I'm bipolar and have had a few psychotic breakdowns. Something that REALLY worries me about Gabbie's faith is the fact that she had religious delusions. I'd also like to note that if the root of your recovery is in religion, then that recovery is shakey. Should you question or lose your faith, it's super easy to just return to past behaviors.
Why does this seem to be a trend with this illness? Not always but ive seen it before. There was a blogger I used to follow who wrote major sm*t and she was bipolar. Then she had a total change to majorly religious, deleted her website and started posting religious texts and calling anyone who liked her old stuff sinners. Then she came back and claimed she was fine, then she’d flip back to religion. I had to walk away because it just got really upsetting.

Earlier this year I was dipping my toe into paganism, but then I started fixing on numbers that I saw around me. I decided that I don't care what I believe, I'm not gonna figure it out. It's not worth potentially isolating myself from everybody I care about, and it's definitely not worth losing my life over. I don't know, it feels like the safest option. I really appreciated your commentary on her religious zealous. It is strange how we see many folks go so hard down the religious pipeline into alt right circles. I'm totally speculating here but it almost feels like with someone like Gabbie who has openly disclosed she has BPD that one of those symptoms grandiosity. It feels like Christianity lays a very convenient foundation for someone who needs a justification for those thoughts of self importance and superiority. Neuroscience has even found out that brain damage/ neurodivergence in certain areas of the brain leads to extreme religiosity or even religious/ spiritual delusions. I find it very plausible that certain mental health struggles that might not be visible on brain scans could have the same effect. In psychosis religious or spiritual delusions are extremely common for example. There’s definitely a clear link between neurodivergence and religiosity and if you then factor in a deep need for absolution or feeling special it becomes a match made in heaven (pun intended).

I'm a Jessie Smiles fan, love the Do We Know Them podcast, and what GH did to her was absolutely awful. That said, I was glad to see her thriving off of social media when her YMCA post came out because I think it showed that people can get a "normal job" after social media and take care of themselves and be fine. It can even be a good thing to disconnect, and I would love it if more creators did that. Her coming back is literally the worst thing to see.

I wanted to provide some additional commentary / context that I really haven't seen many people talk about, (and it makes sense why as she doesn't talk about it much,) but I had a fairly similar upbringing if my assumptions are correct. Gabbie has said many times that she is Middle Eastern, but specifically Lebanese. Many people refer to her as a white woman, which I don't believe is fair as SWANA (Southwest Asian and North African, or more commonly known as Middle Eastern / North African) people are being added to the US Census, and they certainly don't function socially as "white" in a post 9/11 world, but anyway ... I've seen in videos in the past (of her sisters, herself, in their family home,) of wood crosses hanging on the walls. I myself am Lebanese and Palestinian, raised Maronite, and the largest denomination of Christianity in Lebanon is actually the Maronite faith; it is a very old church, (one of the oldest in the world,) and a rite of Eastern Catholicism. The Maronite church was founded in ~400AD and the traditions of these Maronites in Lebanon are ancient, and our traditions are deeply embedded in our Lebanese culture. Maronites recognize chapters of the Bible that western denominations do not, there is a lot of spiritualism and mysticism held in the traditions (burning bahour, or frankincense, use of the evil eye, etc.) Many Maronites read from untranslated bibles and read Syriac / Aramaic, the language of Jesus. Maronites however tend to be incredibly conservative, xenophobic, anti-immigration and anti-refugee, particularly in Lebanon. I shouldn't get too much into it, but the Maronites are responsible for a lot of hate and bloodshed during the Lebanese Civil War, and many today remain sympathetic to these forces. It's entirely possible she was raised Orthodox, but not very likely. Perhaps she converted to a Western denomination like Evangelicalism ... but I wanted to add this additional piece, from my own experience, because I've literally never heard a single person bring this up. This is obviously a massive generalization, as progressive Maronites exist (myself among them,) but it's a very old, insular, and reserved culture. Incredibly strict. I know personally what it's like to grow up stifled by not just Catholic tradition, but Arab cultural norms, because we are both. We are both Arab and Catholic. It makes finding oneself incredibly difficult, and if you add fame and mental health struggle to the mix, I can only imagine how much harder that is. That of course is not to excuse her behavior. Like I said, I grew up Maronite, and honestly I'm still religious, but I'm pro SW, absolutely not a TERF, and do not shove my beliefs onto other people at all, as she does. It also doesn't give you free license to treat other people the way she does.

