Many organists have been inspired to learn the organ after hearing this magnificent piece. As for me, I was exposed to the organ for the first time as a boy chorister, and when the organist of Hereford cathedral came to give a recital on our newly-refurbished school organ, he accompanied us singing Handel’s ‘Zadok The Priest.’ It was after hearing the incredible introduction of that piece that I knew I had to learn the organ. I began lessons the following month, and of course, one of the first pieces that I wanted to learn was this Toccata and Fugue in D minor. I learned it when I was twelve, and went on to perform it at many cathedrals, including St. Paul’s and Westminster in London. I also performed it at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, where Prince Phillip's funeral was held. I hope you like the new organ. Please listen with headphones for the best experience. I also hope you like the fact that I’m wearing shoes!! - a rarity for me, but a necessity for organists. Oh, and if you don’t already know, I wrote a piano version of this piece a couple of years ago which you might like - ruclips.net/video/4LF4q_X94ms/видео.html
David! You have your own pipe organ? Lucky you! I love this piece and your playing of it. I also love that piano version you did a while back (I have it on my phone). You, sir, are amazing! You pull out all the stops (haha)! And I love the touch of the bust of Bach looking on!
This is one of those pieces of music you can listen to for your whole life and still enjoy just as much. You remember every melody and progression it is so inspirational. Listening to a large pipe organ reminds me of Sunday morning mass as a child, you remember the sound going through your body.
Haha David, that you were wearing shoes was first I noticed and then scolded myself that I am here to listen to music not to stare at somebody shoes. The music is truly wonderful.
Many, many thanks! Your great organ-in-living-room resounds all the way here to Germany and opens my heart in such a difficult time here. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing this great sound with us. I will listen to it many more times with gratitude. Wonderful. Thank you very much, David, for this video.
Oh my! I am so...enthralled! I thoroughly enjoy the piano version of this toccata, but to hear it on the organ (with headphones)...words escape me, truly. David, you never cease to amaze with your gift - thank you! Teresa
After watching this again, I must say not only are you a joy to watch playing the organ, but its truly an incredible experience. Whoever is recording does an excellent job.
Wahouuuu.
Thank you so much for sending me this! This is a magnificent and spectacular performance! Also whoever is videotaping you performing does a marvelous job. Once again I am grateful to you for sending this to me. BRAVO!!
How absolutely wonderful to hear you play the organ again David. I remember you playing Bach's Toccata & Fugue In D Minor as a young boy. After attending many of your organ and piano recitals in England over the years, I have always been very aware of the mastery that you have shown the world. You have certainly become one of the finest composers and musicians in your field. Bravo! I am so very proud of you...
Amazing - loved your comment about shoes. I have played organ at church for decades and one of my organ professors actually encouraged me to play with thick socks to get used to the touch/feel of the pedals. That turned into a habit and 40 years later, I still play with nice wool socks on. Can hardly wait for the Widor!
