There were a lot of big name artists that went completely broke during the 90's when album sales were at all time high. I wouldn't be supriced if there were multiple of todays stars that are close to being actually broke or heavily in debt. They need to portray an image of success, which costs money. Streaming pays very little, so much of he money comes from brand deals, merch and tours. During worst of the pandemic they couldn't properly tour, but they might have been on the hook for a lot of the tour costs if one was planned. Cost for venue reservations, any personel they were going to have like musicians, dancers, audio engineers, etc. They have property, but not as much or as valuable as people might think. It's supricingly easy to loose extreme amounts of money in very short time.

Alotta people in the indie sphere are also announcing tours left and right, which I do like because these are artists that will play the smaller venues and clubs and will be cheaper and more intimate. However, because EVERYONE is touring, part of me worries that the many mainstream tours coming up will pull potential money from those smaller artists. However However, these smaller artists are able to interact with their audience in a more genuine way because they aren't super huge audiences so maybe they will benefit from this as they have their own dedicated stans.

@@1-1-1-1 I never said any of that, I said the person made a stupid generalization, bad albums certainly exist, but the good FAR outweighs the bad. And yes, most artists are looking for their album to be a huge hit, most of the time, it’s the label who makes them put out a whole album, or in some cases, stops them from putting out an album in fear of taking away the heat the song has at that time. And also, bc albums simply make more money, and it also helps the artist get out of their contract quicker, which they would want to, if they ever wanted to leave their label, whether it’d be bc of an exploitive contract, terrible management, you name it. Basically, album(s) = get out of contract = closer to getting away from that label if you ever wanted to leave or go independent. it also equals more money for the label, which is why we’re seeing everyone put out 1001 vinyl variants. Artist gets paid based on how well their music does, more album(s), more money. Touring also is a good source of money for the artist, as most of the money from said tour, goes to them. Unlike the streams and sales of music, which a decent amount goes to the label. Sorry for the tangent lol

Sorry, but Sabrina Carpenter shouldn't be a "thing". Suddenly (out of nowhere) shes an A-list singer/songwriter SOLELY because Taylor Swift told her millions of followers that they "should" like her. this makes sense with the exception that touring is historically not financially lucrative unless you‘re selling out a good amount of shows. it‘s also weird that they‘re all releasing in march and april. it always used to be august through november and maybe, circling back to touring, that is so that these artists can all tour their album over the summer and maybe that‘s the reason all these tours are being announced before the album is even out. because usually it‘s album in the fall, tour announcement within a month or two after release, ticket sales and then tour starts in the spring of the next year. and the only person on that schedule currently (that i can think of) is olivia. so i can see how this is just speedrunning money, however, tours need to be selling out to turn a profit. and in the end, the artist is the person paying, not the label. and plenty of people hate touring because it‘s very mentally and physically draining.
laying it out like this has helped in some capacity but i can‘t get over the touring aspect. a lot of people releasing right now are famous enough to turn a profit on their tours tho so maybe that‘s just the answer

The ethics of these platforms and their training data are a separate conversation, but they can already put together coherent songs in their beginning stages now. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of these artists were being pushed to tour and release now before AI music takes off. I can imagine music tastes becoming more personalized, with people generating background music for themselves if they can't create it - then going to their favorite performer for a more complete show. That performer will then act as an influencer in other fields (as an actor, brand spokesperson, model, fashion designer, etc.) for supplemental income. The artists would make less money, but I feel like the US is the only country where music artists were given an extreme amount of money compared to artists in other countries.

