his first parody was ANOTHER ONE RIDES THE BUS, a parody of Queen's another one bites the dust. He recorded it in a bathroom stall so that Dr. Demento would play it.
You're right when you say his lyrics are really smart, the line "M. C. Escher is my favorite M. C" he's not referring to an M.C like a DJ, Maurits Cornelis Escher was a Dutch graphic artist who made mathematically inspired art. A very clever line that goes over most peoples heads.
"""Bond, But No One Else In The World Gets Any Reference In Any RUclips Videos And Needs A Full Rundown Of Everything That Ever Happened Even Though It's More Than obvious, Ian Bond."""
He recorded "My Bologna" in the restroom of the school radio station when he was in college, it wasn't the first song Dr. Demento played of his, but it was the one that got things rolling. That was 1979, and was his first real parody, trust me on this one, I listened to Dr. Demento as a kid and it stole the show.
Dr Demento was awesome. I used to listen to that show all the time. I still have a CD of the greatest hits from the show. Fish Heads was the top song almost every week, lol.
Al's first song recorded and played on Dr. Demento was "Belvedere Cruisin'", a love song about the old family car, a black 1964 Plymouth Belvedere with red upholstery. Al owned that car when he went off to college and drove it 'til it quit working.
I have to give y'all some tips on this song. *tardy to the party* There's SO many excellent nerd references in this song and video. Take some time, read the lyrics, and look at who is in the video, like Donny Osmond. You will gain a whole new love and appreciation for this song. I've been a fan of Al's since the 80s. He never ceases to amaze me.
Honestly he is very gifted- his voice is pretty good - his writing is very very smart! He does great videos and look at all the people he gets to be in them!
Weird Al had many songs in the early 80s like "Another one rides the bus", "Ricky", etc. When he came out with "I love Rocky Road", I think people started to really catch on to him. But it was definitely "Eat It" that was what put him on the map, because Michael Jackson's "Beat it" was hot that year, so when this came on it's heels - you couldn't tell which video you were seeing initially.
No no no....he was big back in the 80s. He's been doing this for decades. If I remember correctly his first big one was covering Madonna "Like a Virgin" which he did "Like a Surgeon"! I saw him live my first time I believe in 1986....maybe 87. Anyway, I've got a good friend, whose a fairly big guy, almost as big as Jamel. Like you, he's a great big teddy bear! He has that "White N Nerdy" sweatshirt, and it is funny as all get out when he wears it. People give him the funniest looks (obviously they don't know Weird Al 😁)
His first big production parody was his "Eat It" parody of "Beat It." He's been doing parodies since he was in high school. There used to be a radio show called "Doctor Demento" where they played his songs (and lots of other weird songs). That was way back in the 1970s.
5:38 - No Weird Al has been doing parodies for 40 years!!! You should watch the following list: "My Balona" - Parody The Knack's of "My Sharona" "I lost on Jeopardy" - Parody of Greg Kihn Band "Our loves in Jeopardy" "Eat It" - Parody of Michael Jackson's "Beat it" "Like a Surgeon" - Parody of Madonna's "Like a Virgin" "Living with a Hernia" - Parody of James Brown's " Living in America" Rocky IV soundtrack "Beverly Hillbillies" - Parody of Dire Straights "Money for Nothing" "Fat" Parody of Michael Jackson's "Bad" "Smells Like Nirvana" Parody of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" "Bedrock Anthem" Parody of Red Hot Chili Peppers "Give it Away" "Amish Paradise" Parody of Coolio's "Gangsters Paradise" "Headline News" Parody of Crash Test Dummies "mmm mmm mmm mmm" "Gump" Parody of The Presidents of the United States "Lump" "The Saga Begins" Parody of Don McLains " American Pie" "Tacky" Parody of Pharrell Williams "Happy"
Weird Al did "Eat It" which was a tremendous hit before "Fat". Seriously, he was almost going to be "The Eat It Guy" if he didn't have another hit. He had a bunch of hits, and then he almost ended his career after a failed album... and then "FAT" hit, and he never stopped. His big hits since then have been "Smells Like Nirvana", "Jurassic Park", "Amish Paradise", and "White and Nerdy" (which he actually had to come up at the last minute after his intended big hit for the album was squelched by the record label, which is why he's "editing Wikipedia" in this video -- he's changing the entry for that record label to just read "YOU SUCK!" in big letters). The white people you didn't recognize in the video are: Seth Green and his action figures that he uses in "Robot Chicken", Judy Tenuta as his geeky girlfriend, and dancing behind him is none other than the whitest person Al could think of, Donnie Osmond. I love that Donnie's moves are clownish yet still expertly done.