I’ve never heard anyone more talented, David. This is so beautiful as well as your piano rendition, which I am still trying to play. Your organ is incredible - in your home! - and you are wearing shoes. :) Your musical devotion and dedication inspires me to no end! Thank you!🤗❤️🥰
Hello David, I agree with you that Bach's Toccata is everything you say it is and your performance of the piece was outstanding! However, my favorite organ piece is the Toccata by Widor. I love the majesty and brightness it conveys. I believe it might not be as well know as Bach's piece but nonetheless I love this piece. I would love to hear you play this Widor's Toccata at some future date. Incidentally, I am super impressed by the fact that you are as comfortable with the pipe organ as you are with piano! You are an amazing artist and composer! BRAVO DAVID!!! Regards, Will Ortiz
Hello Will. Thanks for the lovely comments as always. The Widor Toccata is my favourite too, and you can expect a video of that fairly soon. I’m actually more comfortable at the organ than the piano because I’m an organist who plays piano rather than the other way around. So glad that you enjoyed this one. All the best to you. David
Johann Sebastian Bach I call him' the Father of the Piano'. He lived the transition old harpsichord->new piano, around four thousand books he wrote, with one main thought and feeling: Teaching new generations to play piano correctly, without a HANON book in his time, and how better do it. My new students are working this last one from the end of XIX Century, but as well some books made by Bach in middle of XVIII Baroque era. At the end they have a wonderful piano playing of great quality, thank you again Master Bach, as well you too David for your demonstration since I know you with all your pianistic career and your compositions I give to all my Asian students here in Taiwan getting gold medals in International competitions. By the way, in another hand, you remember me the pipe in Cathedral Notre Dame of Paris when I was singing there and with others!, I am not pipe player but in my humble condition of Piano concert Player. Special thanks to He in heaven for give us so precious wonderful gifts of life. Jesus Santa Ana Jr. (ARTSANTANA)
My question is: what was Bach thinking while wrote this divine piece at?? At his time there wasn't computers or Iphones, but Bach's genius expresses wonderful in its divine music!!!!!!
Now, my husband would love to have this organ in our home... but then we could move out because we have not enough space for a massive organ... lol. ( we do it with a Johannus two clavier organ... Enough for us) Great to hear you do an organ piece, i love piano, i play piano but an organ piece is amazing. Thank you 😊
HOW can one brain even keep track of all the different parts for hands and feet, and command four limbs to play different keys at the same time?? I can't even... insane amount of training!
Oh David! This is truly magnificent. I have been listening to your Symphony Gothique but to see you actually play the organ takes me to 7th heaven. Your piano version of Bach Toccata is also superb. Thank you for the input on Bach but most important thank you for sharing part of your life with us. Just one more thing David, one of your very first compositions, Jalna, from The Shadows of Youth (great album by the way), have you made a piano version? Grazie maestro.
Thanks so much for the kind words. I had completely forgotten about “Jalna” (which was the name of our house in England) and it’s a great suggestion to do a piano version. I’ll definitely plan on it so thanks for that.
Coming from an organist, this is the absolute best pace I have ever heard for this piece. Amazing. Thanks for sharing. Would you consider recording BWV 578?
I grew up in a house with a chuch organ in my house. I have wonderful memories learning to play. This was truly amazing. What program do you use for the sheet music. I love that it turns pages on its own.
DARLING WOW THAT IS AMAZING THAT IS BEAUTIFUL LOVE IT I DIDN'T KNOW YOU COULD PLAY THAT'S GORGEOUS I GOT A BIG SMILE ON MY FACE THAT IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE FAVORITE FAVOR PIECES AND YOU DO IT LIKE IT'S NOTHING LOOK AT YOU PLAYING I'M CLAPPING AND I'M SMILING WOW HAVE A GREAT DAY I CAN'T PLAY THAT WITH THE SPOONS NOW CAN I LAUGH
Sorry Rash 31 , but it sounds like about 60 fingers and 30 toes!! Great Job David. You are almost as good as one of cousins, and that's saying a lot as she's a incredible Music college Trained Organist.
I had Mr Taylor as my organ teacher. I continued having private lessons with him, at St. Michael's church, after I left TC. I still play now. I have an ancient Viscount 2 manual (full pedal board) electronic organ at home.
A PIPE ORGAN IN A HOUSE IS A THING????????? 😳😳😳😳 I mean, the music is wonderful and is certainly a classic..... but thats a PIPE ORGAN.... in a HOUSE!!!

Hearing you play the school chapel organ inspired me to learn the organ.
It sounds amazing 🤩 I never get tired of listening to you playing!!! 😍
Having a pipe organ in the living room is the most epic thing i've seen in a long time. What a perfect person to have one too. Long Live David!
Now I want one one day... I've always wanted to learn the organ one day since I already know piano fairly well.
2 hands, 2 legs, 10 fingers, 2 eyes, 2 ears and 1 brain... Amazing well done 👏
