Prince Harry has visited the base of 42 Commando Royal Marines in Devon, in his role as Captain General Royal Marines. He then went to Dartmoor to meet members of the Commando Training Centre and see a recruit troop finishing their final test - the 30-mile march.

Whilst presenting newly qualified Royal Marines with their green berets, Prince Harry told them: “I’m fully aware of how lucky I am to be wearing the green beret without doing what you’ve done." Not all members of the RM wear the Green Beret ie Bandsmen and women so I think he should wear the same as them not the Green Beret unless he wins it in the correct way it cheapens the Green Beret in my opinion Its wrong where will it end if he becomes a figure head for the Victoria Cross association will he wear a VC its the same thing has not earned it should not wear it
@@Jeffybonbon Given you are not a Marine (I presume) and that those who ARE Marines are happy for him to wear the uniform of Captain General which includes that green beret. His Grandfather was hugely admired by the Marines and never once did Bottom Field and yet wore that beret. So why are people like you so keen to take offence. Too many P.O.Ts about (Professional Offence Takers).
I can only say I know Marines who are not happy about this I am not sure his Grandfathers time there was a Bottom field test I don't have the knowledge when the Commando test came into the Marines I think the first Commandos were British Army But the Marines took over the role Not all Royal Marines wear the Green Lid I don't think the Band wear is so maybe Harry should wear the same lid as them until he passes the Commando Test I admire the RM a lot But there is a principle here maybe Harry could join the RM Reserve and achieve the Green lid out of not because his Granny is the Queen

There is nothing wrong with Honorary positions But in my opinion they should not wear some thing on there uniform which others have worked hard to get Prince Charles never did P Coy either but he wears the Para Wings I have ex marines as friends and they feel the same as me It wrong in my opinion If you notice when prince William was married he wore I think the Irish guards uniform but he wore a blue sash to show he was a royal prince no other guards offices wear the blue sash as he is not a serving officer Harry should not wear the Green Beret as he has not earned it nor is he a serving officer have you noticed his beard again he is allowed a beard because he is not a serving officer Harry should put himself forward and do the Commando course he is young enough and when he wins it he can look a marine in the face and say I earned it too Its a Brotherhood and if he is not in the brotherhood he should wear something else

Royal Marines, hello from an old U S Marine. I know that no one there now will remember this but. We did some training with you Royals back in the early seventies. We ran your Tarzan course there at your training camp. To include the underwater concrete culverts and the six mile run I believe it was. You Royals are great to be around, God speed to all of you from America! USMC! Oohrah

That bit at the end with the dad and son. Huge respect. I worked for the Royal Navy on two occasions at RNAY Fleetlands, Gosport. I was a civilian worker, an aircraft engineer , working on Chinooks. I met several marines in my time down in Gosport, Portsmouth and Gibraltar and a retired marine was my neighbour in Gosport.

To those saying he should remove the green beret let me remind people he was INVITED by the RMs to be Captain General and therefore has the right and by implication their permission, to wear the uniform of Captain General which includes the green beret. Has anyone noticed he does actually sport a different beret badge? Did his Grandad do Bottom Field or a 30 miler? No but he was highly respected as a war veteran and for his Royal position. Same goes for Harry.
It seems that wherever you go on social media someone will find something wrong with someone or something.
If the RMs are OK with it then anyone else can jog on. All the people looking for something to be offended about need to sit down, have a quiet word with themselves and jog on ... I suspect that quietly Harry has said he WILL do Bottom Field, Tarzan, 30 miler and all the rest just to shut the whingeing Mongs up ...
I don't think anyone in the RM would have much say in this issue If the queen says my Grandson is going to be a marine he will be a marine I hope he steps up to the mark and do the course I'm sure he could do it

Anybody who has been through Sandhurst is going to be very elite. He even did his training for the apache. There is no way they would risk him being up there if he was not capable. Not every Royal achieves these things probably only the elite.
His achievements before being honorary were impressive. Officers in the Armed services lead by example and never are they expected to be leading from behind.

I really hope he lives to my own expectations as a Warrior Prince and King in the future....Today very few Royal nobility can call themselves as combat veterans in the world. This man has served in the Afghan and Iraq era as I have. I like that in every man or woman who did serve along side of me to support me or in combat supporting me as just an infantryman doing the messy business of fighting. I am just a Yank from the States. I respect him as a veteran and an equal as a combatant in his tasks when he was in active service in your British Armed Forces. I am sure he did save many American soldiers when he was in Afghanistan flying combat support missions directly or indirectly. For his service to your nation and mine. I have nothing but respect for what he has done.

Andrew flew helicopters during the falklands war, prince phillip served on a destroyer during WW2 and William flew search and rescue helicopters so our royals do have a tradition of military service. Even the Queen was in the army during WW2, a truck mechanic, very limited service but still a member of the armed forces.

@@si0054 I grew up near Camp David which is the U.S. President's vacation home and I heard from somebody who worked there in the late 90s that they would do just that when the Clinton's would visit during the summer, according to the same person in the fall Hillary expected there to be a lot of leaves on the ground and if there weren't that many they would have to go collect bags of leaves from the surrounding area to put on the ground.
I can't verify if it is true or not but this is what I was told by someone who said they worked there while living in a town 20 minutes from the place.

Britain needs special operations and Royal Marines, Para and 63 signal squadron need to be part of that.

@@geezerme5628 Not sure what means, other than the recon part, and USMC Recon does joint training with the recon and surveillance squadrons of the UK as well. Notably the 15th MEU in the last few years. Got a shirt from them, great lads. Their recon is much like ours, underpopulated and underfunded.

Harry should have been trained to achieve his Green Lid. He is the figurehead so let him attempt it as many times as possible. They should have got him doing pull-ups and ruck marches from when he was a boy to fulfil this role. imagine the respect he would get from such an achievement.

Very well done to all the lads for completing their Commando Course. It's a huge achievement, but I agree with most of the comments here that Prince Harry should not wear the Green Beret until he passes the course himself.
Technically, he can. He is after all as stated, the Captain-General. Similar to presidents being the Commander-in-Chief making decisions even without significant military experience...
