And to improve yield growing on paper towel use hydroponic nutrients. Better growth, nutrient density and yield.
3 part Masterblend is all I use. 😉👍
That's true, though I don't grow microgreens hydroponicly so I can't tell 😅 So thank you for your knowledge!
i was wondering about that. perhaps "life in a pot" could run another test using paper towel and nutrient. i'm interested to see the result.
What are the hydroponic nutrients?
@@josephmoses359 Most of the time... it's chemicals O_o
I rather stick to organic soil... it may need a bit more care, but at least you know you are eating natural.
@@2bRealist Organic soil is nothing but chemicals though
Clear instructions from planting to cooking without any bells whistles and cheesy shots of kids and cats. Thank you!!!
Thank You very much! I am pleased that You like the video. Though when I am recording outside, there are some cats roaming around here and there 😀
There's absolutely no problem with cats tho!
The difference between the two is that for the seeds on the paper towel, once they ran out of nutrients contained within the seed, the sprout stopped growing. The sprouts planted in soil were able to uptake additional nutrients and keep growing. If you added hydroponic nutrients to the paper towel side a few days in, they would have kept growing as well.
That’s correct 👍🙂
I love how you use any and everything for microgreens, I never would have thought of using either corn or lentils. Great job.
Thank you very much 😳
There are more plants you can grow microgreens from, than just these popular ones. I was amazed myself when I tried corn or even onion microgreens for the first time. I live in an area that doesn't allow me to grow outside all year round, so this might be an idea how to grow some "veggies" on your own during the winter, or even all year round if you don't have backyard or if you live in appartement. Or... If you just simply love microgreens 🙂
❤❤loved it.
This was the most direct, easy to follow and short video I've seen-I have such a short attention span, so thank you LOL! I can't wait to try this out!

wow its more better on soil more plants.. thanks for sharingn
Great video and I'm going to try that. Thanks very much.
I know this is for microgreens but thought I would share what I do for sprouting seeds to grow. I layer either paper towels with coffee filters or peat moss with coffee filters. The roots don't stick to the coffee filters like they do paper towels but they don't have the absorbtion of paper towels and the seeds will be too wet with just coffee filters. Works great.
That sounds reasonable due to coffee filter being more dense than paper towel. Thank you very much for sharing Your way of germinating seeds! 🙂

@@gloriagonzaga5349 ☺🍀
True, and you can wet the paper towel with, or feed your microgreens with a natural organic plant food supplement that you can make right at home yourself.
Nutrients in the soil is why the sprouts in the soil have a higher growth rate than the paper towel ones. Its not magic! The soil has a higher mineral and nutrient deposit ratio. Paper towels don't come enriched with minerals. 😑
But manufacturers that want you to buy regular bags of THEIR potting soil will never tell you that! Just like they'll never tell you their companies will cut corners, and enrich their potting soil with chemical-based fertilizers, or less desirable fertilizers🙄and they won't tell you that over time rebuying THEIR bags of GMO potting soil adds up $$$ and isn't very frugal.
Again, its not magic, its just simple agriculture science....
...But science that you don't understand fully tends to look alot like magic.🙄
I prefer the soil method, sometimes i use hotwater to sterilize the soil before using. Also if using the paper towel method perhaps try to find organic or unbleached paper, as most paper towels are highly processed.
Thank you for advice! I prefer the soil method too 🙂
Are you boiling your soil for 5 minutes?

could you do a video looking at the reuseability of soil for microgreens, so compare the yield of a tray of soil after the first, second and maybe third usage to see how the nutrients depleat? I think it would be quite useful to calculate the cost of soil over inert mediums?
Hello, that is a pretty interesting idea. I will try to get to it when the main growing season is over, as I am pretty busy right now growing all the plants outside. Thank You for the suggestion 🙂

Thank you very much for this very instructive video. Before I start my experiment, I have some questions.
1) Do I need to poke holes in the bottom of the plastic container before placing the paper or soil in it?
2) How often should I water them?
3) How long should the weight be on them?
4) Is it important what kind of soil I use?
Thank you very much in advance for your answer.
Hello,
1) No You don't, but You will be more careful about watering. If the soil becomes soggy, seeds/seedlings will be very prone to rot.
2) That depends on the type of the soil, it's drainage properties and ambient temperature. Generaly every other day, but I suggest You check the soil daily. As those seedlings grow bigger, they will drink more water.
3) Until You have the feeling that all (or most) sprouts reached the "roof" of whatever it is You are covering them with.
4) Yes it is, light potting soil works very well, microgreens don't need a lot of nutrients to grow, so airy well draining properties are more important for them.
Also, the amount of microgreens will determine how often they will need watering. If You are worried about overwatering, I suggest You only water them by sprinkling (or spraying) water on them daily. Just to keep the soil moist. That's how I do it in plastic containers without drainage holes, especially when they are just sprouts.
Thank You very much 🙂
I got my answer here for the holes ...thank you
thanks.