Unemployment is at a 60-year low among all demographics. And for the 1st time in decades, average salaries are rising a bit higher than inflation, which is a good thing. Additionally, we have the strongest economy & the best recovery of all industrial nations.*
*Inflation is not just someone's feelings. There's a highly technical definition that describes it, & we're far from that definition. You are on a platform reaching hundreds of thousands of watchers, therefore you have a duty to avoid misrepresenting your opinions or feelings as facts. Otherwise, you run the risk of spreading false info.*
*Anyway, it's probably right to say that the music industry isn't currently doing as well as other industries, but I think the main reason for the numerous releases (& this is just my guess, not a fact) is possibly because a lot of acts have a lot of pent-up projects due to the pandemic that is only now coming to the forefront, & their timing all happen to converge on the same time frame.* 👍🏽

I LOVE Taylor Swift, but I agree with you wholeheartedly on the making too many variants of a record thing. She did it with midnight and I was annoyed then but now after seeing how many different ones she’s done with this new album, and putting one different track on each variant. It’s pretty annoying honestly. Like, just make one Deluxe Edition of the album and put all the unreleased stuff that you didn’t wanna put on the main album there. But to make people buy four different copies if they want to have the whole body of work of an album is outrageous. And I think she’s on thin ice, as far as losing some fans because of it. I know I’m gonna buy one version of the album when it comes out this week and that will be it. If I happen to love one of the other bonus tracks that’s on one of the variants that I did not buy, I’ll move on with my life and get over it.

I’m not personally too worried for the situation rn. These big music companies think that pumping out 100 albums & tours is going to make them the return on investment they’ve been waiting for the 4 years. But that’s not gonna happen because nobody has the money to pay for everything they’re putting out. Only super rich fans, or people breaking the bank are going to attend/buy a quarter of what’s being put out right now. Let alone regular fans.
I think these companies will be in the trenches for a while after this music boom, which will certainly suck for everyone involved, so ☹️

Prince, Michael Jackson, Tina Turner, Eurythmics, Journey, Lionel Ritchie, Madonna, Queen, David Bowie, etc. all putting out massive, legendary, career-defining projects all in the same year. Is there some sort of numerology behind this being exactly 40 years later?

I’ll compare it to 1984 in terms of big artists releasing albums simultaneously. But LEGENDARY? Nope. 1984 is a rough competitor. Today can’t compare to the 80s. Only will tell if this years music becomes “timeless “…

@@lessismore8533 I’m not one to determine what future generations make of this era of music. I grew up in the 90s so I think the 90s were legendary. There were equally as many people who thought pop music in the 90s was mid and unmemorable so it’s subjective. Maybe kids in 2044 will look back at 2024 as the best year in pop the same way I look back at 1984 or (in my lifetime) 1999.

I LOVE your videos! You explain everything perfectly.
This year has been my BEST year in terms of music discovery (the Grammys in 2025 are sure to be interesting!). However, I do think that there might be a potential "music boom" every few years, where everyone would release songs simultaneously. This would overshadow new artists, as record labels might prioritise quick releases over artist development.
Festivals are the best (+budget friendly) way to support my favourite artists AND discover new music. I do believe that record labels should plan out artists touring together to enhance the experience.
The current saturation of music releases might lead to future issues regarding royalty payment regulations between labels and streaming services.
Overall, while I am thrilled with the abundance of music, I hope the industry finds a balance to nurture both established and emerging talents while ensuring fair compensation for their work.

Thank you for saying this is all overwhelming. I listen to a lot of indie and more obscure stuff and it's the same in those genres too. It seems a lot of artists are releasing material to just be releasing it and the quality suffers as a result. The tours are overwhelming too. I get discouraged because there are so many artists I want to see live, but it's impossible. I usually have to travel at least 2 hours to see a show (and I live in a midsize city, not a small town), so the cost of attending a concert ends up being way more than the price of a ticket. 😑

So naturally to keep up with bills we tell ourselves need work harder and pick up a second job or 2. For artist's , celebrities and music labels its no different. They got bills and expenses to pay. So in this case, the natural thing to do is to make more music, tour more, sell more merch & Vinyls.

The tours happening at the same time is easily explained by the end of the Covid pandemic lockdowns. Before this a lot of artists held off possibly because their label wanted them to release an album during a time when they can more reliably tour the world, as opposed to dealing with unexpected lockdowns in 2021-2023.
Another reason? The US election is happening late this year. A lot of these artists would probably prefer to get their main album promo time over before that.
