BMW R1200GS Battery Drain Investigation

- My battery sometimes won't start the bike if it's been left for 2-3 days. So I tried to find out what might be the problem. Could it be the INNOVV K2 camera, the BikeTrac GPS tracker, or just a dodgy battery? Didn't really come to a clear conclusion :(

BINGO! Found ya. Thx for taking the time to video and post it. Merry Christmas! 🎄
Really pleased to hear if it may have been of some help. Thanks for taking the time to comment. Happy Christmas to you too 🙂
same problem an a 2014 gsa, thanks for your time, stay safe.
Sorry to hear you’re having issues too. I always carry a lithium jump starter pack these days. It’s saved by bacon on several occasions. Knowing that the bike won’t last longer than a few days helps as well. If leaving it longer, I’d pull a few fuses to eliminate the parasitic loads (except for any GPS tracker).
@@Greeves I'm getting madder in bother senses of the word as this issue goes on. I tell you this was the reason I bought a BMW, dependability. My last bike had the same problem, I'm so sick of diagnosing, test, and checking. I loose about 00.01 volts an hour. The alt will charge fine so I either have to put a tender on it or drive the bike every day. It's gut a piece of mind thing. BTW love the master switch, had one on my old bike, looks like I need to do it again. Thanks for listening and the great video.
Hello.
Sorry, I am Spanish and I don't understand English very well.
I think you, and me, and many users of the latest 1200GS models have the same problem. This problem was officially recognized by BMW when the warranty passed. This problem is a parasitic electrical consumption with the bike off by one of the control units of the bike.
The solution is to replace the control unit, worth about five hundred euros. There is a cheaper alternative. Fit a circuit breaker on the negative battery cable to easily cut off the power supply to the bike when it is left parked. It also acts as an anti-theft device.
I'm working on it now.
Thanks for your comment. I hadn’t heard that there’s known issue with these bikes but it would certainly explain the problem. The trouble with isolating the battery is that the BMW alarm won’t work and neither will my GPS tracker. Do you know which control unit is supposed to cause the problem?
I’ve learnt to live with the limited battery life & always carry a portable lithium jump start pack (though I haven’t needed to use it for over a year now). Good luck with yours 👍
@Greeves
Sorry, I don't know. There is a method to find out, but I didn't inquire because it wasn't in my preferences to spend that much money. Thanks.
@@Maicro. No problem , I appreciate you getting back anyway. Muchas gracias 😎
Thanks for sharing,
Think many people have this kind of issue, if you can pinpoint it, you will be helping a lot of people :-)
As for the problem, here my experiance.
Not sure how you know the age of the battery, they don't come with a activation date on them.
I like to buy them with the asid sepperatly, this way you know the age better, maybe the battery is way older than you think?
(a dry new battery will not age, only after activation with the acid).
I trouble shoot a fireblade 954, the yuasa battery did not have the cranking power to start the motorcycle after 1 year.
Owner had bought the year before a new battery himself, so he knew the age very well.
He had the battery on a trickle charger all winter time (about 4-6 months), after that same problem.
Even the charger/tester say the battery is good, it would hold charge, and make the dash work and feul pump when you turned the key, but it did not crank.
Because you cant believe a new battery that young is bad, you wont suspect it........
After a test with a other battery we buy a new one, and problem was fixed, he never used the charger again, and it is still working after 4 year.
I would not install your fully charged battery, leave it for a couple of days outside the motorcycle, and then try it, this way you test if the battery will hold charge at all.
And you eliminate the drain you are suspecting now.
Secondly I would disconnect all the aftermarket gadgets, looking at your testing they can be a bit unpredictable (and thats hard to trouble shoot).
On a side note:
Normally I do 8-10 years with battery's (boat, motorcycle, car,)
During the off season I allways pull the battery out of them, after 4 moths ore so I will charge them back up, and leave them for a other 4-6 months (completlly disconnected).
I store them in a nice place where it never get colder than 10 deg celsius.
As for my car, its a 2005 e47 and the battery is now 10 years old and working every day, only suspectid him ones, but turned out to be the dynomo, it was broken after 400k km :-)
I know many people love there trickel chargers, but I refuse to work with them.
The motor cycle I have is a BMW r1200GSA 2015, and I can leave the bike for a month and it will start without a issue, mind you I dont have any aftermarket electronics on it and no alarm.
Good luck hunting.
Kind regards
André
Thanks for this brilliant comment. I bought my battery retail in March 2019 but it could have been in the shop for some time. I'll take your advice on rechecking the battery after it's 'rested' for a few weeks & see how it holds up. I do use the bike all year round though, so there is no off-season for me (Covid-19 permitting). The only other point is the GPS tracker - I'd like this to be active even when the bike is at home, so removing the battery isn't ideal. Thanks again though, lots to think about :)

Hope you found the problem.
One thing I forget to say is, you can measure the voltage drop during starting.
This will give you a good indication if the battery is good.
I don;t know the value's (youtube knows ;-))
And with your nice multimeter, should not be a problem to log it.
Cheers
André
andré Kikkert Thanks again. I’ll give it a try and let you know how it goes.
@@andrekikkert2787 Hi. I tried a start test after leaving the charged battery resting for 24 hours - dropped to < 8V, so I reckon it's well past it's best :( ruclips.net/video/3MSKmVs_vkw/видео.html
I kinda have the same problem.
The bike will start no problem first time in the day or if left for say an hour or so but if I start it and then ride no more than 5-10 min and stop at the petrol station as an example on the way to wherever, when I try turning it on again it nearly drains the battery. And like I said if I leave it for 30 min / 1 hour it starts up no problem.
Interesting. That sounds like quite a different problem than I had. So something is draining the battery while you’re riding? Maybe an issue with the alternator / charging electronics. Probably worth getting the error code(s) read by someone who has a BMW compatible ODB system to plug into the diagnostic port.
Hi did you ever get this problem solved my 2019 has the same issue. I've seen it could be down to valve clearance!
Following the checks in the video, I do understand the battery drain issue better. If I’m leaving the bike for longer than a day or two I isolate the INNOVV camera from the bike using the switch I’ve installed. With the camera disconnected the battery holds up reasonably well but still flattens after a month or two. The electrics are definitely not influenced by valve clearances 🤔
There's a bunch of faulty "General Module Light" modules that seem to draw too much power and flattening any battery in 2-3 days.
@bdg88 Thanks for this. I hadn’t heard of this problem. I’ll investigate further….👍
@@Greeves I ordered a used one from eBay just to try it. But I have yet to figure out where on the bike thing thing is located haha.
@bdg88 If I find out I’ll let you know 🙂
This bike needs a computer reflash. It’s not going into a “sleep mode”. My 16 gas died after 2 or 3 days every time.
Thanks for this. I didn’t know that such a thing was possible. I need to get the rear suspension recalibrated too (since swapping the rear strut for a secondhand one), so maybe I can get them to sort out the battery issue at the same time.
why you whispering
So people can’t hear… shh 🤫
