    So, I just did some preliminary research into the Extended Universe of "Star Wars," and I feel like I should apologize for my comment earlier. I stated that because it bore the "Legends" branding that it should be non-canon, but upon looking up my research, I discovered that this WAS canon before 2014. There was an organized, cohesive effort to make sure the novels, games, comics, shows, and RPGs all connected without contradicting the overall story. That is not only immensely cool, but it's exactly what I like about shared universes. So to everyone who I talked to, I'm sorry. This is a canon storyline in my mind now. I'm definitely picking this up!

    So excited about the Legends Omnibus line, really giving some of these stories their oversized due! I won't replace my Epics but this makes it easier to get some of the OOP stuff easier.

  • @albernardi8

    Coming from a hardcore SW Legends fan, I’m a bit divided on this omni.
    The placement of some stories is a bit questionable (as was their placement in the Epics), the lack of Podracing Tales is a big missed opportunity, and the stories contained are VERY hit and miss. That said that first Epic is absurdly expensive, and this is a nice omnibus hardcover so there are definitely good reasons to get it.
    I know I’m going to get it, it’s inevitable that I slowly replace all my DH trades/Epic Collections with the omnis as they come out. But should casual fans pick this up? The best stories in here are the Darth Maul mini and the two Villie SW Tales shorts. That’s like 120 pages out of 1000.
    I’ll say this: if you love Episode I, you’re gonna go nuts for this. If you like the Darth Plagueis novel, you’ll love this. In fact it’s almost required reading for Plagueis if you want all the references. If you love Darth Maul, you’ll probably get a kick out of it. Failing all of that, no I don’t think you’ll like it. Despite the spattering of random comics, this omni is actually very niche. I’d say if you’re a casual fan, pick up the Old Republic omnibus or wait for The Menace Revealed omni.
    Edit: I should say two more things. If the stories inside interest you by all means get it. There are some really good comics in here, but there’s also some lame stuff. I’d say if you haven’t read any of the comics included, wait for a discount and keep expectations middling. The second thing is despite everything I just said, I’m very excited for this book and am so happy Marvel is rolling out these omnis and keeping Legends comics in print.

      I got excited about this, but Darth Maul is pretty much the main thing I like about Episode I, and I'm definitely not one of those people who thinks the Prequels are good now. I'll probably end up skipping this one to make more room for other Omnis, so thanks for the report.

      What was wrong about the placement in the Epics?
      The only thing I can think of is not mingling the Episode I with the Episode I Adventures, but that might screw the flow, so I'm fine with them one after the other.

    So, a friend of mine is related to Tony Millionaire, who wrote the George R. Binks story. My friend said that the name started as a joke when Tony heard an old man outside of the theater say to his grandson: "George R. Binks?! What kind of name is that for a space freak?!" Just thought you might like to know, lol.
    Also, I don't think he ever intended it to be actual canon, not that it matters now that it officially isn't.

    Yes Jan Duursema is still doing comics. She did a Marvel 108 - that special edition Star Wars tying into the original '80s line. She's done other stuff too. She also did a kickstarter for a story called Hexer Dusk. It was really good.
    My fav series of the Dark Horse are Tales of the Jedi, Knights of the Old Republic and the Clone Wars stuff. That book in general does not seem to have the best stories in general. I have most of the original comics or graphic novels. Probably won't get these expensive omnibus books. They look gorgeous but besides being pricey (some of us just don't have it) they don't look like I can curl up and read it easy due to the bulk.

    The Epic Collections had a way better mapping, IMO.
    And yeah, the comics get better during the prequel era, despite the rough start. When you reach the Clone Wars it is so good that you look at the CGI tv show and ask what sort of crap is that.
    As for Duursema, she draws a good chunk of the Clone Wars era comics and all of the first Legacy era comics, and it is very good.

    I actually have some ideas for two Star Wars Legends Omnis that collect Clone Wars era comics from Dark Horse
    Volume 1 contains: STAR WARS: REPUBLIC 49-67; STAR WARS: JEDI - MACE WINDU, SHAAK TI, AAYLA SECURA, COUNT DOOKU, YODA, STAR WARS: DARTH MAUL - DEATH SENTENCE 1-4, MATERIAL FROM STAR WARS TALES 14(Tides of Terror), 19(Rather Darkness Visible), 22(Honor Bound), STAR WARS: VISIONARIES(Artist of Naboo).
    Volume 2 contains: STAR WARS: REPUBLIC 68-77 and 81-83; Star Wars: General Grievous 1-4; Free Comic Book Day 2006: Star Wars; Star Wars: Obsession (2004) 1-5; Free Comic Book Day 2005: Star Wars #1; Star Wars: Darth Maul - Son of Dathomir #1-4; Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith #1-4; Star Wars: Tag & Bink II #2; Material from Star Wars Visionaries(Eyes of Revolution, Deep Forest, Wat Tambor, Sithisis); Material Star Wars Tales 4 and 17(Dark Journey)

