    I lived near Houston and we were (and still are) huge Astros fans. They were so sad-sack up until 1980 and when they blew the three-game lead it was just a reminder of all of the past Astros meltdowns. To see them win this game, especially in L.A. against a team I absolutely despised as a young teen, was so cathartic.
    I believe that we win that classic series against the Phillies if J.R. had not gone down. He was filthy dominant in 1980.

    1980-81 was a good, yet heartbreaking era for Houston sports. The Oilers lost the AFC Championship Game that January, one game from the Super Bowl. The Astros lost the NLCS that October, one game from the World Series. Then in 1981, the Rockets lost the NBA Finals, two wins from the championship.

      @@romelovesdan I remember those very well. The '79 WS was possibly the most colorful one ever played. I think those yellow (PIT) & orange (BAL) unis are probably burned into my retinas. LOL! The "We Are Family" champs.
      I hardly watch anymore. I _maaaaaaay_ catch the occasional WS game, especially if it's a decider. The ridiculous time between pitches should've been treated as a cancer by MLB a loooong time ago. And I just don't have the stomach for all of the self-aggrandizing, especially the standing at home plate and admiring hits instead of running.
      If you're an Astros fan, you know better than anyone how costly that is. (not that any human on earth had to witness it actually happen to know how potentially harmful that behavior is to a team's success) Seeing George Springer preen & admire what should have been a triple, and instead, end up on 2nd base in the 8th inning of Game 1 vs the Nationals, thus not being able to score on Altuve's deep fly in the next AB, thus failing to tie the game that subsequently went into extra innings, where the Nats won, in a series Houston lost 4 games to 3, was the last straw. The egomania finally actually cost a team the World Series....and yet these Neanderthals KEEP DOING IT. And managers keep allowing it.
      Hit ball. Run hard. This, apparently, is too difficult a concept for today's players to grasp. I guess they're just not paid enough to hustle on every play.

    Seriously though, looks like this is another great job by you and hey, Al Michaels doing baseball is always a plus. The guy was low key just as good with baseball as he is with football.

    Goltz 89 strikeouts in 168 innings pitched - seemingly everyone today gets a strikeout per inning - and of course they no longer work deep into games.

    Goltz I thought was the rally killer but he was snake bit by poor fielding.

      Astros road uniforms were a light gray. See the difference when they are shown in contrast to a Dodger home whites.

    Why was this playoff game even played? The regular season records were tied but the Dodgers won the season series 10-8. Why wasn’t that a tiebreaker? Isn’t that how it works today? It sure does in every other sport. Houston was given an undeserved “2nd chance”.

      @georgelafontaine6045 And wasn't it a coin flip (not the head-to-head record) that gave the Dodgers the home game for the playoff?

    • @ethanweeter2732
      @ethanweeter2732 4 месяца назад +1

      The Reds had the best record in the NL the year after and lost out one the Playoffs because of strike rules where the two halves determined playoffs, not total record.

      @georgelafontaine6045 or in 1946, 1951, 1959 and 1962. It happened more than we realize in that 1946-1962 era- 5 times out of 17 seasons.

      The NFL also had a tiebreaker game from 1933-1966 if two teams finished tied for the conference championship. Also the NFL took a two week break just in case a playoff game was needed

    What's wild is that if they used head-to-head as a tiebreaker, this game wouldn't have been played.
