Thank you for posting this. This is great information to have. We've got an '89 Suburban that has this system stock along with A/C. I'm going to be swapping the refurbished intake and heads over from an older '75 engine so we can run a carb. It's got the same mounting holes that the heads you are using have. It's good to know that I don't have to sacrifice the serpentine belt system to make things happen with the swap.
If you can find a bracket setup off an 88-92 v8 camaro or caprice, they are alot shorter but a bit wider and will give you alot more hood clearance and will clear tall valve covers and you can run headers with no problem. I converted my 82 c10 to serpentine with a bracket setup off an 90 camaro and have been very happy with them and they look way nicer than the truck brackets.
@@flj232 yes it will bolt on your 305, the only thing is the serpentine brackets have 1 extra bolt hole on the passenger head that your engine doesn't have. You have 2 options, if your very careful you can drill and tap the front of the head and install the extra bolt, or option 2 is to leave that bolt out which you can get away with as long as you run BOTH of the support braces(one goes from the exhaust manifold bolt to the bracket and the other goes from the intake to the bracket. You will also need the water pump for the serpentine set up and if your gonna run AC you need a AC hose set off an 88-91 suburban without rear ac because the compressor is on the opposite side of the v belt set up. The alternator also uses a different electrical plug but they do sell a conversion plug to adapt the older wiring to work with the new alternator. All in all it's a pretty easy and straight forward swap.
Bad Luck Garage good call! This setup normally has an AC pump on the passenger side as well. I just deleted it with the pulley #becauseracecar. Does the vintage air system use the factory pump or does it come with its own unit?
An issue is have is is changed my intake on my engine to a EFI one and the intake has no mounting holes for the AC bracket. So now i have to figure what to do. I see your V belt setup had a green piece of metal that mounts on top of the intake and it has a eye on it for a cherry picker
if you do this way you need reverse flow water pumo...if you have a welder you can modify the tensioner put it under the alternator and run the belt regularly without all thise brackets, just use regular 350 brackets .only change pullys, as long as you have 40% of the waterpump wrapped it will run without grooves front or back. i used square tube for the tensioner. works great and no need for the bulky brackets
Hi I swapped out my belt setup for a serpentine. Got everything bolted on started right up, but noticed fan is wobbly. It’s pretty tight. I used harmonic balancer from swap. All bolts tight I got two bolts on left side and 4 bolts on right side brackets. Idler and tensioner seem good no noise and feel tight. Any ideas?
I have a 78 C10 350 an wanna ditch the v-belts too so bad in sick of them coming loose or maken noise . Questions I have do I need to chnage my water pump too ? Also my alt is on the passenger side not the driver side so woundering what all needs or needed to be done cause I'm gonna just grab what I need from junkyard an swap it on mine. Thanks
Hey! Yes you will need to change your water pump. I’d just get a replacement pump for the same year/make/model of your donor vehicle to make sure it all works together properly. Since the newer alternators put out more power you will probably want to completely replace the wire that feeds the battery with a heavier gauge. When I got my replacement alternator the instructions had diagram for how it should be wired.
@@pushrodgarage8716 ahh okay so I do glad I know before doing all of this. Yeah I can use my same alt I can just change the end face piece from a v-belt pulley to a serpentine setup Just woundering tho mine being a 78 350 would the later model pumps work on mine or not correctly cause there was like 4 different types for mine
So the more modern style components will all fit with no issues on to an old Gen 1 block? I have a 3970010 cast block (69-77) with vortec heads and components (alternator and waterpump only) from what i believe to be a 98 5.7. I want to put an AC compressor and power steering pump on it so i was thinking about taking components from a junk yard to do so, but i want to be sure its going to work
Yes that’s the casting on my block too. If you have vortec heads I believe it should all bolt up. Those should have 3 holes drilled on each head too, which helps.
These are the same accessory brackets I ran on my Oldsmobile 455 (with an adapter). One good thing to think about before installing then is that if you want a more powerful and more reliable alternator, you CAN use an AD244 alternator on these Chevy brackets, if you drill a new hole. It takes about a minute to do. Some guys also use a 1/4" grade 8 bolt, instead of drilling the bracket out, but that's generally if they're doing the upgrade whilenhe bracket is already bolted to the engine.
Ben Kalinowski I’ll have to check that out! A serpentine system is so much better than the old V belt setup. I like this setup because it was cheap and commonly available, but I will probably be needing a higher output alternator soon so I might upgrade to some lower profile mounts too.
