Met Willie Twice once as The Highwaymen, in Fresno,Ca. and once he played in my town in 99 and signed my old guitar.Willie would have jammed with me right then,he loves to play that old Martin.I heard a few days ago that Bobby had passed, that had to kick Willies heart, you can't replace someone like that.

I only got to meet Bobbie once. At the time I was touring for a short time with the Dale Jackson Band. Freddy Fletcher was the drummer. I stayed with Freddy in Austin when we weren't on the road. During one of those lulls, Freddy and I went to Cleburne to an Elks Lodge were Willie was celebrating his mom's birthday. Freddy introduced me to his mom and she was the most gracious and genuine person I'd ever met. During Willie's performance, I was sitting next to his mom at one of the long tables watching the band. Willie's mom leaned over to me and said, "Why does he play that beat up old guitar with the hole in it? I bought him a $3000 guitar and he never plays it." I didn't know what to say, so I just told her that guitar is like family to him. She smiled. During a break everyone went outside in the parking lot where Willie had a brand new Mercedes, wrapped in a giant red bow he bought for his mom. The world is a little sadder place without Bobbie Nelson in it.

Otis, every time you open with, "Hey Friends..." it's such a soothing sound. Thank you. I left a comment on twitter about my getting to meet Bobbie Nelson. It was back in the mid-sixties, and I was in school at the University of Texas and worked five to midnight at a high-rise apartment complex. I worked at the front desk, and there were separate elevators for the people who lived in the apartments and another set for the restaurant and club that were on the top floors of the building. The restaurant was a really elegant place called the Polonaise. From time to time, when they'd close around 10 pm. they'd ask me to talley up their receipts for the night, and they'd bring me a serving of chocolate mousse as a thank you. Nice folks. Anyway, Bobbie was the pianist at the restaurant, and she'd come in around 6:30 or 7:00 in an evening gown, her hair up in a bun, and take the elevator up to the restaurant. I introduced myself to her once, and when she told me her last name, I asked if she was related to Willie, and she told me. This was before all the outlaw stuff, and Willie was not so well known. He was one of the few C&W types who performed in a regular suit, not one of those Nudie rhinestone things. Bobbie seemed surprised that I knew who Willie was, and from time to time, she'd tell me he was performing in Fort Worth or New Orleans, or wherever, and I always asked her to wish him well. When I finally graduated from school, I moved to New York, and of course forgot about those conversations. Then, a few years later, I saw where Bobbie was working with Willie as part of the band, and it made me feel so good because I knew how much she loved being with him. I always loved seeing her with that hat on her head, showing that piano who was boss. And I often thought, "I wonder if all the people watching her have any idea what an amazing pianist and person in general Bobbie Nelson is?"

Hi from the Devon UK. I saw Willie and Bobbie at the Super Bowl in 07 in Phoenix, 300-400 people (I think it was an NFL thing, I was a sponsor). He played a concert before game and I was fortunate to be in the front row. I was amazed that Willie looked me directly in my eyes while he was singing, I was dumbfounded, willie connected with ME! Then I realized he was doing that with the entire audience, making eye contact. What an awesome human

I know exactly what you mean, Rich; I had the same thing happen. Mine was at the pro-am at the Legends of Golf seniors tournament they used to hold in Austin. I was there shooting photos, and Willie came walking up and looked at me the same way. I'd never had anyone look at me like that. It was like he was looking into my soul.

Willie did an album called The Hungry Years, all pop songs from the thirties and forties that you would have heard on local radio stations in central Texas. One song, Detour , There’s a Muddy road ahead, was a song my mother would sing to calm her three sons down as we drove across miles and miles of Texas. I was transported to the back seat of that ‘53 Chevy when I heard Willie sing it. I’m sure Bobbi played on that album.