@@domagojbatinic1526 Naturally, there was often a significant lag period (at least a year) between when the original song came out and when Al's spoof of it was released. In addition to the time needed to produce his video, he had to ensure that he had the authorization in writing of the songwriter(s), original artist, recording companies etc. and that all the legaI aspects were taken care of. No point in doing it if you are going to be immediately sued for copyright infringement, plagiarism etc. as soon as the parody is released.
@@domagojbatinic1526 That's before he was somebody. It's a little different when you are making a career out of doing song parodies. People are apt to get a bit pissed and litigious when you end up making money on songs that are at least 50% their intellectual property and they get nothing in return, but up until that point most of them will regard it as cute and flattering.
Can't believe nobody mentioned Seth Green (as the action figure collector) and Donny Osmond (as "back-up dancer"), both iconic "Nerds" in their own right.
His first was My Bologna, but his first real national exposure was Another One Rides the Bus after Dr. Demento featured it on his show. And now the American institution's retired, alas.

BHK1978 If you’re from the Los Angeles Area, his “fame” began in 1979 with My Balogna. But you’re correct, for the rest of the country it began a year later with the Queen parody
Weird Al's first was a parody of My Shirona called My Bolognia. Been with Al all the way. He is a masterful genius. White and Nerdy is probably how Al was at one time. He studied architecture, and you do not have to be an idiot to do that, but rather very clever indeed. Shout out too to Al's band, they have been with him from the beginning and are world class musicians. Note how Al never makes fun of the song, only the lyrics. Plus, although he does not have to, Al always asks permission to parody a song.
When this song came out I was amazed at how good Weird Al was at spitting rhymes. He not only wrote his own version of the lyrics but he did that rapid fire style too. Considering he isn't a rapper that had to be hard. I couldn't do it.
Shout out to Weird Al's band. They have been with him through the decades and are phenomenal musicians in their own right. They match all the musical styles of the songs being parodied. Great concerts as well. Al plays a mean accordion. Lol. He does a polka on every album that's a medley of a bunch of current songs at the time. Puts his own twist on things. One of his best is the Hamilton Polka. It's crazy.
There are so many references and subtle things in this song, that the lyrics are needed or at least a reference to the content. So many funny things, but if you don't understand the "nerdy" stuff, you won't get it. It's beautiful!
I’ve seen Weird Al in concert twice and have an autographed Even Worse album. He and his band are probably the most talented group of musicians you’ll ever listen to. They play *everything*.
Here's why his parodies work, he's good at them, usually the parody is pretty close musically to the original song. I guess what I'm saying is he doesn't half ass it.
I had a friend who saw Weird Al in concert in the mid 90's; it was a crazy show with props and big costumes and special effects. He also made a movie in 1989 called "UHF" where he takes over a TV station.
I'm glad you said "inlaw" cause I was like either Jamel is the blackest Asian I've ever seen or she's the most Asian black chick I've ever seen. I know all about being white and nerdy.
Wierd Al's very first song he wrote and recorded was "My Belona", a parody of The Knack's My Sharon. He sent it in to The Dr. Demento's show and everyone loved it. He then met The Knack after they played at his collage and introduced himself as the author of "My Belona" and they suggested that Capitol Records release it as a single and they gave Wierd Al a 6 month recording contract. In 1980 he wrote " Another One Rides The Bus" a parody of Queen's- Another One Bites The Dust. He preformed it on a TV show to really good revues. He formed a band after that and wrote the parody "I Love Rocky Road", a parody to Joan Jett's I Love Rock-N-Roll in 1982. He then wrote the song "Ricky" which was a parody of the song Micky and was played on the new station MTV in 1983. His really big break came when he wrote and released "Eat It" a parody of Micheal Jackson's song Beat It in 1984.
