    It’s amazing how quickly these girls learned to master their instruments. If you saw them in their early punk days (‘78, ‘79), then you know. Charlotte was already a pretty accomplished musician when she joined, but the others were just learning how to play. What really made them advance quickly was when Gina joined. Gina is a top notch drummer, and was already on top of her game when she joined them in the summer of ‘79. Their original drummer was a mess, but Gina stepped in and put a fire under everyone’s butts. A band is only as good as its drummer, and Gina is better than most. Whatever limitations were holding them back previously were completely removed when she came into the picture. It’s just a shame what happened with Margot (their original bass player), but that’s a whole other story.

    • @Shikta-poobah67
      @Shikta-poobah67 Год назад +1

      @@krumplethemal8831 I always thought it was a damn shame how they completely turned their backs on their punk past. I totally understand the desire to succeed and to move forward once you’ve learned to play your instrument competently, but as evidenced by their first single from 1980 on Stiff Records, they were at their absolute best when they played in their trademark pop style, *BUT* with their punk edge still intact. It can also be seen in their appearance in URGH!, from right about that same time (summer/fall 1980).
      Don’t get me wrong, they were still great even after Margot became collateral damage and they went full on pop, but they were a lot *BETTER* just before that. I don’t know how much of that was because of the Margot factor, but since they have gone on record as saying that Margot was the one who wanted to stay true to their punk roots and the rest didn’t… I’m going to assume it was a pretty big factor.

      I don’t know. I’m in my late 50’s and I’ve had a bit of time to watch music change over the years and decades. It’s always a bit too easy and convenient to say that (whatever the present moment you’re in) is “the worst ever”. Every generation says that when comparing things to what came before. It’s all relative. Are things overall pretty bad today? I’d say yes, but I also would say that there have been times in the past that were even worse. The mid to late 80’s were pretty awful. So was the turn of the millennium period, when everything was dominated by boy bands, teenybopper pop divas, and Floridian rap-metal.
      The problem with today is that anything original or exciting is buried so deep in the underground that it’s almost completely inaccessible, unless you either personally know those involved, or spend hours on end scouring the internet for uploaded music… which kind of kills the excitement factor. What is obvious and on the visible surface is indeed atrocious to an unprecedented level, so I can see why so many people think it’s worse now than ever before… but believe it or not there *ARE* good bands making good music out there today. You just have to *REALLY* know where to look.

    • @Shikta-poobah67
      @Shikta-poobah67 Год назад +2

      Different times indeed. Those were my HS years (class of ‘84). We definitely had it better back then, though at the time most of us were bitching about how bad we had it compared to previous generations 🤣
      I mean, not all music was great or even good back then. There was no shortage of soulless garbage, but it seemed like there was a lot more to choose from than there is today. If mainstream music wasn’t your thing, there was college radio, and then there was also a big, thriving underground music scene (scenes - plural), with thousands of great bands putting out their own recordings. I know there’s still some of that kind of thing going on today. My son never fails to remind me, but it’s just not happening with the same magnitude as it did back in those heady days in the early 80’s.
      I’ll always be grateful for the times I grew up in, even if I was taking it all for granted at the time.

      Eh… I love the Go-Go’s, but the truth of it is that they were just in the right place at the right time, and they had the right level of ambition. There were plenty of other bands in the L.A. scene back then (not to mention many other scenes) that were just as good or better that wound up flying under the radar, just because of timing or not greasing the right palms.
      Don’t get me wrong. Like I said, the Go-Go’s were great and they deserved every bit of success they had, but there were so many others who didn’t succeed that were every bit as good or even better.

    Very early version of Vacation shown here. They obviously reworked it before they put it out. I saw them in Aug of 1982, by then, the Vacation album and the water skiing MTV video were out and popular. Never forget the roar of the young girls in the audience when they broke into that song. I was a 22 year old guy and felt a bit out of place there, but fondly remember seeing them at their peak. Funny, I remember Charlotte was 27 or so at the time and I thought, wow. She’s so old, haha. Old , but beautiful. Didn’t find out till their documentary that she had a major drug problem. Glad she made it thru.

      @Shikta-poobah67 Год назад

      Personally I thought they were much better about a year before this, back when they still had Margot on bass and still had their punk edge. They’re still good here, or at least better than most of what was passing for pop music in ‘81, but they definitely lost something special when they completely abandoned their punk roots and seriously screwed over their original bassist in the name of ambition. I have nothing against Kathy. She’s a good musician, a seemingly good person, and easy on the eyes… but Margot was a founding member, and in many ways kind of the soul of the band. The way they handled her dismissal was backhanded and messed up.
      Point being, they still could have had success with Margot and with their former edginess. Maybe not the same kind of massive mega-success that they wound up having, but they still could have made it happen. If you watch the various bits of footage from 1980 that are uploaded (URGH!, Peppermint Lounge, a few TV appearances), it becomes glaringly obvious that they already had the right ingredients for a hit single and/or hit album.

      “When Cool Jerk came out in 1977”? What? The very first thing the Go-Go’s ever officially released was an early version of “We Got The Beat” b/w “How Much More” as a 7” single on Stiff Records in the fall of 1980. There was nothing before that, except maybe some low quality bootleg recordings. If you’re thinking of the original version of “Cool Jerk” by The Capitols, that was way back in 1966.

    • @Shikta-poobah67
      @Shikta-poobah67 Год назад

      @@dynjarren8355 Well, really the lyrics are about the drawbacks of success. Terry initially wrote those lyrics, and though Jane tweaked them a bit, the gist was that at the time he wrote it, at the end of 1980, the Specials were at the peak of their popularity in the UK, and Terry couldn’t even go out in public without being recognized and mobbed by fans. And then there was the factor of the relentless UK press, who have always thrived on cheap sensationalism and generating hurtful rumors.
      I suppose it was all a bit prophetic for Jane, since that song ended up being what made the Go-Go’s a household name later that year. However at the time few people outside of West Coast punk circles even knew who they were.

Must’ve been some licensing issue.
