My Paddle Board Blew UP!!

  • Can an inflatable paddle board blow up on a hot beach?
We're in British Columbia on the shores of Kootenay Lake during the infamous heat dome of 2021. It's hot, hot, hot.
In this video we attempt to answer that question by leaving a couple Hala paddle boards in the sun during the dangerously hot "heat dome" of 2021. We're in British Columbia on the shores of Kootenay Lake. It's hot, hot, hot.
Using the Hala Carbon Straight Up and Hala Hoss inflated to the recommended pressure of 15psi, we will leave the boards to back on the beach all day as temperatures sore above 50 degrees Celsius on the sand (over 120F).
    What will happen?
As suspected, the slow rise of temperature during the does affect the pressure inside the board but not by much . In fact, it's only about 1psi. Within the first hour the boards went from 15psi to about 16psi. That's not enough to rupture a Hala board.
(Check out Hala paddle boards here: halagear.com/?...

However, the pressure does drop fairly quickly when you put warm boards on cold water. The dramatic change in temperature lowers the pressure more than 2psi in only a few minutes.
Keep that in mind when paddling cold rivers and lakes. It's not a bad idea to inflate your board a little more than 15psi in anticipation of the drop in pressure.
YES, boards can blow up when left in the hot sun, on a beach, in storage, transporting over alpine passes. I have witnessed it first at events where people overinflate their boards or are using cheaply made gear.
Hala paddle boards are built well with industry leading standards. The PVC is bomber. The factory welded seems are solid. And the woven drop stitching holding everything together is unparalleled. These allow for the boards to be as rigid as necessary at 15psi.
Other boards that require you to inflate to 18psi or 22psi just to start can come dangerously close to rupture with an increase in pressure. And cheaper boards with cheap material are already a couple of steps closer to the landfill before you even start inflating.
This makes Hala one of the best brand of boards to adventure with. Take them on whitewater, take them on expeditions, take them to the beach. You are good.
However, keep in mind that UV is the ultimate killer. Keeping your gear in the shade will help prevent premature aging. That goes for your boards, and especially for you paddles. NEVER leave your carbon or fiberglass paddles in direct sun. Period.
    Thanks for watching!

    Hi
I bought my wife a bodyglove paddle board from Costco in august of 2021 do to personal injuries, were unable to use it until this year the board was used one time at the end of July and the second time inflated on August 3 at about 9:30 AM. The temperature was not quite 90°. The board was in direct sunlight, but had another board covering about 80% of it at about 11:30 AM. The paddleboard exploded leaving about a 13 inch rip at the scene where it exploded the board had not been damaged before the failure. Fortunately, Costco took the board back, believe me when I tell you that the explosion was loud and blue curtains off of the wall. Scaring the hell out of all of us. Lol thanks for letting me share this.

Do you know what the recommended psi for the board was? And to what psi did you inflate?

The fact that you had to use a clickbait title gets a downvote from me. Also, learn how to pronounce woven…

Did you know that there is a formula? PV=nRT. V, n and R are constant. If you make computation, you'll see that around 20 degres Celcius, you need 15 degrees C more to gain 1 PSI. But it goes the other way, like you say in the video it can be an issue: in spring, where typically you'll have big difference between air and water: inflate your paddle at 30degrees C, put it in 5 degrees C water and pressure will drop about 2 PSI.

I thought the water is like a mirror that amplifies the sun ,people get sunburn on beach, radio waves bounce off of water . A premium board should have a pressure valve as some rafts and other inflateables do.

Hi Paul, I've had and loved my two Hala boards for five years now. I've taken great care of them. I took them to the lake the weekend before the heat wave (I live in Seattle) and both of my boards blew a seam. The first was blown up to 15 psi and had been sitting in the sun for 10 minutes while I finished blowing up the other board. That second board blew a seam when it got to 11 psi. Both blew the top seam on the tail of the board. It's so frustrating to lose both boards, just out of warranty, to the same fail. Any suggestions?

Hi Anna - reach out to warranty@halagear.com. We're sorry that they failed you. Since they both went at the same time, it could be that they were stored in an environment that deteriorated them (like a shed with gasoline fumes), or it could just be bizarre bad luck... While no board will last forever, our 2021WELDED boards will last a reaaaaly long time. Boards can be repaired if they are evaluated to be repairable and, if not, we can help you get an out-of-warranty replacement.

Great content! I'm new to SUP Boarding, but recently bought a Hala Rado in large part based on your channel and quality of product. So far, I'm quite pleased with it. What's your top advice for people wanting to transition from still water (lakes) to moving water (rivers)? What should I adjust in terms of mindset, paddle technique, gear? I'm not ready for whitewater, but will encounter some class 1-2 rapids on the Etowah and Chattahoochee Rivers in North Georgia. Thanks!!

Great questions, thanks for asking. I'll keep the answer short and to the point. I advise people all the time to be playful with your paddling. get out of the neutral position, run up and down the board, pivot, fall, recover, repeat. The more dynamic you are when paddling on a lake, the more comfortable you will be in turbulent water.
As far as being on the river, my few pointers are focused on gear. Dress like a kayaker and wear the SHIPPS uniform (shoes, helmet, insulation, PFD, padding, and a signaling device in the form of a whistle). ruclips.net/video/pEstEm8ooN8/видео.html
And if you wear a leash (I almost always wear a leash on the river), make sure it is a quick release system worn above the waist.

Did you measure the initial temp with the teib cap or just the electric pump? I'm curious if the two gauges are also calibrated the same.

Both the pump gauge and the Trib solar gauge read 15psi to begin.

Two of my Body Glove Performer 11 boards blew up in the side seam (6-8 inches) when left on the top of my car by 10 am. They were inflated to 13 psi while inside the house.

I’m brand new to paddle boarding, just inflated two of them we got for Christmas. The amount of exertion it takes to fill to 18 psi seems completely out of proportion. How is it that the needle does not move at all, (on either board using different pumps), as I add air to a rigid board ? I don’t think there’s any way that the actual pressure inside that board is 18 psi.

    • @SUPPAUL
      @SUPPAUL  2 года назад

It does take a fair bit of pumping to inflate a board. 15-18psi standard. The board should be rigid at that level. The gauge you are using may not be accurate. And pressure does change overtime within the board due to external temps and altitude changes, and the quality of the board. I do recommend an electric 12v pump that inflates the board automatically. Like the Hala Shark pump. A must for the isup paddler.
