As absurdly childish as it sounds to sue someone for saying you cheated at a video game, it's not. The dude literally built himself on his high scores. Saying those high scores are illegitimate is a very damning claim. It's a correct claim, but it's a damning claim nonetheless, and one anyone would fight against to the bitter end.

Karl is saying that you don’t need to rely on the credibility or authority of the source. Rather it is better to test it yourself (with oscilloscope) and see.

I think you are missing the point here. In the magic show people know what they are in to as they pay for their tickets to get fooled. Watching some one playing video game is different as you not expected him to cheat. Nevertheless he never went forward with his witnesses so it’s equally useless.

You cant *see* someone have steroids in their system, you need advanced blood work experiments. You cant *see* a race car use Nitrous Oxide for a boost of speed from the grandstands, you need to actually look through the car/engine to find the evidence.
The example isn't about paying to be deceived in a magic show vs watch someone play a game 🤦♂️. Its about realizing people *cannot* see things at a deeper level without further investigation, and usually the equipment to accurately analyze it.
You dont see finger prints on the murder weapon at just a glance, you'd never know the knife/gun you're looking at/holding was used to kill someone at the surface level. You need accurate equipment to actually *see* the prints, and even more equipment to pin those finger prints to a specific individual.
Thats what this comment is about, it has nothing to do with paying to be willingly fooled for fun whatsoever.
Further example: You took the OPs comment at face value, without actually examining the idea on the level it was intended for.
People can't be trusted, not because they arent trustworthy; but because their depth of understanding is grossly disproportionate to the level of depth *necessary* to evaluate these situations on a deeper level than our eyes can see. You cant see drugs in a humans system, you need blood work. You can't see evidence on a murder weapon, you need DNA.
You cant see germs or microscopic organisms you need a microscope.

Haruhi Suzumiya to summarize it: Apollo made multiple videos on this exact topic and collected money for a law suit, then just at the height of it pulled back because apparently his lawyer said it wouldn’t do anything. The money, which he collected from the supporters of his cause, was frozen at the time, but I don’t know if it still is. Since then he vanished and if I’ve seen correctly he has also deleted all the videos.

My favourite part of the lawsuits are his claims he started and grew a hotsauce business all on his own in 1980, despite being 15 years old at the time and getting the business from his father.

Best thing about that monitor specification sheet quote: The vertical scan rate the monitor can synchronize to is "60 Hz, within +/- 5 Hz". So 60.6 is well inside the specification, which allows 55 Hz to 65 Hz. So, the specification does not even claim that the monitor is not designed to display a 60.6 Hz picture.

There are some exceptions to the free speech and I don't know how it is exactly in US but defamation and spreading information that can be attributed to be spread to hurt someone brand, image or business can be challenged in court. Basically most entities don't care too much but it still could happen.
@shortythecat yes, one just cannot include every possible example of what can or cannot be a reason to fill a defamation suite, you could find reasons to argue for both in most cases and then you have to decide which overweights which in every particular case.
@@zrider100z The 1st Amendment says Congress (and by extension any governmental body) cannot limit free speech. You are still responsible for the consequences of your speech and people are free to ignore your speech. Defamation is almost impossible to prove because, as it should be, the burden of proof falls on the accuser. And even then, you cannot be sued for an opinion or simply stating facts the person doesn't like. There has to be provable malicious intent behind the defamation. Being wrong is not a criminal offense. When sued for defamation, usually the suer is looking to scare up a settlement because these types of cases rarely pay out with a jury.

The counter suits could be fun. Karl claimed he was genuinely distressed to some degree and I'm sure others have been as well. Twin Galaxies has spent how much money trying to help Mitchell through this. People have spent a lot of money because Mitchell refuses to let this go and continues his attack on people that question him.
It's very possible that a lot of people will band together to show Mitchell's malice had a negative impact or cost a lot of money and he will have to pay up. Or better yet, they can let the money go as long as Mitchell accepts the fact that all of his world records no longer exist and he can no longer claim he is a world record holder.

