Mine popped out for a few years, never got it fixed and I was able to rehab it myself by working out with weights. It hasn't popped out for about 20 years now so don't give up brother!!
Hey Garrett, I don't know if you remember me, but I was your neighbor when you and Ian were kids in Waialua. You guys would help me work on Porsches once in a while, because with your small hands you could reach places that I couldn't. I have been keeping an eye on you guys over the decades. I'm glad to see you are still riding waves. Keep it up! At seventy- one years old I'm still hang gliding Makapuu, enjoying life and having as much fun as I can get away with. Hang gliding is a thousand times more fun than surfing. I have ridden Sunset as big as it can be ridden, without towing in, so I know what I'm talking about. When you get home you should try it's sister sport Paragliding! You can be flying high within a couple of months. Picture the most perfect wave that you can imagine, then imagine yourself riding that imagined perfect wave, ALL DAY long if you wanted. That's a REALITY for hang glider and paraglider pilots. Check out my you tube channel kenboyd0. The videos are very amateurish, but you can see some of the things I've doing these past years. Have fun and don't hurt anybody. Hi to mother Malia.
@@lesleygonzalez8784 That's a ton of mass underneath coming at high speed. It's more like hitting concrete than falling into still water. These big wave riders have huge cajones.
I've seen this wipe out on other video compilations but I wasn't sure who it was. Interesting to hear what the ramifications were and makes me wonder how many other wipe outs you see in a flash turn out to be months on the couch for the unlucky guy or girl. Big ups to anyone who paddles into a wave like that.
Seen days like that... when the tide is right and the wind blowing offshore...you can't make the drop, and you can't get away. I've been bounced off of coral reefs, and held under till I started to black out.... Good times....
Steve DeCourier I don’t know about that I dislocated my shoulder when I was 10 or so and have not noticed anything different from my Right shoulder for the last 30 or so years.
It can be very different. Depends on how bad glenoid rim is damaged and if there was a head of the humerus fracture. I've had dislocation with fracture half a year ago. Thankfully no surgery needed. The shoulder is in full range of motion now, but is still not a in a full strength yet. Hope Garrett will recover fast.
Do your PT religiously, gradually work up strength after the all clear... I dislocated my left shoulder last September, and I get more strain paddling in my right shoulder now than I do my left! Not trying Mavericks anytime soon though...
dislocation or seperation? the first one you just pop back in but the second one (acromioclavicular joint separation) sucks and is common on shoulder impacts like this... I imagine wiping out coming down a steep face like that, at that speed, is like hitting the pavement coming of a motorcycle.
That's like running full speed out of the upper deck of a stadium or arena and hurling yourself down the stairs all the way to the street. Then a swimming pool is dumped on you.
Garrett... You're an animal. I don't know how you survive these wipeouts, but you must be a viking warrior. Mavericks is a very strange wave with that bottom topography, which makes the wave undulate up and down and rapidly change over and over like a massive bucking bronco that refuses to be ridden. Bra! You are a legend!
Sometimes, you see things and think I could do that one day with training, etc. Not this. Nope. Actually pretty horrific to watch. Glad he's OK. GMAC charges hard.
Every time I see a major wipe out like this I think about what Gregg Noll's Mom told a TV reporter when he asked her if she was worried about Gregg wiping out when he surfed the big waves at Wiamea . She shook her head and said "No, it's just water."
Precisely my thoughts also. Reminded me of Shaun Thompson's "pink banana". Mind you, he won the pipe masters with it in the 70's. But yeah, too much rocker!
Did the floatation vest allow him to not penetrate the wave as well or was it just the speed of the fall? He really skipped more than most wipeouts I’ve seen
There was a similar big wave wipeout in Hawaii recently where the surfer hit the water head first and ended up drowning, possibly because he burst his eardrum and couldn't find the water surface. The last thing anyone saw of him was his feet sticking out of the water.
There was no doubt in my mind when I broke my clavicle after falling on a rock. Just tapping it hard hurts. Could not imagine having a mountain of water crash on to me afterwards and maybe drowning.
To only have a dislocated shoulder after a liquid ton drops on you AFTER you hit water at over 30 mph.... Very lucky. On a side note, He's straight nuts.
Waves 9ft which is like 3.48 metres make me almost puke then strength of the wave is unbelievable but this. this is so overwhelming in strength and height
Thats not as bad as a 10 ft wipeout without the jetskis waiting . Extreme =no safety net which is most of the time for most surfers that have a crack at bigger waves
To Rod S. and others like him: If nobody dared anything, we would all be sitting in the sofa getting more obese... If you want to surd hard, accidents will happen. It's all up to the individual risktaker - and not up to you, amigo!
This rivals Cotton's Naza nightmare as the worst nonfatal wipeout ever. Only a handful of people on the planet could even survive that kind of beating. Even being the HEMEN both G-Mac and AC are they were both lucky. This is the EDGE of what is possible. RESPECT! PEACE!
You can get a little better perspective on the speed and power of these waves. Especially between the first and second impact. I immediately thought of MF. Big Reward = Big Risk.
Dude is over 50 years old. Your body can't handle the punishment like it could in your 20's. Bones get brittle and muscle and tendons weaken. I'm not saying "hang up the board" but maybe not take such risks now that you've already cemented your place in the big wave hall of fame.
haha the classic guy who thinks he is a doctor and once you know him longer it turns out he thinks he's an attorney, pilot, a marine biologist and a graphic designer and pro hockey player too lol those kind of guys are so annoying and stupid
He underestimated the power of Mavericks because he was surfing what he thought was the biggest most treacherous waves in Spain. He was wrong. I'm happy to see Garret was ok. He is a great surfer by anyone's standard's.
I've never been surfing (I live in Kansas) and am overweight but I think if I had been on this wave I would have adjusted my balance (strategically) so I wouldn't have fallen off. I'm thinking the speed is such that falling off can hurt you, and, because water is involved, there is a (small) chance of drowning.
If you have never been surfing, you would definitely fall on a 25 foot wave at mavericks and you would certainly drown. If you're not familiar with the ocean, you don't understand the power it really packs until you get out there. People drown in 5-6 foot waves. This is next level my friend.
Analogy: Mike tyson left hook, Mike Tyson Uppercut, then ran over by a herd of elephants. Most people would bite your hand off for only a dislocated shoulder after that.
Gimme a Break! I show my Daughter how not to Ollie in my Driveway tearing my Rotator Cuff off and landing on an upturned brick that just happened to be there heavily bruising my Liver an i'm out for over a year already. Next time to show her that Dads still a Shredder i'll head on over to Mav's when its maxing out? Great post Surfline, Macca is a Maniac.
I should have gotten the shoulder surgery a long time ago. Now my arm is constantly popping out. Good-luck with the rehab process Garret!
Mine popped out for a few years, never got it fixed and I was able to rehab it myself by working out with weights. It hasn't popped out for about 20 years now so don't give up brother!!
The first wipe out was horrific. Surfers have died in less dangerous wipe outs.