Have met Willie Nelson 3 times, once randomly in a parking lot in Rosemont, IL, of all places, lol, most gracious man. Friendly, almost timid, until he finds out you're not trying to get an autograph or photo op. Then he became even more gracious, if that's possible. Closest I ever came to meeting Bobbie was a smile and wave as she walked off stage once, from a few feet away. Willie just adored sister Bobbie, this has got to be really hard on him and their families. You, and these videos are a treasure Otis.

great great album, prob the world would be a lot better if everyone had that one on regular rotation. Booker T plays a lot on it too, but its real easy to hear which one is him or Bobbie, by how they play. She has a real distinctive old school style. You really cant over state how important she was to Willie's music, and of course one of the reasons he moved back to TX.

I saw Willie Nelson and family about 10 years ago in a small North Georgia establishment. It was not a bar it was more like a fairgrounds building. I couldn't believe they were playing there. After the show the whole band took autographs. Willie was the first to leave and then others left and Bobby stayed as long as they're were people there. It was great, the show was great.

A friend worked for Texas Roadhouse and was part of pre concert events. She introduced us. I got to be the photographer for the event. I got to sit there and talk to Willie. Be signed my dad's LP of To Lefty from Willie, my favorite. Later, at the show in the Waterloo stock area he cheersed me at the side stage. I must've made an impression. Two weeks later he asked my friend where i was that week. Made my life. Willie and Bobbie are legends

Man... In '79 I was a dyed in the wool KISS freak. Until I heard Willie for the first time. His music spoke to my 11 year old self like no other. Opened me up to experiencing/appreciating the vast expanse of American music and beyond. I saw Willie, Bobbie by his side, in '83, in Seattle. Emmylou was the opener. What a show... RIP Bobbie Nelson. Otis. Thanks for what you're doing.

Drove up from South Miami to Sunrise Musical Theater to see Willie with Leon Russell doing standards. This was in the late 80's (?) driving a VW van.... its scary looking back on it... getting blown all over the turnpike.
At the end of the show I noticed people milling around the front of the stage, and then Wllie came out, and started shaking hands. I was shy, and was, well, at the end of the line. When he was able to get around to shake my hand he knew that, and kind of looked down, and smiled at me. There is something in that moment for me. Bless

I've only seen Willie twice, but the first time in California I didn't even realize who Bobbie was. But her playing was phenomenal and I was amazed that she was 87 at the time. The whole band sounded great. Willie was sick that night so he only sang 3 songs--but the band kept going and it was tight, one of the best concerts I've ever seen. The next day the ticket money was refunded anyway. Classy people. A sad day. RIP, Bobbie.

Been off line for a while traveling and getting caught up on my Otis. Always great content my friend! Growing up in Texas (and a musical family) I have a ton of Willie stories, but the best time I ever had was when I was with the local (union). Got to meet Willie on the bus with maybe 5 people total, then backstage for the show (which was amazing as usual). Such incredibly kind people, and terribly grateful for the hospitality they shared. Bobbie is truly missed. Thanks again Otis for the great content. It's like sitting down at the Kathleen table with an old friend. Love from Texas.

I have been to about 5 or 6 of Willie's concerts and snagged an autograph a couple of times and got my picture taken with him. Very generous with his time he used to stay till the end signing autographs. Mohegan Sun, Springfield Civic Center, Oakdale Theater in CT.
But the time I remember the best was about 37 years ago he played the Eastern States Exposition (the BIG E) in West Springfield, MA. Free concert. he played all his hits and when he was done he left the stage and the band started packing up. Then Willie re appeared and played 6 or so more songs with the band. Then he left the stage again and the band started packing up again and I started to walk away .
Wouldn't you know Willie re appeared by himself just him and his guitar and played a bunch more of his songs. A great man and he loves his fans.
Just read the book Willie & Bobbi wrote a year or so ago. She went through a lot and didn't have an easy life. By all reports a wonderful woman. She will be missed.

only interview I ever saw was when they were on the road together; and a journalist who obviously knew very little about her asked all her questions about Willie. One was super funny... They asked Bobbie how often Willie smoked weed. She said, "about the time I think I don't smell it anymore, he lights another one up". And then she said, she is concerned and wishes he would not smoke so often! She was the class act of any group she was in! Willie has long said that she was the real musician in the family. I will miss her playing for sure!

