"Making it Work is pretty self-explanatory, starring Doug as an insecure porn star with his merry band of pranksters - the band appearing as ‘Helping Hand Sex Therapists’. For costumes we got our stencilled lab coats and various high-tech sex toys including a feather duster and turkey baster. John’s Dr Strangelove character was a foretaste of things to come - Dr Strangelove was the house band at Vancouver’s Roxy Nightclub in the early ‘90s and included 3 Slugs: John, Richard & Wally.
In the video Steve Bosley has excellent Albert Einstein hair and is armed with his trusty toilet plunger, I have nerd glasses and too much brylcreem but I can’t remember what my sex toy was...
The video was shot by Rick and Stan primarily at the iconic 2400 Motel on Kingsway, which miraculously still exists. After a scary moment viewing the 5-page centrefold in Playgirl Magazine, Doug has a session with HH Sex Therapists which leads to a red carpet moment at the premiere of ‘Deep Slug starring Mr Doug’ and a limo ride with his porn partner. Eventually Mr Doug carries her off to a presumably triumphant love tryst in the 2400 Motel, and has to throw out the over-eager sex therapists who try to follow them into the notel motel. All good clean fun."

Doug and The Slugs were one of the most popular Vancouver based Bands ever! Their song "Too Bad" was a huge Hit that became the theme song for the most popular Stage Play ever in Vancouver, " The late 70's and 80's were fantastic for local bands in Greater Vancouver and you could hear great live music every weekend. Chilliwack & BTO carved the way then Bryan Adams made the Vancouver sound world famous but there were so many great bands like the well known Prism, Payolas, Powder Blues, Barney Bentall, Wild Root Orchestra, Trooper, Barney Bentall and the Punk & New Wave bands.

It's shocking that they weren't more popular here in the U.S. They were so good and fun. I remember seeing their song "Real Enough' on MTV and had to own that song!! I had to know who this band was. Ended up being a lifelong fan and NONE of my friends to this day have ever heard of them. Such a shame. Too Bad, Real Enough, Making it Work, Who Knows How to Make Love Stay.....so many great songs!!

I remember bopping to this as a young teenager. Taped it off the radio. Still a great song. I don't believe I had ever seen the video before however. I was really enjoying a trip down memory lane and laughing at the video, with the sound turned up... then I noticed the date of release. Damn! I'm getting old... 🤣
I ended up here after a reference to Doug and the Slugs "Too Bad" in regard to the Doug Ford - Greenbelt scandal 😄. Which is so appropriate. Hilarious; almost like the band had a crystal ball into the future! Thank you to the CBC News commenter that lead me to what is now likely going to be a few hours down the RUclips rabbit hole of songs/videos from my junior high & high school years.
