't want my disbelief to fuel someone's violence. So I am careful to frame denial of any religion as denial of every religion. I don't believe in yours the same way I don't believe any of the others.
From the outside, every religion is obviously false. Nobody of sound mind joins a religion. Children and people in pain - these are who join. That's not to say that religious people are insane; just that you can trace the origin of their belief to a period of vulnerability.
All of the amazing experiences that cement your belief - if you had been raised in a different culture, you would have a different description for each experience that would cement a different belief. It's the same experience, but your religion tells you what to call it or how to think about it.
That said, I still find some residual bitterness about the lies I was taught, and I find myself attacking people who espouse those lies. I'm only human. But I try to be a better human.
Death threats? Man kudos to you for dealing with the people from the bins, to do something with value. 👍🏻
Gervais is a sharp tack, almost always worth a listen, especially if you don’t always agree.
imagine saying something doesn’t exist because we can’t see or measure it while at the same time saying we aren’t special…. Wait what? There’s sort of a confused arrogance to it, but he’s nonetheless engaging & usually funny.
BTW no I don’t believe in “God” but I’ve seen enough to know that there is that which we do not know.
The third door is not at all irrelevant.
What he's saying , is that agnosticism (not knowing) is not in the same category as atheism (not believing in god/s) and theism (believing in god/s). Agnosticism is not some midway point on the scale between theism and atheism. It's not on the scale at all. It's a different topic. Theism and atheism are to do with belief. Agnosticism is to do with knowledge claims. They are not mutually exclusive. Most Western atheists, for instance, are agnostic atheists. They don't claim to know absolutely but due to lack of evince for the existence of gods and evidence against the existence of particular gods, they don't believe. Most theists are gnostic theists, in that they claim to know, for certain, that god/s is/exist. Saying you don't know, for certain, is the logical position, as virtually nothing, outside of pure mathematics, is disprovable absolutely. If you hold that position you're agnostic. However, it still hasn't addressed your belief. You either believe something, or you don't. It's probability, if we think something is improbable we tend not to believe. If we believe something is probable we tend to believe. If you're agnostic, you still haven't answered what you believe. You may have weak or strong disbelief but you either believe in 'x' or you don't. "I don't know" is not about belief, it's about knowing or not knowing. It's not an answer to the question, 'do you believe in god/s?". If you say you don't know what you believe, you're effectively lying to yourself. What you're actually saying is 'I don't KNOW for certain. Everyone knows whether they belive in gods and/or goddesses or not. How certain or not that they are in that belief is a whole different question. :)
Ricky is great. I love his takes on religion. His Noah's arc bit is hilarious. He is wrong about the position of atheism tho. It's a positive claim that gods don't exist. I think he picked up that idea from internet atheists. It's just a flimsy way of shifting the burden of proof onto thiests. If he's not making a positive claim then he's agnostic.
I Don know is bs! Ricky is Right
I'm bigger than you. Believe in me!
Your title is good, but Gervais actually holds a degree in philosophy from University College London. That's why his logic is impeccable (English, unlike "Continental" philosophy, cares a great deal more about logic than "grand ideas").
