People who didn't witness them just don't get how loud they were. The V6 are loud compared to your average sporty road car of course. But these shook the floor and were painful.
Unfortunately I’ve never heard a f1 v10 within close distance (I was at Maranello they were driving the Ferrari F1 2003) in real life, but I did experience the Ferrari F1 2012 and it legit went through my ear protection and through my fucking intestines. IMAGINE this fucking thing coming around the corner....
i've been to the 2017 Hungarian GP, the two-seater V10 VIP showcar was louder than the entire field of twenty V6s and could be distinctively heard at any distance while it roared around the track
I live near Ferrari's Fiorano test track and i can assure you when I was a kid I could hear very well and clearly the V10s (and also V8s; even today when they occasionally use older F1 cars for "Corse Clienti" or something like that), while now V6s are a lot less noisy

Went to the Melbourne GP as a spectator in 1999 and for work in 2000. Nothing shakes your insides like the V10s blasting past. Each gear shift you could feel in your chest. Could hear them echoing all across the city.
I was at Indy in 2004, those shifts sounded like grenades!! And during practice I was standing trackside at the last turn onto the straight, man no sound will EVER compare to that .
I was at Monaco in 2006. Even the sound of the V8 engines, when seated on Rocher, going up the hill to Beau Rivage on the other side of the port was amazing.
It was very special to have been part of that era. I also stood there as a journo back in the late '80's - mid '90's, to see without catch fencing and to hear the full-sized engines was incredible. Something that will never come back sadly.
pretty sure fighter jets are louder than the V10 on pure decibels, but these cars sound louder because of their pitch. I've heard a vulcan bomber on a low fly by before, I think they're something like 170db full thrust, but while it was deafeningly loud, it wasn't particularly uncomfortable or painful. I never heard the V10s but the V8s were painful even with ear protection.
I remember Austria GP 2002, 8:59 in the morning, walking behind the grandstand. Everyone was sort of slow and still tired when the clock turned 9:00. I had my dad on the phone watching it on TV, he Said „now they are coming!“. V10 sound immediately sounded all over the place and made everyone start running to catch a view on what immediately happened. The whole place got fired up!!
I was in Monaco with my older brother I was 13. I'll always remember that day, I was shocked and fascinated in the same time. From that moment, I knew it was in my blood. Damn you FIA
I watch a race from the current season and I think I'm able to cope with the V6 now. But then I go on RUclips and watch a clip from the V10 era and I'm like "NOPE, BRING THIS BACK!"
I can imagine how deafening that must have been and yet I can also imagine how glorious that was to witness in person. Thanks for posting this. Was awesome to watch.
Back then it was mandatory to wear ear protection at the grand stand (start finish lane), today its just a recommendation and tbh, you dont really need it.
I wish I could've heard this. I've seen many Top Fuel races, and I can appreciate truly *loud* sounds...and these are basically the equivalent decibel level, but MUCH higher-pitched which means your ears will perceive it as significantly even LOUDER than a Top Fuel race..... And then add the tunnel, with hard surfaces on all sides! Wow. I'd be doubling-up on the ear plugs for sure.
I remember Silverstone in the late 90's. The sound when they were braking sent thunderclaps around the grandstands that you felt in you're chest. I was in awe at the energy and power of these things. The Renault Espace F1 car and Batmobile were there too if i recall and Johnny Herbert won the day. Then it pissed it down and they only cars moving were Escort Cossies 4x4 across the fields jumping the queue to leave.
Fantastic, epic, legendary, ultimative... words that come to my mind when hearing V10 and causing kind of vibration on my skin 🤩. Today’s V6 hybrids are a violation towards any fan you don’t hear the cars when they are at the other site of a track and you even don’t need ear protection when they are passing you. Watching this clip, turning up my notebook's volume, causes more loudness than nowadays f1 cars😑😑
The f1 i grow up with i was so Lucky to see a race during the v10 days i was at monza in 2004 with my dad and my uncle to watch it and belive me it was so loud as hell🙏😨🔥
I remember the first time I heard the sound live back in 2002... as the sound got louder and louder my brains was telling me "It cannot possibly get louder than this" but it just kept going, my ears were ringing and I was on the hillside (Sepang F1) yet it was that loud. Unbelievable!
Love how some people on social media says a V10 F1 car is noise after few seconds. Sure maybe noise to some but to any F1 fans or even some car enthusiasts this is music and eargasm. V6 hybrid turbos cars maybe more technologically advanced and faster but nothing beats the sight and sound of a naturally aspirated F1 car powered by a V10
I remember when one guy was saying he thought he was going deaf after a demonstration of V8 F1 cars and all I could think was mate, you've never been to a V10 race in Monaco, that's really deafening. I'm sure there are those who've experienced the V12s who think that was the pinnacle of F1.