Hi to mother Malia.
let’s hope he finds this
I paddled out to Mavericks that day, surfed the bigger wave behind Gmac's..............Then I woke up!
Rod Templar lololololollllooooolllllll
Haha 🤣 lol 😂
You mean you woke up from a nightmare. ;)
That was epic... GMAC's new nickname should be "Skip."
Last name: Stone
Chief Mongo storm
Dislocations are horrible, you don’t even feel the moment it happens..... it’s when you surface that the pain suddenly hits you....
I can't believe how far he bounced after the initial impact! The water looked hard like concrete!
It is like the air when it moves very fast, it can make you bounce and even fly
he didn't penetrate like at ALLL
@@lesleygonzalez8784 That's a ton of mass underneath coming at high speed. It's more like hitting concrete than falling into still water. These big wave riders have huge cajones.
Having a 20 foot plus 1000's of tons of water flatten you like concrete and only hurt shoulder, Bless him.
lol 20 foot? This is easily a 40 footer
@@UnrealEngineTutorials closer to 20, but Mavericks is a heavy wave so no matter what size it's terrifying
Am I the only one who doesn't want to hear all this setup dialogue? Just roll the fucking carnage 😂
Keep dropping in, bro. You are a legend.
Have a nice and fast recovery GMAC. Greetings from Portugal.
hey confident doctor who never went to med school, do you wanna tell me my fortune too? lol

