Tattoing a message into someone's head was a practice dated back from ancient Greeks where they put an important message into a slave's head, sending them to whoever the intended recipient was once the hair grew, and shaving their heads once they've reached their destination.
The writing tattooed on the beggars is Oczy's book, it was said a few times in episode 14, it'll also become more obvious later on in the series. It's another big point in Bad's character development that he spends months of his time dedicated to preserving the work of someone who he previously though could never write anything worthwhile. I think some people might be confused because in this episode Grabowski assumed it was Badeni's research since he knew nothing about Oczy.
Thanks for the reaction as Gold as ever :) About the text Badeni tatooed, I think it was Okzi's text because if you remember last episode Badeni explained he didn't want his work to be passed on but that Okzi's was shorter and easier to understand. On their last moments Okzi's was filled with hope because of that. I watched last week episode several times so I remember.
I still remember when I read the manga, Oczy + Badeni’s death and Nowak’s break down are in the same volume. I was so pissed at Nowak for killing off two of my favorite characters, and in the next two chapters, the author was like: Oh, you hate Nowak? How about seeing him being a loving father, mourning for the death of his daughter? Me: GOD DAMN IT! Why are you making me feel so bad for Nowak?! I’m still mourning for my two boys!
Remember when Badeni said that Oczy's book would be shared because it wasnt scholarly and could be shared among the common people but it had a very tiny chance of actually working? This is what he meant.
Saw the episode and was so excited to see your reaction! This show has so many twists. My favorite part of the episode was when they revealed the tattoos. I was so shocked I teared up, which actually has happened a few times for this show✋😭🤚
The interesting thing about the show, as you pointed out, Novak isn’t evil. The show excels in making the viewer sympathetic for a lot of character since they all follow realistic human behavior, only difference is they have different beliefs. Looking from Novak’s perspective, he’s fighting all his life for what he believes to be good and for his daughter, which is more noble than what any of the other characters in this show has ever done (thinking about it logically)
「そういう世界を変える為に、何が必要だと思いますか?知(chi)、です」 "What do you think is necessary to change such a world? It is knowledge. For some reason, Netflix translates "chi" in this Badeni's line as ''truth'', but it's "knowledge"
Nowak isn't evil, he doesn't enjoy what he does, just sees it as something necessary. That said, I didn't expect to feel so sad for him, believing his daughter, his reason for living, was gone. Badeni and Oczy were good for each other for sure, I wish we could have had more time with them. It would be interesting if those are actually tattoos on their heads. Leviticus (Old Testament) forbids them.
A little offering of perspectives, I think the whole thing between Nowak and smol Jolenta regarding faith is not for something like "keeping her safe from being his next torture victim", it is simply a religious father trying to teach his little daughter what he believes to be the strict ultimate guidance for humans to live that one must adhere to regardless of one's age or situation. He getting triggered at Jolenta for putting the blame on God is more likely to be reactive response since his ears are accustomed to detect blasphemous lines.
The bishop's son made a mistake and he doesn't even know. He just allowed Nowak to go through the whole grieving process. Now when Jolenta and him eventually meet again, he's basically gonna be given another chance to support her after having reflected about his choices. I'm sure there will still be hesitancy, but because of this now he's gonna be way more willing to help than before. And at the very least he'll have to see Jolenta's "death" as the conspiracy that it is and start questioning him.
it would be better if he didn't see it since he spoils some things. this anime has many unexpected twists and the best thing is not to spoil. but yes, the pv is very good haha
It’s time for the mantle to be passed once again…

How they portrayed Nowak's shock upon learning of Jolenta's death is done to perfection. No anger, no reactions, literally his world just crumbled

That's what I was thinking, that it was actually Oczy's book