In my personal experience, a lot of "non religious" people that suddenly do an 180 into extreme religious views are children or family members of devout religious people, specially conservative ones. Instead of just suddenly believing what they didn't, most of the time they're succumbing to the fears deeply ingrained in them by their religious upgringing, which they've been surpressing for a while. Because at the end of the day, the fear of being condemmed by God can be so overwhelming to our little minds that, even if we logically don't agree, we just end up giving in.
Ty for the context. While it is speculation to some extent it would be difficult for her not be be effected at all. Like even if her family wasn't religious she grew close to that culture. A lot of xianity culture in western atheists too, for example.

Firstly, you look stunning today! I've said this elsewhere but I feel like Gabbi's "apology" wasn't because she recognised the harm she caused but because her new religious beliefs/ group look down on those actions. So she wouldn't be "apologising" if she didn't have those beliefs in god. Gabbi really reminds me of my sister who also had ADHD, bipolar and recently became a Christian and my sister has also done/ said a lot of really hurtful shit during her manic episodes. But the difference is that my sister has actually genuinely apologised to me for them when I really wasn't expecting her to as I'd already forgiven her. Before my sister got diagnosed with bipolar disorder, I really didn't understand just how horrifying it is to experience. I just thought it was a nice break from the depression where you're happier than normal. But holy shit it's absolutely not that and we really fucking dread those manic episodes. She's done things during them that could literally be from a horror movie, it's that bad. All that to say, I usually have a lot of lenience towards people's actions during manic episodes. But Gabbi hasn't taken any accountability for the pain she's caused and is continuing to cause harm, only caring about herself. While some of her actions may have been caused by her disabilities, there's a line where it's more like shes just a shitty person using them as an excuse. I do still hope that she can grow and change enough to really recognise the extent of what shes done, but that hope is really dwindling as the years go on. (Sorry for ranting, I have a lot of opinions lol)

I think when people make content around Gabbie they are purposely not mentioning Jessi out of respect for Jessi. Jessi has been very open and vocal about not wanting her experience constantly brought up by others and told for her. I think it would be disrespectful to go against those wishes and talk about Gabbie and that situation when Jessi has made multiple videos asking for that very specific thing to stop

Gabbie's "apology" video in my opinion, was a slap in the face to everyone she hurt... If she can name them in her "Holding people accountable series" she can name them in her apology... not a general "we have no beef! it's all good guys!" Oxford and that video showed she didn't change.

I really appreciated your commentary on her religious zealous. It is strange how we see many folks go so hard down the religious pipeline into alt right circles. I'm totally speculating here but it almost feels like with someone like Gabbie who has openly disclosed she has BPD that one of those symptoms grandiosity. It feels like Christianity lays a very convenient foundation for someone who needs a justification for those thoughts of self importance and superiority. I feel like this is all just going to lead her down a rabbit hole of becoming a conservative Christian conspiracy theorist if she isn't already. I really do hope she gets help. Even religion can be a cult and those with mental health issues are often prayed upon or fall victim. But also at some point she has to take accountability too.

Couldn’t agree more with this comment. Neuroscience has even found out that brain damage/ neurodivergence in certain areas of the brain leads to extreme religiosity or even religious/ spiritual delusions. I find it very plausible that certain mental health struggles that might not be visible on brain scans could have the same effect. In psychosis religious or spiritual delusions are extremely common for example. There’s definitely a clear link between neurodivergence and religiosity and if you then factor in a deep need for absolution or feeling special it becomes a match made in heaven (pun intended).

I'm at 11 minutes where you talk about people wanting Gabbie to succeed and I just had to comment. I'm a Jessie Smiles fan, love the Do We Know Them podcast, and what GH did to her was absolutely awful. That said, I was glad to see her thriving off of social media when her YMCA post came out because I think it showed that people can get a "normal job" after social media and take care of themselves and be fine. It can even be a good thing to disconnect, and I would love it if more creators did that. Her coming back is literally the worst thing to see.