FIrst Guy: "No it's definitely not dislocated"
Narration: Garrett's shoulder was dislocated
That's not what he said at all.
We're praying for a fast recovery from Yosemite too!
Oops, I meant this to post above, getting old sucks.
Edgecrusher
What the fuck is wrong with you? Lmao
Go get laid you fucking weirdo
There's no such thing as a 100% recovery after a dislocated shoulder.
Steve DeCourier I don’t know about that I dislocated my shoulder when I was 10 or so and have not noticed anything different from my Right shoulder for the last 30 or so years.
you were a kid
It can be very different. Depends on how bad glenoid rim is damaged and if there was a head of the humerus fracture.

Correct. I can personally attest to that.

Non-stop spin cycle.
About 500 olympic size swimming pools at velocity of a pressure washer
how long are they underwater during a wipeout

Just curious? Is that ambulance ride covered by insurance? Many plans only cover a portion of the ride or none at all.
Every time I see a major wipe out like this I think about what Gregg Noll's Mom told a TV reporter when he asked her if she was worried about Gregg wiping out when he surfed the big waves at Wiamea . She shook her head and said "No, it's just water."
Mac is almost fearless. Stays in top shape always and can take poundings better than most. That was a nasty one.
No youngster..What a Braveheart.
That board has a lot of rocker and it looks like it slows the board when he dropped in. Get well and try again.
great observation -the nose rocker catches the wind coming up the wave face and can hold you up on the drop...
Or maybe just smoke a little opium instead? Much more likely to survive.
The flotation vests only provide a tiny bit of buoyancy without pulling the cartridges. The distance of the skip was pure velocity.
Kinda like standing on a diving board, on top of a high dive platform, while its speeding down the freeway.
Ahahahahahaha

Heavy.Greetings from Vero Beach Florida.
I've had that exact same wipeout many times but only on three footers.
Did a safety vest make him skim the water first tearing his shoulder before getting plowed under?
oh my, that was hard to watch, so glad he is okay, wow
I've not seen this wipeout before. That was heavy heavy heavy. Tough man.
what was his mistakes please reply
To only have a dislocated shoulder after a liquid ton drops on you AFTER you hit water at over 30 mph.... Very lucky.
On a side note, He's straight nuts.
He lived? Amazing!
How was the board?
G Mac is the Lord of Wipeouts. I think I've heard him more talk about how he ate shit than the waves he caught. Respect.
wOw he was lucky....I have titanium plate and 4 X 14mm screws in my spine from my surfing accident.
Waves 9ft which is like 3.48 metres make me almost puke then strength of the wave is unbelievable but this. this is so overwhelming in strength and height
It's also so damned fast. I can't believe he paddled into it.
and who says waves cant play "skipping stones" i count 3 skips.
Shit Hahahaha, hardcore
that wave owned him. no chance....he should have pulled up.
speedy recovery
GMAC blamed himself, saying he didn't stay low. NOPE. Not his fault in the slightest. Watch the lip- just bad luck.
Dave Smith no luck involved there that should have been a tow in or he shouldn't have gone for it.
Just a tad late and no backing out past a certain instant in time...Mave's will grab you and THROW you...out and away...then bury you..
