I remembered when I was in middle school and we had to read this book in class. I all was wanted to read it again, because I never finished the story, and couldn't remember the name. Came across this video and the moment I heard plane crash and turtle eggs memories of being back in class reading this book came back to me. I'm going to pick up this book one day and read it.
Me: *in middle school reading it in school and absolutely loving it, along with near the end of the year we are going to read a cool book called "Outsiders"
I remember my mom got the audiobook from our local library when I was a kid and we used to listen to it everyday waiting for what comes next in each chapter 🥺🙏
I was introduced to this book by a couple of strangers while I was on vacation when I was around 13 or 14. I met a man and woman when I was traveling from Florida to Michigan and Wisconsin in my grandpa's RV. At an RV park I met a random couple a man and woman who was traveling by motorcycle. For some reason they seemed fascinated by me and we talked, they told me about the two books. Although it wasn't smart I gave them a mailing address when we parted ways and they wrote me a letter containing the books. Unfortunately I never took the time to write them back and lost the letter. As a child sharing one's address with a stranger was absolutely stupid of course, but I'm glad I did it. I always feel bad I never wrote them back, they probably never knew I got the books sure because of that. This was around 2007 or so. But I did get the books and I did read them and I did enjoy it. If you were that random couple I met in some random state in 2007 or so who rode motorcycles and told me about the books and took the time to mail them to me, thanks I greatly appreciate it and sorry I never wrote back.
I read this as a kid, and loved it so much because I always had carried a hatchet around when I was younger for chopping down trees to build forts and etc. I read the Transall Saga after this, which is a similar sci-fi variation of the same situation, authored by Paulson as well. They are both fantastic books, and I'm truly glad to have experienced their influence.
For every English class that I had from elementary school, all the way up through high school, I wrote one book report on hatchet per year. My favorite book of all time and each year I read it my book report got better and better lol
I have no Idea when I read it, but this is one of the few books that is so embedded into my mind, I still remembered some key parts. For some odd reason lately it popped up in my mind. And I finally found it again.
My 5th grade teacher made us read this and write 60-80 page book report the hardest project i’ve ever done in my life i am now in highschool and still have never done a project near as hard as that was the book was amazing though, i love that teacher!
If you're a schoolkid and you have to read this and you think it sucks, it gets a lot better. There's a psychological shift Brian develops and he goes into survival mode. He's kind of a weak kid until then. Stick with it. This book is incredible.
After reading the book in class I went out of my way to find and read both the sequels - one a hypothetical “what if” story about Brian needing to survive the winter, and one about Brian’s return to society and his realization that he prefers life in nature.
About the book Hatchet, the part of the book where he goes underwater into the submerged airplane with a month old rotting corpse right there in the plane too is quite a psychological thriller for a young child. They had us read this when we were in 8th or 9th grade if i can remember correcty, which means i was about 13 years old.
I don't remember exactly what grade I was in when we had to read it, but I still vividly remember that scene. And then after we read the book, the teacher had us watch the movie based on it and I remember the dread knowing that scene was coming lol
Part 2 was so good when he meets the blind counselor who ask Brian to explain in detail of what he experienced in the wilderness alone freaking mint series
I remember reading this book for summer reading and I hated doing that but this book I had such imagination while reading it. I hope they make a movie for this book
I don't think there's a better book, tbh I got really lucky that I got to read it, and this was a time I didn't like to read but I was so intrigued, I wanted to know what the whole story was. Needless to say, it's the best book ever.
book name : hatchet author : gary paulsen a thirteen year old boy brian robeson is on a bush plane which he is flying to Hampton in new york his parents had gotten divorced and his mother gave him a hatchet but suddenly the pilot had a heart attack and brian was trying to control the plane but he couldn’t , the plane had crashed into the lake.
You should read The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian it's a great book. Maybe not as good as Hatchet but still really enjoyable. A Raisin in the Sun is also pretty good but not as good as the other two
I remember reading this in 4th grade. Our teacher was having us follow along with an audio book, and we got to the part when the pilot has a heart attack. I remember the pilot mentioning in the book how it felt like his chest was coming apart, and I envisioned the guys heart quite literally ripping his chest open from the inside out. Afterwards, I start feeling kinda lightheaded, so I go over and let my teacher know I’m feeling kinda funny. She just kinda dismissed it and told me to go back to my seat. I turn around, take at least 5 steps, and passed out. I hit my head on the giant ac unit they had in the wall and knocked over a couple books, but overall I was fine.
I could’ve used the vid back in 6th grade we had to read this book and then do a poster report on it as our final project for the end of the year in language class
Quicker version. Brian is flying to Canada to meet his father. His mother gave him a hatchet because they were going into the wilderness to hunt. (i think i forgot) His pilot had a heart attack and died, he crashed into the Canadian wilderness and lived. He was very hungry and ate fish, he built a house and animals attacked him. Basically the same thing happened and there was a tornado. (In the movie but idk abt the book) He went to the plane, and the hatchet fell into the water so he got it back up. He kicked and broke down a part of the plane and got the survival pack. The pilot got eaten by fish.. (if you watch the movie once you see Brian going to the plane with a piece of wood cover your eyes .) He screamed and went back. And then he ate the food in it and another pilot came, Then he got saved. The end :3
I see you have a Cessna 406, but it is not a twin Cessna 406. On page 24, when the engine runs out of fuel, the text says “the engine coughed,” meaning only one engine. If you look up Cessna 406 bush plane (bush plane is mentioned on page 1) you will see pictures of a single engine high wing. No hate, I’m just doing a book report on this book and wanted to share my view.
Read this book in the 4th Grade we had a reward system where you were tested on the story and given points to spend on full-size candy bars if you passed.
This is a great book I am in 4 grade and my teacher reads us it and it’s interesting we were on chapter 19 but thanks because you finish the story for me
📚 Nostalgia hit revisiting "Hatchet" by Gary Paulsen, a high school classic that fueled my love for survival tales. 🪓 Paulsen's vivid storytelling immerses you in Brian's wilderness struggle, evoking both fear and awe. A timeless adventure that leaves an enduring impact. 🌟 #HighSchoolReads #Hatchet #BookReview
I tried to listen to the audiobook and hoooooooooly crap...nothing happens. I was 45 mins in out of the full 3 hour book and he was JUST getting off the plain and complaining about mosquitos.
I red this book in 3rd grade lmao. In book club and I accidentally grabbed the 5th grade book instead of the 3rd grade book. Best mistake I ever made 😂 red it with my dad
Rest In Peace Gary Paulsen. Thank you for this gem.
wait he died?
Yeah friday the 13💀
Hatchet is the better book i never see
I remembered when I was in middle school and we had to read this book in class. I all was wanted to read it again, because I never finished the story, and couldn't remember the name. There's an entire series. You should really read Gary Paulson's entire works
Me: *in middle school reading it in school and absolutely loving it, along with near the end of the year we are going to read a cool book called "Outsiders"