"So is that his first big parody that he did?" Yeah. Not like he parodied Beat It by Michael Jackson or Like A Virgin by Madonna when they first came out 20-25 years before anybody knew of Chamillionaire.....
I think his first big hit was a parody of the Queen song another one bites the dust, Al’s version is Another rides the bus. He is a talented musician and song writer & is AMAZING to watch perform Live
He had several hits before this. They didn't recognize Donny Osmond? This reminded me of two video suggestions: Donny and Marie Osmond- "A Little Bit Country, A Little Bit Rock N Roll" and Pogo- "Data and Picard"
Weird Al's first song recorded was "My Bologna" a parody of the Knack's "My Sharona" in 1979. Weird Al's first top 40 hit was a "I love Rock N Roll" parody "I love Rocky Road" in 1982. His first top 20 hit was "Eat It" in 1984. Dudes been killin it for over 40 years.
I’m assuming that the Donny Osmond cameo went over their heads because he was well before their time. Jamel, check out The Osmonds’ “Crazy Horses” to see young Donny and his brothers in action, back when they were the alternative to the Jackson 5. Peace ✌🏽
Besides Crazy Horses, also Hold Her Tight, that opening bass line, you can tell they loved Led Zep. It's really sad, the Osmonds were headed in a hard rock direction when the Donny and Marie show started and mom and pop Osmond pulled the plug on the band. They really were a helluva tight and talented band, it's a shame that they weren't allowed to follow their vision.
@@Lady_LC yeah, Steven Tyler and Jimmy Page, along with other respected musicians, really admired the Osmonds. It makes me angry when people dog them, because they were so talented. Most people who dog them don't know anything about them beyond their bubblegum hits. They actually put out a great concept album, The Plan, but it got ignored by the general public because it came out right when the D&M show started. Thing is, I liked them when I was little, but The Jackson 5 was my jam, lol! I didn't discover The Plan, Crazy Horses, or Hold Her Tight until I was an adult.
This is one of Weird Al's later parodies. I would have to say "I Lost on Jeopardy" (spoof of Greg Kihn's "Jeopardy") of the early 1980s was the first one to get significant airplay on MTV and other video stations.

He sent it to Dr Demento who played it and the listeners loved it. He met the Knacks at his college. Their lead singer introduces him to Capitol Records' VP, who gave Al a six-month recording contract and released the single. That was the start of it all!
He started to be well known at the beginning of the 1980s, and was really huge from the mid 80s going forward. It can be said that "white and nerdy" was the beginning of a big new stage of his career and a lot of new young fans got to know him through this song in 2006
Another One Bites The Dust, a parody of a Queen song, was his earliest parody. It appears on his 1983 self-titled debut album in 1983. His 1st single was My Bologna, a parody of My Sharona, was released in 1979.
Weird Al is a National Treasure. He has the unique talent for skewering a song, while still paying respect to it. If you haven't yet, and I've been really busy so may have missed, you should do "All About The Pentiums". It will be immediately recognizable.
I feel so freaking old. I knew every single reference in that video. I knew Seth Green, with the action figures, who slapped his own ass. Lol And I knew Donny Osmond, the guy with the weird dance moves. Lol Took me back.
Weird Al started in the 80s with Michael Jackson, Madonna, and other popular 80s artists. He's kept up with the times, doing parodies at the same time that the original song/artist is relevant. I think he started before the 80s. He was a regular on the Dr. Demento show (radio). I remember "Another One Rides the Bus," a song parody of Queen's "Another One Bites the Dust." He got his start with Dr. Demento before MTV.
First of all, a masseuse is a woman. A male massage expert is a masseur. Also I'd like to suggest two other parody masters from days past. Tom Lehrer was a great musical comedian from the fifties with many great songs of which my favorite is "I Got It from Agnes". And from the eighties I'd like to suggest Julie Brown. Her song "Because I'm Blonde" is absolutely hilarious.
