As a kid, my hair looked like I frequently sat inside of faraday cages, so spiked everywhere with no cooperation. Later, it just grew out fast and still stayed uncooperative in some spots, and it's still like that today, only now I use hair gel and a trick that a barber taught me on vacation: apply hair gel, style hair, wait for hair gel to dry, then comb hair again and BOOM! Soft hair that mostly cooperates.
They scan and look through your carry-on luggage. They'll only look through your checked luggage if you're coming from someplace like Hawaii or out of the country for an ag inspection. Your carry-on is what goes with you on the plane, your checked bag is what goes in the cargo hold (suitcase).
