I haven't seen anybody mention what's likely the real reason for the bucket change: It's much, much, much easier to maintain. Designing buckets previously would've required literally hundreds of hours of planning, coding, testing, debugging, etc. with every single set release. Now adding a new set should be pretty trivial.
I don't hate this, but really it just seems like arena with the passives that are now weaker because less reliable keyword builds

Can't believe Regis didn't comment on the fact that the DH @44:40 had played 3 Relics at the start of the game but then still had an active Zephrys lined up, so no duplicates left... That's quite lucky... also right after Zephrys he just keeps playing duplicates, so he had drawn all the duplicates REALLY early...
I agree with the assessment that Duels was too "solved" i however disagree that this bucket change is a good solution. I'll acknowledge that it is A solution, but it's not one i personally like. I think you can have synergistic buckets, they just can't be too reliable, which they previously were.
With synergistic buckets you could make it so people are way more likely to get low quality synergy cards, say you're playing a deathrattle deck, the overall quality of offered deathrattle cards and deathrattle enablers would be much lower than it currently is and ontop of that, you could make it so whenever you do get some good cards offered, they might often be bundled together with some bad/mediocre cards to keep the overall power level in check.
For decks that don't have bad cards, like for example Relic Demon Hunter (because of there's so few relic cards and they're all good, especially together), you just lower the odds of those cards showing up by a huge margin. Maybe even make it lower if you run them in your starting deck, so you'd be more likely to get them if you didn't run any relic cards at all, making it harder to get the full synergy package but still possible on occassion with some good luck. With all of that said though, this change while not ideal in my opinion is probably still better than leaving Duels as is (or was).
Problem with that is that if you do solution like you proposed for relic DH people will literally just not play it, since they have 5% chance to have a good run, they'll just solve another deck that has 60% of going 12 wins if they hit the proper things. And then sure, there's no relic DH but there's other 3 decks that are solved. While purposefully lowering the chances for relics when you run them and purposefully adding chance if you didn't run them is lose lose situation, because you're literally punishing players for playing certain things, instead of giving them RNG you're giving them controlled abuse in the name of balance. It could work possibly if there was no way to actually find out the chances being skewed that way, but since that state would last whole 3 weeks it's only a matter of time when players feel cheated for having buckets shafting them on purpose.
It's Hearthstone, every 3rd card already does some random stuff, just lean into it and let the RNG be RNG.
@@maciejpuzio8069 Such events would happen rarely and you can't count on good players getting god send buckets, so even with good buckets someone could get 8 wins instead of their usual 4, getting carried by the deck, and that's okay. Someone would average at 7 and get carried to 12, sometimes you'd get shafted but that's okay too, its in small percentages. You want all the strategy? Honestly, don't play HS, there are better card games for that then. Besides, you watch Regis, he's biggest Timmy out there, and if you actually spend time with HS players you'd hear that they don't like RNG but at the same time each time a new RNG card comes out (sunwell) they jizz in their pants, so despite what people say, majority of them actually enjoys RNG and not 100% skill. If they really wanted skill they wouldn't be playing HS, but instead they'd be on ChessOnline, and that's a sad fact for anyone who's into HS but not RNG elements.
Listen to Regis at 22:50 , he wants games to feel surprising and unique, he's Timmy, not a Spike, he doesn't care about skillful strategic expression nor do most people playing Duels.
I'm not sure I said anything definitive enough to "disagree" with here, but happy to hear people's perspectives. I think I understand about 3% of how this works right now, so I don't really have a formal opinion yet. Still gathering information.
@@MrMrtvozornik Disagree, I like RNG, because make the games better, The thing with RNG is good when makes games different and players take decisions adapting to those things they can control. But What I understand from the previous game is, that RNG is bad wen make everything a coin flip, were you either lose or win, and there's were these proposition of buckets and the previous buckets were (In my opinion) really bad. Is fun not having control withing yours resources and still try to do the best with what you have. But I do agree with the First comment of this tread. This bucket seems to much anti-synergistic. Games look really similar to Arena. The reason I liked duels was crazy weird stuff and the meta kill it. But now, could be even harder to pull of something crazy because your deck will always be the same, random garbage and this coul make the runs feels always the same. Stills have one hope, expansion often comes with themes, so is probably more synergistic to focus in only one expansion. So your deck won't end like the one in this video.
I agree that this isn't the solution I'd have said was the best. To me it seems too far in the other direction. From too synergistic to almost absent synergy. In my opinion there is a middle ground that was not found and it does kind of take some of the fun out of it. I agree with Regis that I want every duels game to have some variety and not the sameness it was kind of feeling. But if the randomness and variety is very mundane and the decks feel more like arena decks (which I find very boring) then it's random but not fun. The change made, from what I've seen, makes it feel like it's going to be decks full of random things that have no attachment to each other and just barely feel like an actual deck. The amount of times in the video he said "A bunch of random stuff" or "This isn't good" when looking at all three buckets felt much higher than normal. That's just me.
I like the idea of this new bucket system, but I'm a fan of jank and having to work a little to find your outs, but the problem is that it makes big blowout cards so so so much better and more swingy. Not that it's all that different from "you drew your powerful card first so you win" scenarios that people ran into before, but at least there's some hope of that happening less often? At least until people figure out how to crack this system like they did the last one.

