Fancied picking one of these up again, but Ford really do build rust buckets. This was the last ford I owned back in 2009. I’ve been with VW since. Although they have there own faults, they don’t rot underneath at all, where floor pans are concerned and sills.
Lovely cars VWs you’re right. Usually pretty well put together. Fords can be bad especially the vans but generally it’s all in the same places and easy to keep on top of if you know where to look. ST170s are over 20 years old now so we’re just dealing with the survivors. A lot of the really bad stuff most likely has been run into the ground and picked off by the MOT. They’ll be a sound one somewhere come and rejoin the club!!
@@st170restoration I’ve seen some on Facebook market place. Checked the MOT on some of them. To my amazement most of them have flown through the MOT. Failed on minimal stuff no mention of rot 🤔 for £1800 might be worth a punt again. It would only be a weekend car..
How many bolts did you have to cut on the rear? Changing the bottom arms on my last 170 was a headache and going to do a full subframe rebuild on my latest one. Enjoying the videos on the channel! Do you have Instagram?
It was just 2 I had to cut in the end. The actual bolts would come loose but the rubber inside had joined to the metal so had to be cut. Would have been more fiddly if it was still on the car for sure! Yep just set up a new one. It’s st170_restoration Good luck with it all 👍
@@st170restoration nice one, just dropped you a follow. Tackling the front subframe on mine now, but when it comes to the rear definitely seems best to bring it out as one
@@13992josh nice! Let me know how it goes. I’m gonna do my front subframe at the same time as I do the clutch most likely. Probably going to have to remove it anyway to replace the exhaust flexi section I had to cut so may as well do all the jobs together! I may live to regret it though ha!

Rear subframe is the same as Mk2 Focus, should be a straight swap (so I hear).