Yeah but, it's kinda annoying cos it's just, divorce, secret. No one I know likes this book (no disrespect tho)
Me too
It took me 5 weeks

I feel like reading this book as a kid and watching Lost growing up is the reason I love survival stories so much
I have no Idea when I read it, but this is one of the few books that is so embedded into my mind, I still remembered some key parts.
For some odd reason lately it popped up in my mind. And I finally found it again.
This was a great book I read it a few years ago and still love it
I read all of them and loved em
The shelter in the video is almost exactly how I pictured it.
My 5th grade teacher made us read this and write 60-80 page book report the hardest project i’ve ever done in my life i am now in highschool and still have never done a project near as hard as that was the book was amazing though, i love that teacher!

I remember being so excited about finding Brian's winter which is just an alternate tale where he doesn't get rescued
You know there’s a sequel right?
Please please make more of these videos for texts that 4th and 5th graders read!!! It was a hit with my library lesson!
After reading the book in class I went out of my way to find and read both the sequels - one a hypothetical “what if” story about Brian needing to survive the winter, and one about Brian’s return to society and his realization that he prefers life in nature.
Brian's Winter and Brian's Return. Amazing books.
in the book they use a lot of details, and that’s how i remember every single part of this book 😅 the details make the book so interesting!
such as
About the book Hatchet, the part of the book where he goes underwater into the submerged

quite a psychological thriller for a young child. They had us read