God, they need to find a middle-ground on the bucket thing. The old bucket system was *TOO* synergistic. This new one, is far far far far far too unsynergistic. They need to find some way to at least give a little weight to cards that might make sense, within those set buckets.
I think the biggest buff there is to duel's new buckets is that you no longer need to have all the broken op cards crafted to make a decent deck. You can run free core cards and with the new random buckets, you have a similar chance of getting a "themed" deck as anyone else
And have just as little fun as everyone else

This new bucket change is weird, I literally played a Mage run where I had 7 objections 5 Kel'thuzads and a bunch of other Volatile skely cards..... It was obscene

Even if the pure(er) rng solution for buckets is a drastic change I certainly find it refreshing. I'm willing to give it a chance and if it works out and cohesive decks are possible then great! If it doesn't work out then I hope it changes back some. Regardless I'm glad it's getting some attention.
Renathal in a bucket at 58:08??? How would that even work? I presume you'd just always start at 40 health but it surely wouldn't affect deck size?

I misread the title as Bulge King and got very concerned.
Guess this takes away the last bit of fun I had with Duels. Building terrible meme decks that get you to like 7 wins on a high roll.
I didn't care about constantly facing the same op decks, because when I got to beat one with a silly deck it felt so much better.
Should've just banned Daddy D and be done with it. Or only change buckets for paid Duels runs and kept Casual as is.
I'm not really a fan of this bucket system, it's a strange design decision to pivot to the opposite spectrum of how they work by giving you cards that barely even synergise with your deck. It's like I'm playing arena with extra steps which is effectively, who better high rolled on whatever garbage they got. It also means building a deck on any specific mechanic is a crap shoot at best now, which is what I particularly enjoyed even if I never won half of the time with it but at least my deck could turn it around unlike me playing a discard deck and getting like 3 buckets of random naxx and gvg minions
Bummed to see you didn't get a single Death Knight card from any of your random generation. I wonder if the class is turned off, so to speak, or maybe you just weren't lucky enough.

Echo cards can't be reduced below 1 as a rule now, to prevent that sorta stuff.
I hate the new card bucket logic personally. Makes netdecking better and building one yourself worse. Ie. Find a deck, thats refined and forces the right buckets is more valuable due to it now being much harder for you to keep a structurized deck with any synergy.

Honestly, I hate the new buckets. Feels like the worst kind of tavern brawls.
This makes duels way more fun. So tired of playing against deterministic buckets. I left constructed to have fun and duels became constructed...this change makes duels just crazy random and more fun. Hope this is the end to the toxic decks like relic and etc which woukd basically cheat to get controlled buckets. Gj blizzard!
Relic decks didn't really work after the balancing patch earlier. Relic hunter bucket with no relic cards a lot of the time

This is just Arena again but better and i appreciate that because decks are gonna be pretty bad but you'll get to see weord cards or unused and unusual cads pull their weight in this new Draft format.

I'm glad they changed the bucket system because the old version made decks too op. However, this is a very inelegent solution, devoid of any spark of creativity. Buckets based purely on sets?! They have thousands of cards, mechanics, tribes, keywords, themes, and other things they could base buckets on. Sets is a good idea for a few buckets, but they have got to supplement it with other types of buckets.
Most people here seem to disagree, but my duel buckets are actually better than before now
