Selling gold is always an issue. You need to have a way to take gold out of the economy in order for it to maintain its value and limit inflation. Creating an auction house to legitimize these transactions is always better than it going under the table, especially if you can take some of it out of the economy during the transaction.
The problem is if selling gold is equivalent to directly generating more of an otherwise limited currency. This is what makes mobile games and microtransactions such a problem. The currency that matters the most is often time limited whether it is by dailies or achievements. Thus, being able to buy that currency is what results in power and imbalance compared to farmable gold which doesn't have a limitation on its generation. You can generate more gold by playing, but you can't generate the limited currency by playing. This also applies to currencies that are otherwise time gated for one reason or another.

The problem that I've always had with the selling of ships and whatnot is how difficult is it going to be to get one of these $500+ ships through gameplay? If it's too easy I cant imagine that it'll feel good for the people who dropped money on them.

I sincerely don't think they want RMT to be fixed. I don't think it's in their best interest.
