    As has been mentioned, the AAM axles started in 2003 model year... But one correction to what Andy said about the spider gears. They do indeed spin while driving straight in 2wd on trucks with a Central Axle Disconnect. That intermediate shaft is spinning as well, it will spin 2x wheel speed, this is how the front drive shaft doesn't spin. So keeping up with fluid level and fixing any leaks in these is imperative to keeping your spider gears happy. The 94-01 2nd gen trucks faced the problem, but at the end of the day it's better than grenading transfer cases and throwing front driveshafts on the interstate.

    They went to the 11.5" AAM in 2003 with the then new, 3rd gen RAM.
    If you had the HO engine, you would have the 11.8" AAM axle.

    Make sure you go through the "re-learn" period when you switch up the trans program. It's about a 100 mile easy driving so the trans relearn it's shift points.

    They switched to the AAM axles when they went to the 3rd gen body style. 1st & 2nd gens have the Dana. The 11.5 AAM has about 500 ft lbs of torque higher rating than a Dana 80 but has a lower gross axle weight rating

    I don't know if this comment has been made but I'm going to make it in case it has not.. correction on your timeline of aam uses by Dodge / Ram. A a m axles were Incorporated in late 2002 for the 2003 model year. Chrysler has been using American Axle manufacturing for their heavy duty lineup 2003 model year to current. Minor design changes in the housing and abs configurations, but the overall design of the axles and differentials are nearly identical from 2003.

    I have 17, same truck same size tires. Not the trans problem of gear deciding, only the softness on shifts. The issue is basically the Valvebody and low fluid pressure. I got a Warranty trans partial rebuild at 95k miles, and they didn't do the Valvebody. Only the solenoid pack, torque converter, fluid pump, and 2 of the 4 Valvebody pistons. I told them the Valvebody was the biggest problem by bad design and they just ignored me and did almost everything else, probably to keep it under the 70% repair which would trigger FCA replacing the Whole trans.
    I also have the EZ Link PPEI tune. With the higher fluid pressure of their Trans Tune, the shifts are bumpier/knocking. So I didn't ride it hard.
    But gears are proper for oversized tires anyways, not just because of a trans problem. Most boys don't know or care about gears, because it's too expensive.

    Your gear ratio fault code is a transmission code and is usually set due to slippage in the transmission. There should be a generic like p0700 and then another code(s) to tell you the specific gear.

    • @BEASTProjects
      @BEASTProjects  6 лет назад

      The codes told me the specific gear. Trust me, it wasn’t slipping. It just didn’t know when to shift or rather it was searching for the right gear. We’re all fixed up now after the codes were cleared & the quick trans relearn procedure was completed with the Snap On tool.

    • @jamesharrison6871
      @jamesharrison6871 6 лет назад +1

      Did you upgrade your trans to go with the new tuning... im willing to bet it was slipping in 5th gear. Does your EZ lynk not tell you when the convertor is locked and when it is slipping? 4th gear is 1to1 5th is overdrive and 6th is double overdrive so to speak... My mm3 tuner with warp tunes from double r diesel tells me trans line pressures (both desired and actual) along with TC lockup...

    What type of warranty was given on the parts and labor in case you start having problems after the gear change? I want a gear swap for my 2016 Ram 2500 but I'm afraid of seals starting to leak alot quicker once all the factory installed gearing, bearings and seals are removed and swapped out.

  • @madman432000

    with a manual trans you wouldn't have shift problems or error codes., 😊 just jerking your chain. So ram went back to a front axle disconnect in later years? My 2004 doesn't have that, front driveline and axles turn all the time.

    Do you have to change the front pinion/ring gear just because you are changing the rear? Everything is independent until you activate 4wd right? So 99% of the time you are in RWD and accomplishing your goal just changing the rear ratio. If I’m wrong please explain. Thanks!

    Anyone know where is shop is located an a name? I have 3.42 with 68rfe, and I can't stand it. I'd like 3.73. Right now going down the highway at 85mph my rpm is barely at 1600 my opinion 1600rpm is to low cruzing down the highway hard on tanny and 85mph honestly is to fast to Cruz at. And 5th gear I'm doing 70mph an rmp at 2100 it's terrible. 3.42 should have never been put in a HD truck!

    So how much can one expect to pay for labor on a job like this?

    • @BEASTProjects
      @BEASTProjects  6 лет назад +1

      Well, with complications it took 4 days to complete & without complications, it wouldn’t have taken 2.5 days. So easy $2K+ in labor for both diffs.

      Thanks for the info! I knew it wasn’t going to be cheap. Can’t wait to hear how it drives now and what rpms are like.

    I ended up on this cus we did one at work today. We needed a 6x torque multiplayer and a 4ft breaker to crush the sleeve and was wondering if you needed the same. But you never showed the tightening of the rear pinion. Did you need to get crazy like we did? We had at least 1200 pounds of torque before it started to move.

      Yeah, we ran into problems & I ended helping instead of filming most of the rear.

    15:03 Improper use of tools is not to good of a sign to see when someone is doing such a job that requires a precision fit. had he done this properly the press would have had no trouble at all doing this job.

    My comment is find another gear shop these guys don’t have the right tools to work on your truck this video makes them look like a joke do you want to take it to a real gear shop go to tri county in Pomona California or the gear shop in Paramount California tell them dan sent you you’ll be very happy with the outcome they’re awesome guys and they do have the right tools in the ride experience to make your truck just like it was from the factory you don’t use a blow torch to take a bearing off of a perfectly good Pinyan and ruin the Pinyan with the heat never seen anything like that what a joke