Tom Lehrer is great. Poisoning Pigeons in the Park and So Long Mom, I'm Off to Drop the Bomb are some of my favorites. And from Julie Brown, Big and Stupid and Homecoming Queen's Got a Gun.
His first parody of a hit was "My Bologna", which he debuted live on Dr Demento in 1979. He first charted with "Another One Rides the Bus" in 1981. "Ricky" was his first single to break into the Billboard Hot 100 in 1983. "Eat It" was on his 1984 album "Weird Al Yankovic in 3D", and was probably his biggest parody hit until "Fat" in 1988. He has released literally hundreds of parodies over the decades, but his memorable rap/hip hop parodies are pretty much "Amish Paradise" and "White & Nerdy". Of course that's not counting his polka medleys.
His first hit was Another one rides the bus parodying another one bites the dust by queen in 1981. BTW the guy dancing in the background is Donnie Osmond from Donnie and Marie. They were a pair or Mormon kids from Utah who made it big in the 1970s
Weird Al is the OG of parody. His first album came out in 1983, but he's been writing parody music since he was in high school. One of his songs was played on the Dr. Demento Show on the radio in '75 or '76, something like that. The guy is a legend, that's all there is to it.
Weird Al has been doing parodies since back in the 1970's his first couple were My Bologna ( Done to my Sharona ), Another One Rides The Bus ( Done to Another One Bites The Dust ), I Love Rocky Road ( Done to I Love Rock and Roll ), Stop Dragging My Car Around ( Done to Stop Dragging My Heart Around ). Two of his biggest hits were parodies of Michael Jackson songs where he turned Beat It into Eat It and he turned Bad into Fat.
His first parody that earned him fame was "My Balona" it was a parody of "My Sharona" WAY back in 1978. He was even on a nighttime talkshow performing that one.
Weird Al's career has lasted longer than most artists he's parodied.

I like Donny Osmond dancing when he is dancing at the white board.
I wondered how many knew it was Donny Osmond? Lol! Jackson 5 was my first concert August 1971. The Osmond Brothers was my 2nd Feb 1972. I was 12. I don't admit that to many. ;-) They were our 70's 'Boy Bands'.
Aww damn... I was trying to figure out who that was. That was hilarious the way he was dancing. I did pick out the dude with the action figures.
Looked like Seth Green.
@@bustagutable Looking back, the Osmonds were too damn cool... The moves, the costumes, the music, the harmonies... The f**king TALENT!!
Women still swoon over Merrill... And he's like what 70?
@@Savatage1964 Is he still alive? Lol! Don't mean to chuckle. Guess he is still younger than Mick Jagger. Lol!

his first parody was ANOTHER ONE RIDES THE BUS, a parody of Queen's another one bites the dust. He recorded it in a bathroom stall so that Dr. Demento would play it.
No, his first parody was "My Bologna" (My Sharona), which was recorded in a bathroom.
ANOTHER ONE RIDES THE BUS was second parody
@@domagojbatinic1526 followed closely by "I Love Rocky Road"
Actually,it was My Bologna.A parody of My Sharona by the Knack
Listened to DT Demento decades ago.
You're right when you say his lyrics are really smart, the line "M. C. Escher is my favorite M. C" he's not referring to an M.C like a DJ, Maurits Cornelis Escher was a Dutch graphic artist who made mathematically inspired art. A very clever line that goes over most peoples heads.
most people only run across MC Escher when they go shopping for calendars on discount after New Years
I would have hoped that everybody got that.
Escher's "Stairways" is one of the most iconic paintings in the world.
al is the frasier of rap artists.
I remember it. I am that old too.
Al's first song recorded and played on Dr. Demento was "Belvedere Cruisin'", a love song about the old family car, a black 1964 Plymouth Belvedere with red upholstery. Al owned that car when he went off to college and drove it 'til it quit working.
Yep.