Hello. Thanks for this video. I got one question what size belt did you use. I just installed this exact setup and I’m having trouble finding the correct belt
Has anyone else done this? I have small block i want to upgrade my charging system. I dont want to pay for one of those billet fancy systems. I have heard about having to drill into the passenger side head for one of the brackets. Anyone elaborate on this.
Does your passenger side head have any bolt holes? I believe this is very similar to the GMPP serpentine upgrade for SBC’s and even they say you can run with only one accessory bolt in the head. I am only running one and having no issues. I believe it is the one in the corner by the exhaust port and the valve cover.
Pushrod Garage thank you for replying. My old c10 runs so well but with the ac and the dual fans on the radiator it has taxed the charging system beyond its capabilities. I have one hole in the front and the current bracket is sharing the first bolt on the head for the exhaust. Any thoughts
Yeah I used to have that kind of setup where my PS pump needed a bolt from the exhaust. I pulled my brackets from a suburban in the junkyard and it didn’t have any braces that went to the exhaust so I have not been using any. This is on my drift car that regularly sees sustained 5,000+ rpm. I would recommend looking up the instructions for the GMPP kit on the Scoggin Dickey website to get an idea what the kit is all about. Remember if you are looking for a donor vehicle I got these brackets from an early 90’s suburban. The nice thing about these brackets is they bolt to the block as well as the head. The newer 95-99 brackets only bolt to the head so you would need heads that have 3 bolt holes on both sides.
Thanks for commenting! Yes I got the reverse rotation water pump. The serpentine setup is from a 94 suburban I believe so when I got the replacement parts that is what I searched for.
You sir are the real mvp. I was about to put a standart on my reverse setup without even knowing they were two different type of water pump! Thanks again you juste hjave save my build!
Jonathon Mann my alternator only had an excitor wire and the big power wire. I hooked the power wire to the battery feed on my fuse box and the excitor to a keyed power wire that goes through the alternator light on the cluster. Apparently the dash light is needed or it can cause run in issues. I hope that helps!
Hey Pushrod, I like your set up and I have a small block chevy 400 that I'm trying to do the same. What is the part # on the power steering and alternator bracket. I'm having a tough time trying to find it.
There is a GM performance parts serpentine upgrade kit PN 12497698 I believe that has all of these components. I just pulled them off a 94 suburban in a junkyard
jesus rios peralta that’s how mine is. It has been working fine. Just make sure you get brackets that also have that bottom bolt that goes into the block. The newer Vortec 5.7’s (95-99 model years I believe) brackets only bolt to the head so you would need all 3 bolt holes
Perfect my 350 is going into my 89 Chevy truck, so I’m glad I won’t have to spend a lot more money on new brackets and pulleys, And I see you didn’t install the a/c compressor.
Ok so i have a 1985 v belt setup on mine with a single wire alternator can i use this alternator and swap the pulley and can i keep my stock pump and do the same as alternator
I have not tested that combination to know for sure, but the alternator from the 94 suburban was easy to wire up. I think it was only two wires. Good luck!
Hey! Thanks for watching. I was having issues with my V-belts flying off at high rpm so the biggest benefit is the belt stays on lol. I also really liked that the stock alternator for this setup is 105 amp compared to the 65 amp I originally had. I chose this setup because it bolts to the block instead of just bolting to the head because I have the old style heads with only one bolt hole in the passenger side. The only downside was that the brackets are so tall. I would guess it is not going to be an issue if you are putting it in a truck. The only modification was making hood clearance. Obviously there will need to be some changes to the wiring as well. I like to over engineer things a little bit so I ran a 4 gauge wire to the battery post on the alternator.
Hi Pushrod. I'd love some input on my 88 chevy 350. It has a serpentine belt system, but the brackets are the old steel pieces with braces everywhere. I removed some of the braces when I rebuilt the engine. It worked for a while, but now the the belt is riding off the pulleys. No doubt its because of the missing braces. I have always wanted to swap out to the aluminum set up , like in this video. I heard I should look at a 95 truck. I'm worried something wont line up. The set up I have was only used a few years. Do you know if a 94 suburan is the way I should go?
Brian Sansone does your passenger head have one or three bolt holes? If it has 3 you can use the brackets from a newer vortec. I believe they came in 95-99 model years and have the alternator on the passenger side. I think they might not be as tall, but I’m not sure on that. Otherwise the older style , I believe 90-94, are what I show in this video and I like them a lot. I believe there are additional braces that can be used, but I am fine without them. This is on my drift car so they regularly see 6,000 rpm with no issues