RIP Bobbie seeing Willie without Bobbie would be weird. When she’d play it was a walk back in time stylistically to a different time and made the family bands sound unique. No road band sounded like the family band. It’s getting weird at 55 raised on Willie, Waylon and Jerry Jeff and the like the end of being able to experience that type of music is live is ending in some ways and it is sad but the musical memories live on forever. Thankfully there are some artists with that independent spirt making good music mostly in small clubs and at house concerts. A supported live music scene is thankfully still surviving in and around Austin, Fort Worth and Gruene. I hope there are pockets were this is still true in other parts of our country. Thanks Otis what you do is appreciated!

Both bands were road hot and on it that night. It was a fantastic show. Paul English, Jody Payne, Bee Spears, Poodie and now Bobbie Nelson are gone now. Rest in peace.
I remember watching Jerry Clower with my Dad on all those 70s and early 80s country music shows like Pop Goes The Country or The Porter Waggoner Show. I remember his laugh and him slapping my leg on the ones he thought were extra funny. Great times.

Couldn't help but comment. I almost got in a fistfight at a Dylan show. It was at a casino in Tahoe and the crowd seemed to me to not be fans, but more it was part of their vacation...to see a show. Willie was the opener and he was sick. I don't know if he mentioned it or someone else did, but we were close and you could see he was sick. He looked like he had just gotten out of bed and walked from his bus to the stage. The respectful part for me was that "the show must go on", he got on stage and did his set. It was good. This was in the early 2000's and I assume most of the crowd were there to see Dylan. Halfway through Willie's set the people in front of us started chatting. Loud and drunk, they were just having a party. Completely ignoring his set. I was pissed, I mean, that is Willie Nelson you fuckers Dylan should be opening for him. At one point they got so loud and obnoxious they were interfering with my ability to enjoy his set. So I had to say something. In my usual way, I was abrasive and demeaning to them. If my wife had not been with me I would have (or attempted to) beat the shit out of those 3 "yuppies" (my leftover term from the 80's that I still use today to describe a certain group of people)... (probably well outdated). Anyway, that is my self-righteous Willie story and of course, like you I am definitely full of shit. Really the point was that Willie got up and did his show, and it was great in spite of looking like he was in the midst of a bout with the flu. Thanks for the stories Otis, keep it up. I am still enjoying them. Oh, I got to see Trigger up close. I had a shop above a (un-named to protect the innocent) kinda famous guitar repair guy and Willie was in town and something drastic was going on with Trigger so my friend got to work on it. I was in the room when they opened the guitar case and the reek of pot lofted out of the case filling the room... haha it was classic. I have a close-up picture somewhere of it, and it is so cool. You are a National treasure. I wish some like you existed who could tell similar anecdotes about The Music scene in Tulsa Oklahoma from the sixties to the nineties. as I have been asked to write the biography of a somewhat talented female vocalist who flourished-and I mean FLOURISHED-in that city during that epoch.
. "She is part Tammy Wynette, part Otis Redding, and part truckdriver." Leon Russell. " And, I might add, all woman.

Speaking of the load in, some buddies and I worked at a festival near Cincinnati in the 70s. The lineup was diverse and interesting. The opening act was the Cars. Also on the bill was Starcastle, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, 38 Special and the headliners were The Beach Boys. It was cool to hang out just off stage while these bands played. When it was time for The Beach Boys we had to leave the stage completely. For some reason that really pissed us off, but we made $50 for 14 hours of work and got a couple of Big Macs so all told a good day.