Thank you for posting. I've watched many of the these growing mico greens videos but no one ever says what is done with the soil after harvest. If someone doesn't have a garden outside what is done with the dirt? If it's reused what is it amended with? How many times (seasons of seed sprouting) can be used before tossing out the soil (?) or adding nutriments? Also, when soaking in water can that water be used to water potted plants rather than tossed down the drain?
Hello, You can reuse the soil as many times as You want, just mix it with fresh potting soil or add some compost. Microgreens won't really use all the nutrients in the soil as their life cycle is very short.
Yes, when You soak the seeds in water, that water is still okay to water other plants with.
I hope I understood that "soaking in water" question right, if not, let me know.
Thank You very much 🙂

Hi can liquid organic fertilizer be used to do the watering for both or say the paper to boost growth?
Hello, I've never used fertilizer to boost microgreens, but I think it can be used. Give it a try 🙂
Soil provides nutrients and you can provide water soluble nutrients to the paper towel grown ones also. Do that and then compare the results.....
That is correct. I may get to that in the future, thank you for an idea!
Nice one. Which tastes better though?
I didn't notice any taste difference.
Thank you 🙂
Im new to microgreens but want to try to grow my own with flaxseeds and lentils. I can't find this answer anywhere. After you clip them to harvest, can you grow more from the clipped ends like how you do with wheatgrass? Or they wont be as nutritious & you have to start a new batch? If they do regrow, how long before you can harvest thenm again since they are already partially grown, like another 8 to 10 days?
No, they won't regrow. The seed puts all it's energy to those first leaves, when you cut it, there is no energy left to regrow. You would have to let them grow bigger and then harvest shoots, but those are not microgreens. Even these are quite big 🧐
@@Liap Ah ok thank you so much!! I thought microgreens just meant like "unmatured" greens or like "baby greens" haha. So I thought if you let them keep growing but cut them before they matured, or grew too big, then it would still be considered microgreens. But I see, all the nutrition is in the first sprouts from the seeds!
I thought it was like wheatgrass and you could regrow it like 2 or 3 before they lost their potency lol. Thank you so much for answering! Im subscribing just for your kindness & responding!
The paper towel method seems less messy too 😄
Well, yes. Sometimes I get some soil particles in the shoots. Not a problem for me thought 🙂
But you are right, paper towel method is "cleaner".
Do you need to spray water in between days?
Yes, especially the paper towel. Pretty much daily.
Wow congrats sir you are monetized
Thank you 🙂
What are you doing the coconut soil afterwards? Can you use again or use as a compost in your garden?
I mostly reuse it as a part of soil mix for containers, seedlings trays or pots.
@@Liap thank your answer 🙏
Thanks for the video. I have one question, I had made the growth process and when I ate the microgreens I felt them bitter and fibrous. With the cooking process the microgreens will be soft and not bitter? Sorry for my bad english
Hello, if You want to eat microgreens raw, I suggest You harvest them earlier than at the stage I did in this video. They will get more fibrous as they get older. And yes, stir frying them and seasoning with salt will make them much easier to chew and they will also taste better.
Thank You 🙂
Nice video, the background music was annoying but the video is beautiful. Thanks for sharing
I will be more careful when choosing music for videos. Thank You very much ☺
❤
Do you have drainage holes in your trays or is it not necessary? Thanks for the informative video!
It is not necessary for microgreens assuming you are not overwatering them 🙂
Thank you very much for watching!

