I love how he’s always willing to explain the meanings and inspirations behind his lyrics and album titles. It’s so frustrating when the artist keeps saying Oh I don’t like to explain the lyrics because everyone can interpret them differently and blah blah blah🙄
Sometimes there's an uncomfortable sense of vulnerability that does into explaining your lyrics. I write a lot of music and sometimes I'll elaborate on my lyrics to the point where I explain every single sentence, sometimes I'll go a little bit into the metaphors, and sometimes I'm not really willing to share the lyrics' meaning at all. Because, again, there's that vulnerability.
Sometimes I have found out the real meaning behind the lyrics of some of my favorite songs, and it hasn't at all resonated with what I thought they meant. When that happens, I kind of wish I hadn't found out at all.

I know what John says about 'some days I have it and somedays I don't;. I am a writer and most days I don't have it. Frequently when I am trying to go to sleep these words start flooding into my head and I have to write them down. Or I may wake up and there is a whole poem/story in my head. I always keep pen and paper nearby. It is strange. I am published so it works.
David Copperfield i kind of got scared of that vibe a couple years ago. almost like i was getting too deep inside of me and really started feeling strange about it.
I understand what you are saying. When I first started acknowledging the words/phrases, etc. that would appear in my mind it scared me too. I thought I must have split personality. The words would 'bug' me until I wrote them down. But now after writing these things down for literally years and years I understand that they are just me. It is like when I am not distracted by daily things the words are noticed by me and it is time to write them down. Now I honor this part of me and I am glad I have this ability. If you look you will find a lot of people who are talented do it like this. It is common.

Love this incredibly gifted and talented singer/guitarist!! He is super humble and the state of his heart (loving and kind) shows in everything he does!

I was convinced at the time he’d met someone new and was shielding them away from the press. But You can’t keep a secret that long. LOTW is a truly great song, literally picks me up and throws me at the horizon, i love it.

I love the song Great Indoors, it was my anthem for a while. But It's also self-isolationist and only encapsulates one particular type of experience. I believe Slow Dancing in a Burning Room is the segue he made out of the idea present in Great Indoors' lyrical matter..

Really, for me John Mayer is one of the most incredibles songwriter in the World, but this song i don't liked. I think that he can release more better songs apart of this...
I agree, it's definitely one of those simplistic "dance around G C A D type-songs that I just don't think is really him.
Although, he's been with dead and company and his whole music stand point has sort of shifted after Paradise Valley and Born and Raised. I like to think of this song as on a sort of path back to the pop he use to play. Kind of in between, but on the way back, you know?
