- EA Sports WRC reviewed by Luke Reilly on Xbox Series X. Also available on PlayStation 5 and PC.
"EA Sports WRC takes the class-leading feel of 2019’s Dirt Rally 2.0 and stuffs it into an officially licensed World Rally Championship experience, like a steel rod in Timo Rautiainen’s backside. Loose surface handling remains supreme, stages have been pumped up to 30 kilometre marathons, the audio is excellent, and the selection of modern and historical rally cars is achingly close to spot-on. However, just like a steel rod into your co-driver’s buttocks, there have also been some unwelcome, performance-related side effects and some serious lost position in the graphics race with the competition. Stuttering and tearing are common while racing on Xbox Series X, and the fidelity here falls well short of being a generational leap from Dirt Rally 2.0. With these technical shortfalls, combined with a lukewarm career mode and underdone customisation, EA Sports WRC feels like a great racing game trying to fight its way out of an unfinished one."

Ranting about the game when in reality the problem is the skill issue of the player lol. EA WRC is a sim racing not arcade driving. WRC partnered with EA to make it their official training sim. To be used in real-life training for WRC drivers. It's really hard to play when you're used to arcade style racing games.

You guys are all crazy. This game looks amazing. Luke's criticism of the car not getting dirty is factually incorrect. Drive through full length Mexico, the car will be covered in dirt at the end of the rally.

The stuttering must be a Unreal thing. Robocop has the same thing at times. And it totally loses it during massive gunfights.
they apparently haven't done pso shader precompiling. It is an unreal thing as in it's not documented properly and a pain to fix, but at this point, everyone and their mother knows about this issue and should have handled it in their unreal project properly
It works fine in ACC.
It's in practically all PC unreal games. This must be a serious low-level problem with the engine as it isn't getting fixed.

Yes but many sounds are from dr 2.0 i saw that they recorded for example the xsara wrc but in the game It sounds exactly like the C4 in dr2.0

Stuttering is a feature of Unreal Engine by now.
As are blurry graphics and horrible performance.

An engine is still only an engine at the end of the day. It's up to the developers what they do with it and how they can utilize it.

@@IwinMahWay Agree, shaders pre-compilation is absolutely necessary. I'd rather wait an extra minute for the stages to load to prevent this performance issue at runtime.

This guy, Luke Reilly is better than most IGN reviewers. Also he knows this genre, he is a racing and sim enthusiast. IGN often uses completely wrong person for a review, someone who has no experience or interest in the genre in question. Or just overall lazy and bad reviewers

Did we judge Kiloton and Nacon too harshly perhaps? The only thing that EA WRC has done really well so far is the marketing and presentation; they've managed to promote the game using the real WRC drivers, as well as using the official WRC narrator in the game. That's great and all, but other than that the game feels somewhat rushed and unfinished.
Not at all, apart from low resolution & frame rate issues in few places, game is amazing overall
No we didn’t Judge KT or Nacon too harshly. EA and Codemasters just took the series to a new low. Not acceptable. Did the original codies all leave?
Absolutely not, those games were completely half-baked content wise, handled woefully, looked even worse and changed very little between each rendition. This is a very big step back to the right direction, but it needs a lot of work to be perfect

WRC Generations is a lot worse than this. Jesus Christ. This game doesn't have fundamental issues like that game had. This one just needs some optimizing.
Looking forward to eventually picking this up!! Rally games have long been among my favorite racing games!
Just buy Dirt 2.0. Save your cash.

Exactly, it does say it was reviewed on Xbox, but why ignore the PC version.
Why not mention in the review that the PC game is a much better looking and smoother experience? Since most of the reasons why this was given a 6/10 appears to be due to console issues.

What a spot on review absolutely nailed it Dirt Rally 2.0 is miles better than this unfinished game, can’t believe they used unreal 4 Ego is far superior in every way.

I've played it, and honestly I'd rather play WRC with the stutters than DR2.0
It has wayyy better and more stages and the driving physics is the sweetspot between sim and simcade

Great review, spot on. It is a letdown, everyone was expecting better from Codemasters giving they had plenty of time to develop this game. A stepdown from Dirt 2.0 in many ways.
My thoughts exactly.
Everything keeping this game from being great can and most likely will easily be fixed with patches, code Masters has long history of supporting and updating their games such as with the other dirt titles, dirt 2.0 needed a lot of updates before it got where it's at now.
You can’t patch graphics. All the assets are old and dated. You need an entirely new game.
The WRC games almost never get fixed, EA acts like its not worth their time.
unfortunately, the jittering performance issue is Unreal's signature.

As a VR-only simracer (especially for rally stuff), the performance of ACC in VR was enough of a concern for the Unreal engine swap.. The fact that VR hasn't released yet and even 2D mode is having major performance issues is so disappointing. EA doesn't have a track record of fixing this stuff post-launch so they're not gonna get the benefit of the doubt. I'll wait out those updates / discounts before jumping into this one.