@@sandroabate I used to sing "Fish Heads" to my grandkids when they were babies!!
weird al is a genius he has done every type of music from rap to classical and pulls it off well. the dude nailed ridin dirty in geekese.
Donny Osmond, the epitome of nerdy, is dancing in the video.
A real throwback with Donnie Osmond dancing with Weird Al…
Weird Al's first single was "My Bologna," parody of "My Sharona.
It was released in 1979.
I have seen many many concerts and one of the best and most unexpected, was Weird Al. The dude can put on a show! Amazing live performer.
Thank you! No one mentions Donny Osmond dancing!
Weird Al’s first big parody was “Another One Rides The Bus” which was a parody of Queen’s “Another One Bites The Dust” from 1980.
Weird Al, Pricless. "Whiter than sour cream." I'm on the floor
Love the Tri-color Expos logo!
ABSOLUTE LEGEND!!!! love Weird Al
Honestly he is very gifted- his voice is pretty good - his writing is very very smart! He does great videos and look at all the people he gets to be in them!
"is that his first big parody"? omfg. wtah. I just can't.
Part of me died inside.
That made me ROTFLOL!
No reaction to Seth Green or Donny Osmond, though?
That wasn't even close to being Al's first "big" parody.
The Donny Osmond out-takes of this video is a must watch!!! ruclips.net/video/Vq6OncN6_Fo/видео.html
The sister spotted Donny
Oh wow! I didn’t realize those true white moves belonged to one of the whitest men alive!
Thank you, I thought it was Donny!
I think Al would likely blur the middle finger anyway. He tends to keep his content pretty clean.
I love Donny Osmond dancing in the background!! 😀
He was doing parodies since the late 70's
No no no....he was big back in the 80s. He's been doing this for decades. If I remember correctly his first big one was covering Madonna "Like a Virgin" which he did "Like a Surgeon"! I saw him live my first time I believe in 1986....maybe 87.
Anyway, I've got a good friend, whose a fairly big guy, almost as big as Jamel. Like you, he's a great big teddy bear! He has that "White N Nerdy" sweatshirt, and it is funny as all get out when he wears it. People give him the funniest looks (obviously they don't know Weird Al 😁)
Anther big one way back when was the parody of 'Eye of the Tiger', parody title was 'Rye or the Kaiser'
It's the thrill of one bite.
The title was Theme from Rocky XIII, Rye or the Kaiser was just the chorus.
SuprousOxide lol, i prob should have known that. I still have the original vinyl! Prob haven't had it out of its sleeve since the 80s though.
You should watch the following list:
"My Balona" - Parody The Knack's of "My Sharona"
"I lost on Jeopardy" - Parody of Greg Kihn Band "Our loves in Jeopardy"
"Eat It" - Parody of Michael Jackson's "Beat it"

Don't forget "I love Rocky Road" the parody of "I Love Rock and Roll" by Joan Jett
I love the Donny Osmond cameo
Did you know that that was Donny Osmond (He was famous when the Jackson five were famous) was dancing behind Weird Al 🤔
WEIRD AL got his start in 80s his parody was My Bologna, a parody of My Sharona
My Bologna was actually from 1979
@@domagojbatinic1526 Naturally, there was often a significant lag period (at least a year) between when the original song came out and when Al's spoof of it was released.
@@mushmorant9253 actually My Sharona was released in April of 1979 and Al's My Bologna was released as a single in December of 1979.
I thought his first single was “Another One Rides the Bus” (parody of Another One Bites the Dust by Queen)?
I love that Donny Osmond makes an appearance showing how 'White and nerdy" he is! 🙂
Man, Chamillionaire was probably in diapers when Weird Al had his first big hit.
That is not an exaggeration 😄
Talk about "ridin' dirty."
Can't believe nobody mentioned Seth Green (as the action figure collector) and Donny Osmond (as "back-up dancer"), both iconic "Nerds" in their own right.
His first big one was Eat It & then Fat but they weren’t the first ones he did
His first was My Bologna, but his first real national exposure was Another One Rides the Bus after Dr. Demento featured it on his show. And now the American institution's retired, alas.
