@jdisrael7607 your take is so grotesque. You don't know what God decides as retribution all those people could be innocent as well as not ..if anything this is the devil at work in this world, the drunk driver is under the influence of something ungodly, the spirit of drunkenness.. we live in a world where good and bad things happen but it's not for you to say any of those people are guilty so God caused a drunk driver to execute his judgment.. all those people could be God fearing righteous living people ..likelihood it might not be but don't use God as justification for this cause you don't know the heart and life of any of those people ..

One of the problems is the sentencing guidelines. You combine that with "slick" lawyers, and sympathetic jurors you get in reality no sentence. This is why I have always believed the victim(s) should have an input into the sentence and not leave it to a judge alone. In your case you should have under the law been able to tell the judge a minimum sentence which the judge had to accept. You do that and you will stop a lot of crime. So sorry for your loss. You live with it every day. God Bless you all.

Everyone is saying the drunk driver should be in prison for life, and I agree. However, penalties for killing people while driving drunk are very low. My neighbor's daughter was killed by a drunk driver who had no license (due to prior offenses). He hit another car, as well and that driver was a witness so the facts are facts. The drunk got out of his car, looked in the window at the young woman he'd just killed, and took off. So it was also a hit and run. What was his sentence? 5 years. For driving drunk without a license, killing a young woman, and leaving the scene. He killed her, and destroyed her family. He won't even serve the 5 years. This was in MA.

Folks are debating why it "seems" like drunk drivers survive the accidents they cause often. Well, this dude had a prior DUI & shouldn't have been driving. Same for the person who hit my own Mother, God rest her soul. To this issue of the DUI perp surviving accidents more often. There is also a theory that even if drunk drivers are injured, they are less likely to die from their injuries, since alcohol helps numb the body’s physical reaction to trauma. The theory revolves around the idea that it is the body’s response to the injury rather than just the severity of the injury that determines whether an injury ends up being fatal. Research at the University of Illinois at Chicago supports this theory. A study of 190,612 patients treated at Illinois trauma centers between 1995 and 2009 found that patients’ mortality rates decreased as their blood-alcohol content rose. At the highest levels of intoxication, mortality rates plummeted nearly 50%. When physical trauma happens, the body releases chemicals that slow down the healing process. Researchers believe that alcohol acts as a buffer and prevents these physiological reactions, thereby preventing fatal complications.

I am a recovering alcoholic and have been sober for a year. I have driven drunk numerous times and I thank God every single day that I did not kill or hurt someone while doing so. One day I decided that enough was enough and walked into my first AA meeting. It was the best decision I have ever made in my entire life.
I now have become proactive in my own recovery and involved in assisting in other peoples recovery. I plan on pursuing a complete career change as a substance abuse counselor.
This is a plea to everyone out there reading this who still has a drinking problem and finds themselves behind the wheel while drunk: YOU CAN RECOVER. I couldn’t imagine ever giving up alcohol and now I realized that MY LIFE IS AMAZING WITHOUT IT. I now NEVER EVER have to worry about destroying my life and/or someone else’s as a result of my drunk actions anymore. It is not too late to make a change.
You can either give up everything (your life) for one thing (alcohol)…….. or you can give up that one thing for everything……….. only you can decide.