It's totally normal now for games to just release unfinished and be finished a year later. Almost every big publisher game. It's kind of like they design to do that.
Oh yes, it's very intentional and will only get worse if accepted by the consumer.
It is included in game development life cycle.. beta release then fix it from users feedback.

Back to WRC generations for me
The rain looks awful. Overall, the graphics in dirt rally 2 seemed better. The terrain looked better, lighting looked better, texture work was crisper, etc. And the performance was better too...

Talking about steering wheels, the tarmac physics absolutely changed for the better compared to DR2.0. Haven't tried them on controller

What I'd give to have EA WRC's handling, force feedback and engine sounds in WRC Generations' stages and gameplay...
That’s what we were supposed to have.
Though EA's stages are better than Generations (most are modelled off the real roads), and the driving physics is pretty much the gameplay. Just take away the stutters and bamb 10/10 IGN
Minus the tarmacs twitchyness.
Including the amazing camera angle options you can choose from in WRC Generations.

People were way too harsh on WRC 10 and Generations
After having played EA WRC, WRCG is lightyears ahead and not just because it's a more stable experience but the driving and vehicle physics are top-notch. In recent years, only SLRE and WRCG/10 have actually delivered anywhere near a believable rally experience.
The new EA game just felt like Dirt4's toy-car physics with some forced loss of traction every now and then. So artificial and unintuitive.
Shame that KT never acknowledged or seriously attempted to fix some of the bugs pertaining to throttle output curve etc because if they had ironed out those bugs, the game would have gone down in history as one of the very best in the genre

Played a couple hours, didn't seem to have stuttering, happy with it so far. I'm already missing the daily/weekly/monthy challenges from Dirt Rally 2.0 though

Performance has been fixed with the new update but after playing it since release I’ve learned that the physics are not that fun
It's interesting that while he was talking about how controllers feel on tarmac, he shows a clip of him spinning out on tarmac at 8:03. The car did not loop out because of the twitchy controller handling on tarmac, it looped because of the severe lift off oversteer that's in this game. I've never seen any racing game with this severe of lift off oversteer.
Try wheel friction 40 and tire friction 40.

"Ruined" c'mon don't be such a drama queen. This game is really fun to drive with a proper wheel and has tons of content. It's just released too early like many others nowadays and needs to be patched.

Absolute agree! The step to Unreal Engine (it isn’t even UE5) is a big mistake ór they shouldn’t released it in this state!! Big letdown for me as a rally fan!

Probably not, the integrity of companies are declining.
I've played Dirt Rally 1 and 2.0 extensively, and can say that once WRC's performance is address, it's head and shoulders better than 2.0
- Driving feel
- Tarmac physics
- Heaps of rally stages
- WRC cars
- Career mode
@@ark14700 most those rally stages are boring endless roads . There is just no character in this game . Some of the tracks just have no life to them , no people at the sides etc . I’m sorry but it’s lacking more than performance issues
@@ark14700 You forgot to mention improved graphics, livery editor rework, track degradation, and stage enhancement. And better co driver voices. That lady irish accent is so unfitting.
Is it psvr2 compatible?
Shader compilation stutter will always be there, even with the best hardware. It seems to be inherent with unreal engine.
This must be fixed!
They should get rid of the car maker and the livery editor and give us a pacenote editor!
EA SPORTS WRC is basically the 150th game destroyed by EA's greediness.
those roads seem way to narrow for the car's size, like the dimension ratio got buggy and either the road shrunk or the car grew.

WRC Generations is way better, get that one. Better tracks, better career, better graphics, and better performance. Or continue to play Dirt Rally 2, this game is a giant turd. It's really bad.
Oh well, so long, Codemasters. When this underperforms in sales, EA, being EA, will probably shutter them. For me, the biggest surprise is that EA didn't mandate the use of the Frostbite engine...

It’s feeling as though there is a real lack of care and pride with a lot of recent game releases.
It's a marketing trick they pump up the patches slowly and sales go up.

Wow...I play on an older PC where I've had some performance issues as well but it looks like us PC players got off easy. Those graphics look like just about the lowest setting available in the game, which even my old PC doesn't need to resort to.
It’s 4k on console.
2023 and these companies still releasing sub par quality games. Shame on EA for these performance issues.

Why are you comparing this game to dr2 whilst there have been wrc games every year?
Because this is not a sequel to WRC games but to Dirt games - this is a Codemasters game
He compared it to both, but the Team making this year WRC is the one that made Dirt Rally 2 so its more of a Dirt 3 than WRC 23
It doesn't matter with which you compare it, it looks worse than both
DR2 is the gold standard.
Would not change anything, WRC Generations is still better then EA WRC.
