On February 8th 2001 @ 10:54am. I was in the elevator with coworkers in Seatac, Washington near Nisqually, Washington in the United States heading to an 11am meeting on the 7th floor. There was a 6.8 magnitude earthquake while we were in the elevator and it lasted for a minute. The power went out for a moment, the elevator stopped and we were stuck in there for 3 hours until the fire department & maintenance showed up and manually used a crank to lower the elevator down to the main floor and finally got us out!
By far, the most TERRIFYING thing that has ever happened to me. So much so, that it took me 12 YEARS to ever get back into an elevator again and the only reason I did, was because I injured my back, I was in so much pain and finally went to the hospital to seek care!.... I feel so bad for anyone caught up in a earthquake, especially those in confined spaces!...
What we all went through in that elevator during all that violent shaking & rolling, the sounds we heard coming from the elevator and the building as it shifted and strained, feeling the elevator drop a few times, and the smell of burning electricity, will forever be seared into my mind!.... 😔

You apparently have never been in a big earthquake. I've been in several and I can assure you that your average house can take a lot more than a 7.9 earthquake.
It's dependent on what materials the house is made of and the foundation. Places with a lot of earthquakes also tend to have buildings beter built to survive earthquakes.
If you have seen any houses that collapsed during an earthquake, then it was badly maintained, cheaply built, not up to code or had major problems long before the earthquake hit.

I seen deep well covers shooting 20 feet in the air. My neighbour at the time had a sinkhole behid my room window had and still has a huge sinkhole to this day lucky the house was built on stilts and not flat onto the ground we woulve collapsed. Thank god for caymans structural design after hurricane ivon destroyed the island the government came up with new structural designs being hurrican and earthquake proof. 7.7 and not one death. Because our building designs are so good on the island. Thank God it was definitely the most scary experience i ever been through and i held my daughter so tight and my nephew as well.

"Normal' is too vague. This is life saving research we are talking about. The world is getting dumbed down big time. Let's not help. This was a very deep quake. Do we really know what is ''normal'' fault lines that deep? Excuse me if I am wrong. Thank you for the discourse.
