    Hi Will, I've been watching all of your post hike videos and I really appreciate them as I'm sure everyone else does also. I love the little room you are filming in. I'd hang a green screen behind you and run videos of your hike while you are doing your reviews.

    Have adopted the Jardine philosophy in solo backpack weekend trips in recent years; though with the kids will take the heavier weight gear. I have go to 1 litre soda bottles, though I ran with the crowd and used Nalgene 1 litre bottles when went thru in 93.

    Like your video on water. My first section hike was SOBO out of Del. Water Gap. Spring was dry south of Wolf Rocks. Since than I carry too much water. Good to go lighter in June during 100 mile section out of Springer. Thanks for all your great videos.

    had to carry 14 liters twice on my Israel Trail thruhike (two stretches with no water for 2 days.)
    sounds really cool to hike around many springs and streams :)

    Just found your channel. This comment is for other newbies. Yellow water: in upstate NY we have a lot of tannins in the water from the coniferous trees. It's not dangerous. It just dyes the water yellow/brown like tea.

    Hey Red Beard...really enjoyed you series on the AT. A couple questions if you could answer or do a video on the subjects. You looked like you had everything dialed in during the videos. What were your experiences physiologically. Did you lose weight or were you able to maintain. What worked for you for meals/calories etc. How often did you need to take a zero or nero.

    Thanks for posting! Preparing my first section hike through MD Oct 2015 and you answered one of my big questions. I'll be checking out your other videos. Thanks again!

    @will wood something I like to do is carry a collapsable bladder that has a significant capacity - 2 liters or more. I use it to transport water to my campsite from my nearest water source, which may be a ways away. Most of the time this bladder rides along in my pack, empty and folded up, until I get to camp. Then I bust it out and can transport a gallon for cooking dinner, washing, drinking, and I'll have enough for breakfast the following morning plus top off my supply.
    Work smarter not harder!

    Hi will, im planning a section hike in sept from harpers ferry thru mayland. I watched your videos from the trail, and im glad you said that maryland was the easiest! Do you remember the water situation in maryland?
    Thanks
    Tara.
    Ps: love all your videos!

      Glad you liked the videos. As far as I remember the water situation was not bad at all. But if you don't have one I would recommend purchasing the 2015 Appalachian Trail Guide by David "AWOL" Miller. It will give you exact water locations and only costs about 14 bucks. Good luck on your hike!

      Thanks Will, I do have that trail guide and its awesome! I'm looking at purchasing a sawyer mini. I have a life straw and tablets. But the mini seems like a smaller lighter option. Thanks again for all your informative videos.

    Congrats on your Thru Hike! Great advice on fluid loading at watering holes. It always concerns me to not filter water, but that's just me.

      I have never used it personally but I saw some using it on the AT and I didn't hear any complaints.

    After hiking the AT between Hot Springs, NC to Devil Fork Gap near Erwin, TN during the summer of 2014 my personal view is to carry as much water as I possibly can. I hydrate at each water source and top off the water bladder. Why? I came through there during a period of low rainfall and all of the springs went dry except one at Jones Meadow and the pond at Mill Ridge. Even the ones at shelters dried up. Other hikers were leaving notes on the trail warning of the situation. I even notified the ATC office in Asheville, NC stating it was the worst I had seen it in 30 years of hiking the AT.

    How would you judge what kind of water would be drinkable or what would maybe need something to purify it?

    • @RedBeard0924
      @RedBeard0924  8 лет назад +1

      I drank from springs mostly and otherwise only at top of the ridges and mountains. If I needed I had my sawyer mini just in case

    I drink 100 oz of water a day even when I'm not hiking. 2 liters seems a bit light for a full day of strenuous walking. Am I wrong?

      Will Wood If you do JMT next, when are you thinking of running it? The "good weather" window is relatively small. I was planning a through next year (probably late July/early Aug). Maybe I'll run into you!
      Won't know my dates until I get the permits, but that's what I'm aiming at.

    Hey Will, ya I use those same Platypus water bags, they have a new, at least I think its new, water bags called the Platypus plusBottle. it is made to be more durable, im gonna give one a try and see if they hold up longer. Here is a link www.rei.com/product/768123/platypus-plusbottle-1-liter-water-bottle-with-pushpull-cap, Have you tried one of these? another plus is they weight less .08oz compared to 1.2oz

    • @RedBeard0924
      @RedBeard0924  9 лет назад

      Sweet I have never even seen these thanks for the link. I have been thinking about switching to Gatorade or poweraid bottles for my PCT hike because the platypus bottles just crapped out over time. I will definitely have to check these out.