Now as an adult I have a hard time watching her struggle so much because I'm feeling that manic pain, anxieties, and depression too. She isn't a good person. Hey Hannah! I wanted to provide some additional commentary / context that I really haven't seen many people talk about, (and it makes sense why as she doesn't talk about it much,) but I had a fairly similar upbringing if my assumptions are correct. Gabbie has said many times that she is Middle Eastern, but specifically Lebanese. Many people refer to her as a white woman, which I don't believe is fair as SWANA (Southwest Asian and North African, or more commonly known as Middle Eastern / North African) people are being added to the US Census, and they certainly don't function socially as "white" in a post 9/11 world, but anyway ... I've seen in videos in the past (of her sisters, herself, in their family home,) of wood crosses hanging on the walls. I myself am Lebanese and Palestinian, raised Maronite, and the largest denomination of Christianity in Lebanon is actually the Maronite faith; it is a very old church, (one of the oldest in the world,) and a rite of Eastern Catholicism. The Maronite church was founded in ~400AD and the traditions of these Maronites in Lebanon are ancient, and our traditions are deeply embedded in our Lebanese culture. Maronites recognize chapters of the Bible that western denominations do not, there is a lot of spiritualism and mysticism held in the traditions (burning bahour, or frankincense, use of the evil eye, etc.) Many Maronites read from untranslated bibles and read Syriac / Aramaic, the language of Jesus. Maronites however tend to be incredibly conservative, xenophobic, anti-immigration and anti-refugee, particularly in Lebanon. I shouldn't get too much into it, but the Maronites are responsible for a lot of hate and bloodshed during the Lebanese Civil War, and many today remain sympathetic to these forces. It's entirely possible she was raised Orthodox, but not very likely. Perhaps she converted to a Western denomination like Evangelicalism ... but I wanted to add this additional piece, from my own experience, because I've literally never heard a single person bring this up. This is obviously a massive generalization, as progressive Maronites exist (myself among them,) but it's a very old, insular, and reserved culture. Incredibly strict. I know personally what it's like to grow up stifled by not just Catholic tradition, but Arab cultural norms, because we are both. We are both Arab and Catholic. It makes finding oneself incredibly difficult, and if you add fame and mental health struggle to the mix, I can only imagine how much harder that is. That of course is not to excuse her behavior. Like I said, I grew up Maronite, and honestly I'm still religious, but I'm pro SW, absolutely not a TERF, and do not shove my beliefs onto other people at all, as she does. It also doesn't give you free license to treat other people the way she does.

Thank you for explaining this thoroughly. I'm Greek Orthodox (and ethnically Greek) and I never understood the religious landscape in Lebanon and assumed, incorrectly, that most were Orthodox.
In my personal experience, a lot of "non religious" people that suddenly do an 180 into extreme religious views are children or family members of devout religious people, specially conservative ones. Instead of just suddenly believing what they didn't, most of the time they're succumbing to the fears deeply ingrained in them by their religious upgringing, which they've been surpressing for a while. Because at the end of the day, the fear of being condemmed by God can be so overwhelming to our little minds that, even if we logically don't agree, we just end up giving in.
Ty for the context. While it is speculation to some extent it would be difficult for her not be be effected at all. Like even if her family wasn't religious she grew close to that culture. A lot of xianity culture in western atheists too, for example.

I always thought her music was really good, especially the 2WAYMIRROR album in 2019. she felt so in touch, with stuff like her roast myself video. but then it was just obviously avoidable scandal after obviously avoidable scandal. the brush drama, where she told her fans to manage their expectations? it felt like she wanted to be the villain but without the negative parts.

25:39 I do feel that too. I've only ever consumed her content through drama but I still feel it. I think it stems from how "easy" a fix it'd be, it seems she'd do much better in life without an online presence but she just persists in a field that's so clearly hurt her and the people around her. There is this great potential for change and self improvement with her that's just out of reach and that's frustrating to see but it also fuels a sense of hope. I do hope she can be happy with a mundane life one day.

Firstly, you look stunning today! I've said this elsewhere but I feel like Gabbi's "apology" wasn't because she recognised the harm she caused but because her new religious beliefs/ group look down on those actions. So she wouldn't be "apologising" if she didn't have those beliefs in god. Gabbi really reminds me of my sister who also had ADHD, bipolar and recently became a Christian and my sister has also done/ said a lot of really hurtful shit during her manic episodes. But the difference is that my sister has actually genuinely apologised to me for them when I really wasn't expecting her to as I'd already forgiven her.
Before my sister got diagnosed with bipolar disorder, I really didn't understand just how horrifying it is to experience. I just thought it was a nice break from the depression where you're happier than normal. But holy shit it's absolutely not that and we really fucking dread those manic episodes. She's done things during them that could literally be from a horror movie, it's that bad.
All that to say, I usually have a lot of lenience towards people's actions during manic episodes. But Gabbi hasn't taken any accountability for the pain she's caused and is continuing to cause harm, only caring about herself. While some of her actions may have been caused by her disabilities, there's a line where it's more like shes just a shitty person using them as an excuse. I do still hope that she can grow and change enough to really recognise the extent of what shes done, but that hope is really dwindling as the years go on.
(Sorry for ranting, I have a lot of opinions lol)
