  • Michael 'Double M' Moorer took on 'Big' George Foreman in a fight dubbed "One for the Ages" on November 5th, 1994 at the MGM Grand in Paradise, Nevada.
George Foreman was returning from a shaky restart to professional boxing after ending a 10+ year retirement to once again challenge for the WBA and IBF Heavyweight titles.
The incredibly tough and durable Michael Moorer was eventually put away in the 10th round. Foreman was a champion once again!

If Moorer had just listened to his corner, there's no reason he shouldn't have won. Stay away from the right, make George fight fast, punch and move right. He just kept trying to square up against George, that's why he lost.
His corner had it right, that car analogy was priceless. Make an old car go fast and it'll break down. Moorer just wouldn't listen.

Holyfield beat foreman, but foreman just wouldn't go down, he kept coming back, that match was kinda like a draw, because Holyfield could have lost ,if they kept going cause he was through! ....and this Moore guy beat Holyfield? Moore wasn't moving around enough he sat there and tried to go head up with foreman, that's where he messed up, foreman hit hard and got heavy hands

I notice after the second round Teddy Atlas was saying that, about moving to his right to get away from George's right hand. Then from the start of round three Moorer is consistently moving to his...left! Obviously it's easier said than done to put advice into practice if instinct or habit is telling you to do something different, but Atlas was right about the biggest danger.

It takes alot of power to move those big arms. Foreman has good blocking and parrying too, his perceived sluggishness is just him conserving energy. Well done George.

Coach of Michael Moorer can tell him after the fight "see? told you" The coach exactly told him what Foreman will do in round 10, and it happened the exact same way he told him... and Moorer still didnt see that coming. Foreman took a breather the whole round 9 cause he knew that Moorer was exhausted. Moorer threw everything he got in the rounds before, nothing hurt Foreman, and than Foreman just "executed" him in round 10 and the Coach of Moorer (sorry dont know his name right now) saw that coming in the break. But i dont think Moorer was even able to understand a single word, he didnt even respond a single time in that break. Its just incredible how some coaches can see things coming and when they will happen, this is an example in that regard. He is a clairvoyant :D

With hindsight it's obvious George is focused on landing that big right hand the whole fight. He conserves energy, just pawing with his opponent until he sees the opportunity. Michael's corner knew what George was doing. For some reason in the 10th round, Michael decides to stand unnecessarily infront of him and trade shots. Then boom, lights out.

It's useful hearing the fight without the commentary; after Moorer controlled round 9, in which the crowd was relatively quiet most of the time with occasional shouts of encouragement for Moorer, round 10 drew a lot more noise from the crowd. Foreman was soon throwing and landing more often with the right and putting more force into his punches, they were clearly having a bigger effect on Moorer. The constant background murmur grew in volume and was frequently punctuated by excited exclamations as the round went on, the recognition by all fans that Foreman was upping the ante and having a lot of success exciting his own fans and worrying Moorer's.

I heard a story on the JRE podcast from either Freddy Roach or Teddy Atlas himself told Joe that Foreman set this KO up over the WHOLE fight by purposely TRYING to pull his power back some on all his punches, he said he let a few go in the early rounds a little harder than he meant to but that he never threw 1 punch at 100% prior to round 10 as he knew Moorer at this stage of their careers was a far superior technical boxer & much faster so he felt like he would tire easily if he threw full force & get pieced up for 12 rounds. So instead he slowly but surely set Moorer up by firing hard punches still but only at like 70% power for the most part, & as Moorer won round after round of moslty fairly close rounds still he started gaining confidence in his chin & thinking George didnt have the power anymore to KO a young prime champion. So as the fight hit the 10th round of a 12 round fight that was the round George had predetermined before time that he wouls start letting his hands go full force late in the fight while having more energy then usual since he was conserving energy all fight & especially in the 9th combined with by then a somewhat fatigued/slower & falsely overconfident in his chin Moorer from thinking he had took the best Foreman could offer already....that is truly playing chess to his checkers

I know the "cool" thing to do by "experts" is crap all over him as one of the best of all time but seriously look at this 2 guys standed flat footed with limited head movements (i know that was more actually Foremans actual style late in his career) but conpare that to a young champion Mike Tyson & the way he was constantly moving his head, dipping, ducking & exploding. He was actually underrated imo. A prime Tyson the version that fought Berbick, Frazier, Holmes, or Spinks, KO's Moorer in round 1 in this fight.

Yet another fanboy ruining a boxing thread.
Tyson never beat one good heavy in their prime. He never came from behind or off the canvas to win a fight, was KTFO 5 times and quit twice.
Washed up old drug addicts, handpicked cans, and bums are easy to.look good against.
Prime Liston and Foreman would have deposited him on fucking Pluto.

      Circumstances.

There was no reason to waste all of his energy missing Ali on the ropes
Plus it was exhaustion that did for him, Foreman has a chin of fucking admantium

Foreman is a gold medalist,.. his punching power overshadowed his boxing ability, his subtle clever maneuvering of Moorer into his optimal striking range was genius and payed off in the tenth.
