QOTD: I haven’t ridden any green horses exactly but I’ve ridden some young ones (6-7) that have only just been brought into the riding school life. Personally I prefer the younger ones as I like horses that are very open minded to trying new things and figuring it out together with me as opposed to more experienced lessons horses who either just do what they should immediately because they’re so well behaved or so stubborn that they refuse just because they know they can. I like a lot of personality, quirks and energy in my horses and I like being able to help them move forward with encouraging aids and pats. Love green horses.
QOTD: yes I have ridden baby ponies, last winter I rode a 4 year old called blaze and helped introduce him to riding school life! Now at 5 he teaches younger children ( he is very small) on leadrein and off and has even done Pony camp XC! Right now I’m riding a 6yo speed demon 😅
I have ridden many green horses and ponies! I rode a New Forest mare for around 6 months, when I first rode her she had cantered a handful of times, and only ever trotted jumps, then in December I took her to her first show and first time off property. She was perfect! She’s now pretty confident at 18” and has done 2’ foot. I’ve also ridden many other young and green horses, like the gelding I’m riding now! I no doubt prefer green beans just as the feeling when you finally achieve something you’ve been working towards for so long is unbeatable. And being able to bring them along, give them so many firsts, seeing how much potential they have, and being able to start their decade+ career is an amazing feeling. I love schoolmasters now and again but greenies will forever have my heart. Plus their baby personalities are THE cutest things and it has made me enjoy the little things SO much more. And riding green horses and ponies complete changed riding for me. If you couldn’t tell, I could go on for ages about why I love them 🙈
AOTD: I ride two, quite green, 7 year old ponies at my riding school, and I absolutely love them! I hadn’t ridden many green ponies before I moved to my new yard, and I’ve definitely fallen in love. I love being able to feel them learning throughout the lesson, and seeing them grow in confidence and strength each week :)
AOTD: the greenest horse I’ve ever ridden was a 6 year old quarter horse mare, and I was only the third person to ever ride her! I only did walk and trot since she was still fairly green, and I’m not a super experienced rider yet lol. She’s my trainer’s horse so I’ve been able to watch her grow up and now she’s jumping! She’s truly the sweetest (and one of the craziest) horses I’ve ever met 😂
i am breaking in my own pony at the moment. It’s really hard with a lot of downs. but the ups are really rewarding and it is a lot of fun. I also like to ride more experience horses to switch it ip sometimes 🤩
QOTD: I've ridden 2 greenish horses who still need experience. Their about 8 or 9ish and were bought together to my riding school last year and have been taught to be a riding school pony. They came together, Bertie- 13.2hh piebald cob and Copper- 13.2hh chestnut cob. Bertie has learnt a lot quicker and has definitely got the jist of it all now. Copper is still learning but he's nearly there. Their both incredible to ride and so sweet. I think i prefer the young horses who are still learning as being a part of their learning and watching them grow in confidence is so nice.
QOTD: quite a few! And it depends if I just want to get on and have a nice ride then it’s nice to have a schoolmaster but youngsters are so rewarding and give you something to work on every session
QOTD: I ride a 3 year old mare, 10 year old stallion and a 20 year old gelding which are all MASSIVELY different of course haha! It's crazy to go from riding a really comfy little mare one week to a bouncy stallion with big strides the next! And then the gelding to mix everything up hahaha it's great for inproving though and they're all amazing, you did a fab job on Homer!