    My defense of Legends: Much of this was written before and during the release of the films. I agree a lot in this Omni will be from poor to bad. Prior to this, they were writing their own stuff with Lucas's blessing. Tales of the Jedi, including the origins of the Jedi and Sith, is phenomenal. The X-wing stories are good. Mara Jade is the hill I die on. The writers ( who many were fans) at this time were searching for footing with George Lucas and his blessing because the films were rewriting the lore that they had. That took work to rework the story. By the time the Clone Wars comics comes out after Attack of the Clones, they knew what to do. Dark Horse Clone Wars was better than the cartoon for a while until Filoni got a good handle on his story. Then comes Legacy which is the cream of the crop and better than anything that Disney has produced.

    • @albernardi8
      @albernardi8 2 года назад +2

      I agree completely. Honestly, while I don’t by any means hate the new stuff, it really can’t hold a candle to Tales of the Jedi or many of the Legends novels. That’s top of the line material right there.
      I wish Marvel put out a collection like that Boba Fett: Blood Ties trade from a couple months back for the Darth Maul content of this omni. I’m afraid people will pick this up, then get turned off to the EU because it’s just a random collection of pre-TPM comics. Don’t get me wrong, this book is going in my collection, but I worry about getting more people interested in Legends. I think a Menace Revealed or Clone Wars omnibus would have really put our best foot forward, but either way I’m glad they’re at least keeping this material in print.

    • @georgefeliu2383
      @georgefeliu2383 2 года назад

      @@albernardi8 I think this volume will sell, but it will hurt the sales of future volumes as to say "See the Legends stuff isn't that good." The first volume after the original years should have either been Tales of the Jedi or the Clone Wars. but it would have competed with the new stuff (I refer to the HIgh Republic the Star Trek wannabe.).

    I’m a huge Star Wars fan. But this is a pass for me. I’m glad they moved that odd Ki-Adi story here so it will not be in a future Republic omnibus. One of the worst collection of odd stories that (for the most part) were retconned immediately. George did not share any of the script for Episode I with the writers. That’s how we ended up with a married Ki-Adi because the writers didn’t know what the Jedi were about at that time (before the Prequels came out). There are so many other better Dark Horse stories. What gets me excited about this omnibus though is that I now have hope that we’re getting a SW Republic by Ostrander omnibus the future.

      @@forsakenV12 There are many great ones depending on what era you’re most interested in. The Old Republic omnie is great, but disconnected from the movies (~4.000 BBY). I really enjoyed Vader by Soule, Doctor Aphra, Vader by Gillen, and SW by Aaron. I have most stories in tpbs but the omnies are mapped very well. I wish they’d make a Poe Dameron omnibus, that’s probably the best series from the Sequels era. When it comes to Legends I have a feeling the best is yet to be released (other than Old Republic that’s out already). That was previously released in softcover long OOP. So glad Marvel starts picking up Dark Horse stories and releasing them. I see what they’re doing here though. They start chronologically along the movies. It just happened to be a time (pre-‘99/‘00) where those stories weren’t good IMO.

      To be fair, "Legends" is just as respectful a term as "Expanded Universe." This way, there's no battle for what's canon and what's not (as I'm sure there was with the Expanded Universe material). And also, Disney/Lucasfilm's stories go beyond the sequels and the cartoons. "The Clone Wars," "The Mandalorian," "The Book of Boba Fett," and the current Marvel Comics are all canon now.

      Disney didn’t create the clone wars and I like those other shows but for me, anything heavily connected to the sequels or set after ROTJ is non canon. No matter how good it is.
      Luke’s New Jedi Order is the best part of Star Wars and they ruined it for no reason. EU is the true sequels.

      @@stephen8805 So, that's a bit of a backwards mindset. If you like it, but it's set after a certain time period, it's non-canon? That's like if I said I considered all Spider-Man stories after "One More Day" to be non-canon; it's years of content just discredited because of the inciting event. That's incredibly insulting to the creators and people working on the material.

    If Doctor Aphra is the kind of junk you can expect from Marvel Star Wars then I have no interest in it unfortunately.

      I loved it. The murder bots are the best bots in the Star Wars universe…. Well maybe not as cool as the Droids versions of R2 and 3PO. But honestly I dug the character, It was like reading Indiana Jones. Before it got crystal skulked.

      @@NearMintCondition from what I read it just didn't feel like it fit in Star Wars and was super silly. A evil version of R2, 3PO and Chewie? Come on. Plus she completely overstayed her welcome. Clone Wars could do a homage to a Kaiju movie for example, but that didn't stick around for several seasons and get a solo show.
