I was thinking of soaking it in mouthwash recently cuz I’ve had them for like 3/4 years and didn’t wash the daily but it wasn’t a huge priority since I bite down in my sleep too much so the retainer is a bit cracked by the molars and I’ll have to replace sometime in 23

    Question:
    Is it possible that a Waterpik water flosser could damage the clear Essix retainer if you used it on it to try to remove any accumulated plaque?
    (I am referring to the Waterpik water flosser that has a tank, rather than the hand-held device, which has fewer settings).
    If you used it at a high jet setting, the pressure might it make it more vulnerable to potential fractures (e.g. make it more brittle permanently, although I don't really see how....I don't know)?
    OR- it wouldn't really damage the plastic because it is just water?
    Please let me know your opinion.
    Thank you 🙏

    I had braces for the second time because my bottom teeth shifted. Now I am finished with my braces and I got an Essix retainer on the bottom and on top I have a glued retainer. Since I started wearing my bottom Essix retainer I'm experiencing jaw, ear, and headache pain also I think I clench my teeth at night and I wake up with sensitive teeth and jaw pain. How can I resolve this problem should I ask my orthodontist for an upper retainer so I can't clench my teeth at night? Also, my orthodontist said to try to wear my retainer during the day, not at night to see if that would help. I never clenched my teeth before braces it's a habit I developed I think.

    • @PremierOrthodontics
      @PremierOrthodontics  3 года назад +3

      I would try the recommendation of your orthodontist first and were the retainer 6 hours a day during the day time and see how your jaw responds.
      If it doesn’t get better you can go back to the orthodontist and they can try something else and see if it relieves your symptoms.
      Good luck 👍

    • @PremierOrthodontics
      @PremierOrthodontics  3 года назад +106

      As long as you're using a soft toothbrush without toothpaste you shouldn't get any scratches. You're correct that using toothpaste or a hard brush can scratch a retainer.
      We definitely recommend using room temperature water, no ultra hot water.
      Your mouth is 98 degrees, so as long as your water is that temperature or cooler you should be good. Thanks for your comment!

    • @PremierOrthodontics
      @PremierOrthodontics  3 года назад +2

      Any type of tooth paste usually has some kind of gritty small particles in it. These tend to cause abrasion (scratches) over time.
      We recommend using soap - dish soap or hand soap. These will help clean the retainers and not have any gritty particles.
      Another good option is a product called Retainer Brite. It is a tablet that you put in a cup of water and soak your retainer in. You can find these tablets sold on Amazon.

      You should be fine to start wearing your retainers only at night. If you feel like your retainers are tight when you put them in you may want to wear them a bit more.
      Definitely try Retainer Brite, it should help!