My Balogna was the first. He had 3 or 4 others before Eat It including the Toni Basil parody “Ricky” which got MASSIVE airplay MTV. They played it to the point that everyone began to hate it lol
@@demonhoopa I always thought Another One Rides the Bus was his first big hit. Interesting. I remember seeing a video of him preforming it on the Tom Synder Show.
@@bookman7409 Neither Weird Al nor Dr Demento are retired. Al posted his Hamilton Polka video last month. He was planning a tour next year but not sure what's going to happen. I saw him on tour last year. Dr. Demento still does his show online instead of the radio.
His first one was probably, 'Like a Surgeon' when he parodied Madonna's, 'Like a Virgin'.
Thanks!! I was about to say that!! May have been Another One Rides The Bus though.
I was just gonna mention Madonna's version he parodied of like a virgin.
When this song came out I was amazed at how good Weird Al was at spitting rhymes. He not only wrote his own version of the lyrics but he did that rapid fire style too. Considering he isn't a rapper that had to be hard. I couldn't do it.
Chamillionaire gave him HUGE props for his Rapping
Shout out to Weird Al's band. They have been with him through the decades and are phenomenal musicians in their own right. They match all the musical styles of the songs being parodied. Great concerts as well. Al plays a mean accordion. Lol. He does a polka on every album that's a medley of a bunch of current songs at the time. Puts his own twist on things. One of his best is the Hamilton Polka. It's crazy.
Probably his first "hit" was another one rides the bus from queen's another one bites the dust weird al been around since the late 70s
if i remember right the first BIG parody Weird Al did was " I Love Rocky Road " his parody for " I love rock and roll "
Al’s first parody was of a Queen song; Another One Bites the Dust, called: Another One Rides the Bus.

this was even before Another One Rides The Bus

There are so many references and subtle things in this song, that the lyrics are needed or at least a reference to the content. So many funny things, but if you don't understand the "nerdy" stuff, you won't get it. It's beautiful!
First: My Bologna in 1979
Breakthrough: Eat It in 1984
I’ve seen Weird Al in concert twice and have an autographed Even Worse album. He and his band are probably the most talented group of musicians you’ll ever listen to. They play *everything*.
Check out his "Craigslist" video. He does a great Jim Morrison, and has the original keyboard player from The Doors, Ray Manzarek playing on it!
'Rocky Road' was his first song to get real airtime. 'Eat It' made him a superstar!
"I Lost on Jeopardy" was one of the first. It got him attention, even if the song it parodied wasn't as big as the MJ ones.
And the song has been mentioned on Jeopardy so many times.
Donny Osmond is killing it!!
The first Weird Al song I can remember on the radio was "My Bolonga".

I was just like, this man had a career for 30. Years before this song. Lol

This is one of Weird Al's later parodies. I would have to say "I Lost on Jeopardy" (spoof of Greg Kihn's "Jeopardy") of the early 1980s was the first one to get significant airplay on MTV and other video stations.
Dare To Be Stupid was one of his first biggest hits.
Dare to be Stupid was in the Transformers movie. The original, animated one, not the CG Michael Bay one.

In 1979 Al's very first parody that was recorded and released was My Bologna, a parody of My Sharona by the Knack. It was released as a single with School Cafeteria on the B side. He sent it to Dr Demento who played it and the listeners loved it. He met the Knacks at his college. Their lead singer introduces him to Capitol Records' VP, who gave Al a six-month recording contract and released the single. That was the start of it all!
anybody noticed at the beginning when Al approached the car, the guys in the car locked the car doors in a convertible? That's funny!
He started to be well known at the beginning of the 1980s, and was really huge from the mid 80s going forward. It can be said that "white and nerdy" was the beginning of a big new stage of his career and a lot of new young fans got to know him through this song in 2006
I saw him in concert in 1984 and he was already a big hit by then. He has been doing this forever. He did 'My Bologna' back in 1979.
Al has done an entire re-make of Hamilton with the accordion. He has zero fear lol.
I love the "just be a good human" t-shirt. If I could afford it, I'd by one. However, I support you in the way I can. I really dig your reactions!
