  • The aurora (northern lights) reached as far south as Texas last night-maybe calling them 'northern lights' is a bit of a stretch.
In the midst of a G5-level solar storm, where hundreds of gigajoules of magnetic energy was bombarding our atmosphere, people around the world witnessed a beautiful display of light and color.
I was lucky enough to have clear skies in St. Louis, MO, so here's a video with some of the footage I took.
There's a chance the aurora will reach down into the US again tonight (May 11, 2024), so don't miss it! If it's after that day, or you're too far south to see it (or too far north... some people saw it in Australia!), then hopefully my video will give you some idea what it was like!

I saw a *big* Aurora "event" once in my life: This was somewhere in the '97 - '98 year... I went to college in Northern NY & was walking back to my house one late night (late enough that no-one else was around..) I happened to glance up and the most amazing sky I'd ever seen. Even though it was freezing, I sat right down on the side walk, and just watched for quite a long time. It was amazing, and I'm so glad I was able to see that -- and I'm glad you were able to see it as well..
And yes.. Even though we can explain things with science, it is good to feel a connection with a power greater than us. I'm a protestant and feel the same way. Makes you realize how special we are in the universe. 🙂

Awesome. There's a good chance the luck continues for Saturday and Sunday nights. More "extreme" space weather is in the forecast. If possible, best viewing is outside of town away from light pollution sources. (any light scatters off moisture in the atmosphere above)
Perhaps an opportunity to position a remote camera in an ideal location.
eg: a 12+ megapixel raspberry pi camera with wide-angle lens.

The Aurora are beautiful and mesmerising. I was very lucky to see it in northern Sweden in 2002 kind of unexpectedly when I went for a dusk walk. Sadly I didn't have a camera with me, but that also meant I got to see it in full. At one point a curtain of colour came down and split in two, each side moving in opposite directions, leaving a clear gap between. Cameras don't really do it justice, though some of today's photos are spectacular!

It was my first time seeing it. I'm in Benton Harbor, MI. You saw what footage I got last night on Mastodon. That was my first attempt at capturing it. My security camera in the front yard alerted me to it being visible. I was preparing to head out to the countryside to get a better view, when it turned out that just stepping outside our house was enough. We live in a town but we don't get enough light pollution here to obscure it. It was visible here from about 10pm until 12:45am when the clouds moved in. Sunset was at around 8:55pm but I could not see it with my eyes until around 10.
I didn't plan this, but tonight I'll have a new Reolink camera to point towards the sky. It should be delivered later this afternoon. I'm also going to try to setup my dad's DSLR on his tripod to see if I can capture it that way. I think I'm done with shakeycam for now.

I saw it in Alaska, in August 1974. It light the entire sky. I watched it from near the top of the TV tower at Ft. Greeley. It had the entire rainbow of colors, and was so bright that I could read the signs scattered around the base, and I could see clearly for miles. It was a cold and windy night, so I could only stay up there for about 45 minutes. I only saw it once during that year. There were only three TV cameras on base. One in our TP66 film chain, and two RCA B&W studio cameras. I didn't have a climbing belt, and my things were still in transit so I had no film camera.
The local's response? 'Big deal, we've all seen them'.

Explaining Auroras? lol Took me a while to remember Chris' name tho LOL
So it's awesome to know I'm not the only one that follows Space Weather.... this was pretty nerve wracking right? Well if you had been following it as each flare happened it would have been terrifying ! lol I just relied on the MOST IMPORTANT CHANNEL I follow on here, and he gave 3 updates throughout Thursday, which still had me on edge.... I haven't been following Space weather for very long, maybe 3 years now, so this was the craziest I've ever seen.. AND the guy, Ben, who runs the chan I follow, Suspicious0bservers , has been following it for about 30 years I think he said, and this too was the craziest he's ever seen it.
But none of the aurora should have even happened! The only reason why we were able to see this so far south is because of the Magnetic Field being SOOO WEAK right now, compared to where it typically is. and this is because the Poles ARE reversing. But that has been kept out of the mainstream because it most likely WOULD cause chaos and panic... and thats a BAD thing (no matter how many Zombie movies, or End of the World movies we watch.... it would be terrible!!)
I was hoping you were gonna say that you plan on going out to somewhere with a bit less light pollution, and a great view of the entire sky, AND you were gonna do a time-lapse of the ENTIRE night (and have in the4 night mode that you mentioned) There's still plenty of time to prep for it ;) lol
I'm in South Jersey, and there's barely any immediate light pollution, but being about 30 miles outside of Philly and quite a bit of suburban sprawl- near me, even though I'm pretty far into the wooded area, any buit of haze, for, or cloud gets lit up. But it still seems to be better than what you're dealing with. - I just don't have much of a clean view of the sky :( (or a very good camera lol - I have a Galaxy S20 Ultra but I don't think it's got a great camera... but then again I've only ever looked at the pic on the phone's screen and not on anything much bigger...
I'll give it shot tonight- IF the clouds have cleared up by then... it's was completely overcast last... But unlike what you said, tonight is supposed to be really active too, I think. But I guess it's just up to timing :)
ANYWAY, I hope you get some more pics and video tonight and make another video for Sunday! See you then if you do! Be safe and have a good time :)