I was Poodies roommate from 83 to early 87. Bobbie was an awesome woman. One time I visited her at her house. We were drinking coffee, she already knew my mother had passed and she was trying to comfort me. She told me that when her grandmother died, she said that a white dove landed near them as they talked about losing their grandmother. A few minutes later, a white dove landed on the patio and walked around a little, then flew off. Bobbie looked at me and said Michael, I think your mom just let you know that she is o.k.

I went to a Willie Nelson concert at The Meadowlands in New Jersey. We had about the worst seats, behind the stage, so high up I think there were only six seats in our row. There may have been one row behind us, but I don’t remember if that’s accurate. Willie spent about half the show facing toward us, while the band still faced forward. It was awesome!

    Hey Otis,
I have a very similar Willie load in story. Willie & Family played Wild Adventures Amusement Parks in Valdosta, Ga in 1999. A friend's dad was a partner in the company that lease his buses & drivers, so we scored backstage passes.
Gator saw 5 beefy college boys and immediately put is to work totin' amps and road cases.
I do have one up on you though, Otis.
I'm not the upstanding gentleman you are, and as I passed by Trigger, I couldn't resist. I GENTLY touched the headstock. Gator was on me like a hawk and gave me a good tongue lashing. It was worth it though, and to quote the great Jerry Clower, "If I'm Lyin', I'm Dyin'!"...
Keep the good stuff coming! You're a hell of a bullshiter and a born storyteller.

I have a Bobbie and Willie Nelson story. This was about 28 years ago in Beecaves, Texas. My wife, two-year-old daughter and I were going to the Thai Kitchen restaurant in Rollingwood. As we were pulling into the parking lot a Mercedes Benz parked beside us. I was getting my daughter out of the car seat and I noticed two people getting out of the Mercedes-Benz wearing karate outfits. They had long hair down to their waist and they went inside with their karate outfits on. I walked by their table on the way to the back to where the restroom is to wash my hands and saw it was Willie and Bobbie Nelson. I told my wife that she should go to the restroom and to glance over at their table. She responded that she did not need to go to the restroom and I urged her to do so. She did and she came back all excited at seeing Willie. At the end of the meal Willie stopped at our table to faun over my daughter. She was and still is adorable. Willie glanced over at me and he stoned me, he exudes such calm. I can talk to anybody, but was speechless in his presence.

Otis, I don't know if you take requests for stories but do you know ANYONE that has any stories about Mother Maybelle Carter? She is a huge influence on my music as I loved her guitar and Autoharp playing but I know she passed away in the late 70s so it's probably more difficult to find people that knew her but I would love a story or two about her.

Thanks for the great story of Willie and Bobbi, here piano fit well with Willie's songs. Have you ever seen Willie's card trick? It's on RUclips and Bobbi sits there and cuts the cards when he needs her too. Check it out it's one of those story card tricks called The Rich
Man and The Porter, just search Willie's Card Trick, I am going to watch it now just to see Bobbi again with Willie. Take care friend. Gary from Tennessee ✌️🤘

I was just listening to a fairly newer Willie song called something like, You Dont Get Over it, But You can get Through (not the title but the jist..of it.
It's a great song that hits hard, when you're my age you get more alone all the time as people you love mive on to the next part....When you're Willie's age ...man.
Have a great day, always get my Saturday off to a good start.

saw my 57th Willie show on Sunday. Watched you several times but this is my first comment. Met Sister Bobbie at Luck during a screening of Red Headed Stranger in 2019. She was just sitting among the crowd and I waited for a time when it seemed like she would be open to chatting.
-Side note- I think Billy English may have given me the go ahead, but I can't quite remember. Incredible fellow himself who needs an episode dedicated to him (appeared on Red Headed Stranger in 1975 and I saw him with Willie yesterday).
I met Sister Bobbie and it was so hard for me to keep it together and not start crying just being in her presence and feeling her warmth. She signed my copy of "It's a Long Story" on the first page she was mentioned and was gracious enough to take a picture. Every story I hear about her is like that. Heard she liked to chill at The Broken Spoke. Many more memories coming up, but I look forward to hopefully sharing those in person one day.