Hi is it good to use compost to grow microgreens?
Hello, definitely.
I have the lentil but without the Outter layer... Its oragnge in colour.. Can i grow it??
Yes, as long as they are whole and not split, you can sprout them. Some companies even sell naked lentils for sprouting, saying their nutrients are better absorbed than the ones with peel.
How do you water them?
I spray them with water 🙂
Do we need to make holes for drainage in soil one?
No if You will manage watering well.
Do we throw away the leftover roots after harvesting ?
Well, that depends. You can mix it with some fresh compost/soil mix and use again.
I add it to soil mix for growing in containers.
Do you re-use the growing media or only used once?
Hello. Yes I re-use most of the soil I grow plants in.
I enjoyed seeing the comparison between growing lentil microgreens in soil vs paper towels, thank you. I actually have 2 tutorial videos on growing an indoor salad garden on my channel. I've grown a variety of greens in bowls of soil for years and years and our methods looks remarkably similar. How do you get the to grow so straight? Is it the weight? Thank you, Michele
Hello. Yes the weight will at first make then grow even (because some seeds germinate later than others) and when the seedlings are pushing the weight, they are becoming stronger, resulting in straight microgreens.
Thank You very much :-)
@@Liap thank you! This is helpful.
What kind of seeds are these
Hi a question for microgreens fans - can I dry my microgreens to store and use for tea? Please help.
Hello, yes you can.
@@Liap thanks
what is the type of seed?
The music!! Arg!
Sorry 🙂 Thank you for your feedback though.
I will try to choose backround music more carefully in the future.
what to do with the seeds? are they gonna grow again?
No, You have to sow new ones. The already used ones go to compost.
😍👍👍👍👌
Does it have to be special soil or the universal gardening one is enough? Thank you.
Hello. The universal gardening soil mix will work very well.
Thank you! I'm gonna try it.
🙏🏼
☺🍀
That was an awesome experiment. Now, maybe you can try the same test again with and without electroculture!
Hello, I've read few articles about that, but I am not familiar with the metod yet. Though, that might be the way to get there 🙂
Thank You for the suggestion!
Thank You, I am happy You like the experiment ☺
@@Liap You can do it really simply with a stick with some copper wire wrapped from the dirt up to the top of the stick. Outside I use 6 foot bamboo or longer, but you can experiment with smaller ones inside if you like!
@@RobertTozzi Taking notes 🙂
Thank You for the suggestion, I will take a look at it 👀
can we regrow them using the same root? if yes, how many times do we can regrow them?
Hello, unfortunately no. You have to start new ones from new seeds.
After harvesting can we reuse the soil or do we need to put fresh soil
You can absolutely reuse the soil 🌱
In tamilnadu this is called mulaipari ....it use in temple in function time
What lentil is best for microgreen?
How many times harvest?
Hello, you can use any variety of lentils for microgreens and also for sprouting.
One time harvest 🙂
I like video but the sound is confusing because in places your voice is covered by the music. I hope I'm getting it right.😊
Can u show cloth (instead of tissues) vs soil
If I get to that, I will. Thank You for suggestion ☺
Do microgreen sprouts regrow after harvesting the same ?
No, microgreens won't regrow after you harvest them.
After seeds have sprouted, and time for harvesting, can the roots be eaten as well since they have been sprouted on paper towels ?
I don't think they are unedible, altough we don't eat them.
@@Liap Thanks. Perhaps I sould not eat them as well, even though others have told me that I could. Cheers.
@@Liap What about mung beams that are sprouted without soil ?
@@peterbrown2882 sprouts are eaten whole as far as I know 🙂
@@Liap Thanks
Do they keep growing after you cut once?
Hello. No, unfortunately they don't.
Doesn't cooking microgreens kill a lot of their nutrients ?
Well, that depends, what nutrients do you mean? If you talk about vitamin C for example, yes. Vitamin C is destroyed with heat. But other nutrients are amplified. For example antioxidants.
I like to eat microgreens raw when they are smaller and stir-fried when bigger, like these were.
I grow everything in jars purchased on Amazon with success. No soil, no paper. Just rinse with water.
Can we reuse the soil for next cultivation??
Yes, I am reusing soil mix for containers constantly.
Mega. Ich zieh sie auch auf Erde.
Vielen Dank! Bodensteine! 🌱🍀 (translator)
How many time i can regrow micro greens?
Hello. After cutting them down, You have to start new ones.
Is it the lack of water, or the lack of nutrients?
Would it be bad to let them grow a little longer so i can make them into mock-noodles? Or do they become toxic/unedible after a certain period?
Some will get bitter tasting after the true leaves come in.
They won't become toxic, neither unedible. But they will definitely become more tough to chew.
What kind of soil do you use?
Hello. This was some basic soil mix, compost and coco coir or peat.
Do you let the beans grow again after you cut it?
Hello, they won't regrow after cutting.
@@Liap so what do you do with the beans after?
@@nomad-thisisgodsworld1757 You mean with the root and stem remainings? I compost it.