Ever since Apollo Legend removed all his videos, some people (reasonably) have skepticism that Karl will stay true to his word about never backing down. However, after thinking about it further, I think Karl is more likely to stay true to his word than Apollo was. Apollo Legend has a history of getting himself into a lot of drama, even before the Todd Rogers stuff, and has a history of approaching these issues in a less civil and less professional way than Karl. As Apollo publicly admitted after the DarkViper drama, he had dealt with serious suicidal ideations, and overall, just from the way Karl approaches his videos, as well as the fact that Karl has a wife and baby, Karl gives off the vibe that he is more stable than Apollo. That's not a shot at Apollo, by the way. It seems like Apollo was dealing with some emotional issues to some degree, and his decision to remove his videos on Billy Mitchell, Todd Rogers, and DarkViper probably was partially fueled by the idea that he needed to remove this drama and toxicity from his life. If Apollo's (removed) Twitter post from after the DarkViper drama is true, then Apollo is permanently done with RUclips, and is probably cutting out social media from his life too. It sounds like Apollo made a major decision for his own health. As long as Karl stays careful and keeps Billy videos to a minimum, and continues to approach the situation in the most professional way possible, I think Karl will make good on his word. Part of Apollo's downfall is that he called out too many controversies, which, even if he was in the right every time (which I don't think he was), is dangerous and ultimately led to his channel being kind of a drama channel. If Karl continues to mostly focus on speedrunning as a whole (as he is still doing e.g. with the Mario video), I think he'll be fine. I support Karl in this Billy situation as well.

the dumbest thing about this whole mess is he's devaluing his own achievement by behaving this way. How hard is it to say "that record I made was on a MAME cabinet set to the exact specifications of the game."? It doesn't change the fact that he's one of if not THE first person to accomplish that score. Move your record to the correct category, and if you really love the game, (and have that much money) go do it again on an official board. Behaving as he is now, lying all the way, only makes you look worse

Because of the possible manipulation, Mame scores have much higher levels of scrutiny so his videos would not be acceptable and even the direct recording is dubious as opposed to a camera facing the screen which is much easier to do and clearly shows the gamer. In addition to that people have analysed Billy's DK runs and believe it may be spliced due to the luck with the scores, there are random bonuses from the barrels and people have counted through many of the top level performances and Billy's bonuses are a good bit beyond anyone else's. He relied on this absurd level of bonus because his strategy wasn't good enough for the score and also, he had access to a genuine DK cabinet so he had no need to use MAME.
It's not that easy. He's in a bad situation no matter how you look at it. Admitting he played on MAME would mean he admits he deceived the public. Even then, just putting it on the other leaderboard would be completely against his intentions. Most importantly, him redoing his score *doesn't prove* he cheated back then. All it does is show that he has the skill *nowadays,* 15 years later when new strategies have been found to make reaching 1 million easier.

Imagine if (assuming he didn't completely fake a run), right when this all came out he'd worked with TG to get the run categorized correctly, or admited what evidence he had was all there was and was upfront about exactly how he ran it. It would still paint him as a skilled player whose original score might not hold up under modern scrutiny standards. Instead he came out swinging and lieing, making him harder to believe even if the original run was actually done legit.
As for running again, all I meant was for the love of the game. Anyone can be forgiven a mistake if they show they're willing to work hard to not repeat it. He could've chosen to still be great instead of clinging to an old, shaky greatness.

Remember when he sued over that Regular Show episode were they mocked him? The judge basically laughed him out of court. He obviously has some serious issues. Doesnt he realize the more he sues people the worst it gets for HIMSELF? Most people would have never known who he was if not for how he treats others. And if its praise he is seeking all he has done is show the masses what an asshole he is.
But this is a way for him to make people still talk about him. The biggest fear a narcissist has is that he will be forgotten. Look, he already has a bad guy image. There is nothing he can do or say to make people change their minds about him. The lawsuits are just another game for him and he plays his bad guy character really well. He pretends to be upset and takes it to court. (He probably knows he isn't going to win, but hope that the guy will settle for an agreement out of court and agree to his silly terms. That way he will get paid (at least more than a little), and he will be able to control the narrative.
It's kind of tragic, really. If he'd just left well enough alone after 1999, he would have been remembered for his legitimate achievements instead of for falling off the house of cards he built on top of them.

Karl hinted in the previous video that Guinness can simply be paid off. It is FAR more likely money exchanged hands rather than a legal threat.
When a multi-billion dollar company is the defendant then the suing party might actually find a lawyer worth his salt since the potential payoff is so big, and lawsuits like that can get expensive. Even if Guinness won it would still be a lot of money wasted and nothing substantial to gain from Mitchell. That's why companies tend to be spineless, it's all about the money

I know this is ... a few years later after this video was uploaded but I have a question; In the video you mention another video you created called "Guinness World Records Should Stay out of Gaming" that seemingly started the whole thing and I was curious to watch it as I want a complete picture of everything going on. Unfortunately as I looked I realized I simply could not find the video; Did you change the name, was it removed, am I just blind?
