GOLF BACKSWING TIP - SHOULD YOU LIFT THE FORWARD HEEL OR NOT?

  • In this golf backswing tip I'm answering the question of whether or not you should lift the forward heel or not as go back. I get asked this question a lot especially by senior golfers so hopefully this clears things up.
    Developing a fully coiled backswing is vital if you want to hit the ball long and straight. If you aren't flexible due to age or a physical limitation then you need to do what's necessary to get you set at the top of your backswing.
    Other people are flexible even as a senior golfers so should you lift the heel too? I talk about that in this golf backswing tip because there are plenty of people I see who have plenty of coil and it might not be necessary for them to lift the heel.
    Watch this tip and watch the shots I hit from the back view to see what I do then assess your own shoulder coil to determine if you should lift your heel or not.

    Okay I started your body swing today, what a difference. My heel on my left foot came up and it felt so natural. I connected so well with the ball. I just let it do what it wanted to. I was always keeping it on the ground and I get so much better results. But I can’t think about it or I over compensate and mess up. Thank you so much for taking time and explaining these techniques.

    My first "first to comment"!
    Thanks for this tip, Paul! I was just recently experimenting with lifting the forward heel. I liked the results because it felt like I was able to focus more on the lower body than my arms. Of course, 'turning off my arms' is so simple to say, but SO VERY hard to actually do. I've been trying for years, and still don't have the feeling down.
    Now I have a Paul sanctioned way to focus on my feet instead of my arms. Really looking forward to working with this one.
    BTW... I have the bodyswing lesson materials, but find these tips to be a great supplement that helps to explain and expand on important topics. Keep them coming!

      You're welcome. Yes, I should have mentioned that if you are thinking of the heel you are thinking of lower body. I like that one. Yes, everything I teach fits with The Body Swing. Keep at it.

    I too have started to let my left heel come up a little, maybe an inch, during my backswing, a concession to age and loss of flexibility. What I have found is that planting my heel back down is a good way to begin my downswing and begin my weight shift and use the ground more.

    Yep you are correct sir. No torque, no compression of the ball but at sixty it is hard to do. I make an effort to pinch the right knee in at address. One more thing I got from watching you was the reaffirmation of the right elbow being close to the body. I was glad to see you display it. Another great video Paul thanks.

      You can pinch the knee. That is a good thought. Right elbow tucks if you are not hitting hard with the arms and start with the body.

      Harshad Mody just my thoughts. I pinch the right knee to the target and keep it there at address in order to be able to keep the left heel down during this swing. Just a home remedy.

    I’ve started using this method due to restrictions on turn. Found it so much easier to turn in net. My driver seems much more powerful so be interesting to take it to the course. I’ve lost lots power over 12 months. Struggling to hit 180 m drives now so hoping this will give me back some distance

    I'm 64 & less flexible than before, I find the lift helps me in 2 ways, 1. to achieve shoulder turn without torture (!) & 2. When I re-plant heel down at top this helps me with weight transfer in downswing, the momentum then flows automatically & I finish with good balance. I also find a training rope helps me a lot with sequence & timing & gives me the feel I can then use with club.

      @paulwilsongolf  4 года назад +2

      You need to change the way you think. A 12 is okay but still not great. So what you are currently doing is not working because you will be stuck at this level forever. Not hitting is new and different. Problem is you keep trying to hit your best shots every time. This gets you back to hitting and you never make the switch. I go through this daily with students. First, you need to do the grip here: ruclips.net/video/jQZLp8bF-Ww/видео.html then get the wrists hinging and rehinging: ruclips.net/video/Xk7t9yHCO-I/видео.html hit ball doing that. Little 3/4 to 3/4 swings until every ball goes straight or left. You will feel your arms as you do this. Once you get that start doing a full swing still watching your ball for straight or hooked shots. Once you get that you switch your though to coiling and uncoiling. The final step is to completely turn off your arms in the downswing not hitting or helping the shot with the arms. I have tons of hip drills on the channel as well as come coiling tips now too. You can also do this drill until you have it mastered too. Like I said this is new and different and you are not good at it. So if you are not good at it quit trying to kill it. Get it slowly then speed up your body for more power in the future.

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  4 года назад

      If you are hooking it without trying to hook it you have a grip problem. You need to work on the neutral grip. Follow this tip: ruclips.net/video/jQZLp8bF-Ww/видео.html lower body needs to start first.

    I’m 75, and I’ve experimented a lot with the lead heel thing. For me, the less I allow that heel to come off the ground, the better I hit the ball. I’ve actually stopped doing it altogether. What I found was, the more that lead heel comes off the ground, the more the hips turn and the more weight gets shifted to the rear leg in the backswing. If I allow that to happen, I just can’t get everything back in sync coming down. I’m a believer that the fewer moving parts I have in my golf swing, the better my contact. I play a really tight golf course, so distance is not my primary goal. I just want to hit it straight. I’m willing to give up a few yards by keeping my lead heel down and making an 80-degree shoulder turn. It’s each to his own, but that’s my take on the lead heel...

    What would be the biggest difference between your swing and the tack & still swing

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  3 года назад +1

      The way to do a more rotational swing I teach would be to move your head coiling and uncoiling. The would want your head still. Up to you which you want to do. Once you pick one only follow that technique. Don't confuse the 2 otherwise neither will work.

  • @JoshuaAmmon

    Great content as usual. Paul my question is a bit off topic for this video but im wondering when you say keeping your arms loose do you mean upper shoulders as loose as possable and forarms with i think you said your grip at about 8/10?

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  4 года назад

      Arms are powerless in the downswing. I prefer them to be turn off going back too instead of flopping all over the place. So if you are working on turning your arms off yes, you would be relaxed as you set up. Your coil would start the arms moving back. At about 1/2 back you are manually setting the top in the fully hinged position as well as being fully coiled. Then you are using your body to hit it not your arms.

    Hi Paul - interesting tip - it got me wondering - if the left heel is raised a little bit, is pushing down on that heel yet another trigger to start uncoiling?

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  2 года назад

      Absolutely. This is what I have been doing. Just allows me to think about and feel this left side (which is tricky for me). The more you lift the hard you can come down. Maybe exaggerate for a bit until you are good at it then lessen.

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  2 года назад

      Glad you are doing the swings. This is what it takes. The downswing trigger varies from person to person. A less experienced person I would have using the belt buckle. If you feel you can do the heel and it is working then switch to that. This is the trigger I am trying to do.

    If you want to see real foot lift - check out the RUclips video "Jack Nicklaus miracle 1 iron Pebble Beach 1972" at the 1 minute 45 second point of the video you will see a man who won 18 Majors has his left foot with barely the toe on the ground. This gave him huge rotation and his back is to the target at the top of the swing. The motion of stamping the foot back down forces the hips back round keeping the hips and hands in front at impact. The ball of the right foot then drives into the ground also adding to the power. This is seen in this video in the slow motion shots at 8 mins in. Too many golfers are now flat footed and have no natural powerful rotation.

    What if a kid starts doing this but they hit better while doing it

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  Год назад

      I am fine with the heel lifting a little due to the coil lifting it not because the person is purposely lifting it up. Typically when the person lifts it purposely they do it too much. So 2-3 inches is what I like. More than that usually unnecessary especially for a kid.
