I’ve been drumming for 15 years, and I love Phish - 65 shows and counting! I think Fishman’s brilliant... But if I had to pick a jam scene favourite, it has to be Joe Russo (of Joe Russo’s Almost Dead, plus a lot more). He is truly in a league of his own. Look up a JRAD Terrapin, where he plays impeccable 32nd-notes at a furious pace, or King Solomon’s Marbles (one of the more “Phishy” Dead songs, in my opinion)... Would love to see your take on that!

    • @alvarhanso6310

Trey started as a drummer. In the mid-90s he had a mini-kit onstage so he could get into drum jams with Fishman and push Mike and Page to lead jams. Also, he is a pretty damn good composer, so he's not just the random guitarist giving the drummer a part to play. He came up with the most complicated part he could for Fish to play, and Fish nailed it. Until they came back in 2002, then it was never quite as good as in 1.0; still really good, but 1999 was really the best time for Limb, IMO. And the 1 is where Gordon hits the two Fs. If you get confused, listen to Cactus play.

I was super into Phish in high school (late 90s). I don't listen to them much anymore, but am not embarrassed to say I still love them. The guys are the most skilled "popular" musicians in the last ~30 years, the shows were an absolute blast, they write great music, they did it all the hard way, and they never let ego get in the way. No shame in loving Phish!

But what I love, is that you can find a stripped down, 4-7 min “rock n roll” version of a song to show a new fan or a 27min extended version with a killer improv or segue. I have tried and backspaced too many times at this point. Their is no describing this band. They will continue to do new outlandish shenanigans for years to come if we are all so lucky. • @honuman39
    @honuman39 3 года назад +12

I always thought Fishman deserved way more credit as a drummer. I don't know if it's about the era he came up as a young player, post classic rock and without RUclips and access to tons of info about technique but as a mostly self taught drummer I think his overall style sounds like it's rooted in a combo of a lot of classic rock drummers. He built on that by adding more jazz and world beats. I remember reading an interview where he said early on with Phish he didn't want to ever play conventional rock beats or the same beat twice for their songs. It's pretty impossible to do that over time but at least he was trying something unique. He has incredible stamina. I don't know how he keeps songs going with consistent power sometimes. If he was coming up today I think he'd be a much more sophisticated player because of the resources available online but it doesn't take away how good a player he is. There's so much creativity, power and dynamics in his drumming. BTW I think the time signature is 8/4

I do agree, that within any scene that big, you are going to have some kind of underbelly. However, I would say that the vast, vast majority of us love the great music these guys have given us, and enjoy giving our thanks in a loving, peaceful manner. We make up very chill crowds. Do many of us enjoy herb and the occasional mushroom? Absolutely! I would still take my sons to a show because it is a chill, good natured vibe. Love to all!

Fish is one of the great under-appreciated drummers in the history of American rock music. You could probably say the same about the rest of the individual band members too. Say what you want about their songwriting/lyrics/vocals/sound, but their chops and compositional skills (particularly when improvising) are unimpeachable.
You should do a feature on Kris Myers from Umphrey's McGee soon too. One of the best drummers currently playing rock music not named Danny Carey for my money. Seen them about 70 times and just constantly in awe with him every single night.

You hit the nail on the head about the Zappa drummers rolled up into one. He can be Chester Thompson at moments, JCB (RIP), Artie Tripp, Wackerman, even hints of Logeman when he wants to play behind the beat. I'm not sure if you know this, but Fishman was selected to make a compilation of his favorite Zappa tunes for CD release. The only other person given that honor was Larry LaLonde, guitarist for Primus. Trey and Fish did a mini tour of Zappa's last run of shows in the northeast in 1988. Great video as always!!

Fishman is a polyrhythm master. Trey was a drummer before he mastered guitar. He and Mike were trying to bust Fishman's balls with an impossible task that he of course nailed. The phrase "Limb by Limb" refers to the fact that the left and right arms and legs all act independently. Four way independence as you call it.

I interviewed him in '96 and while he was very nice and gave me way more time than he had to, it was clear he could not have cared less about my story or what I or anyone else thought of his drumming or his band. I've always had the best time with musicians like that. They play for the love of their instrument and for the love of music. Period. Major respect.

Trey has said the secret to their success and longevity is that the four of them are still friends. Simply stated and makes alot of sense to me on many levels. The absence of ego in how they treat and relate to each other. That's the foundation they have bloomed from. Just on paper itself they have been one of the most successful bands to ever exist. Not to mention their beautiful artistry over this period. In 2024, 41 years later, they are hardly a nostalgia act. It's all about Love. Love is always the answer.

There was a time when this band was very important to me. I got into them before they blew up, saw them in clubs and small theaters. Saw them perform Gamehenge and several Halloween shows as well. Even hung out with them a few times. I've lost count, but I think I saw them around 50 times. Over time, I did outgrow it. I got tired of the long traffic jams getting to the shows, the masses of kids without tickets clogging up the scene and the shift towards funk and away from their early prog vibe killed a lot of my enthusiasm. Also meaningful lyrics are very important to me and that is definitely not their strong suit. All that aside, they helped me gravitate towards other types of music and styles, which made me who I am today. I discovered bands like Pavement and Guided By Voices because of Trey mentioning them in interviews. I wish Fishman would publish his college thesis on drumming, I'm sure there's a wealth of information in there. Great videos sir, keep them coming.

Fishman is one of 4 drummers that have basically taught me how to play over the years. When I was first starting out 25 years ago some of Fishman's beats were almost incomprehensible to me. Anyways, Fishman, Chad Sexton (311), David Garibaldi (Tower of Power), and most recently Adam Deitch (Lettuce) are my biggest influences. As a long time jam band player, Fishman has taught me more than any drum instructor could about feeling the music and just letting go and flowing rather than giving too much thought to what I'm doing or going to do next.

We put glow sticks on a kite so we knew where our tent was. Jam band scene was fun and friendly. I ended up with some great music for my library. Keller Williams writes good songs and has great stage presence. Yonder Mountain String Band ( R.I.P. Jeff Austin ) . Jam bands have a stigma, and I kinda get it but the scene has given us champions like Phish.

It's in 4/4. Fish plays a triplet thing so it feels like 6/8, but it's 4. I'm guitarist that fiddles on drums and I learned this beat. It's actually not that hard (the jam section is a different story. He's filling half the time and I can't come close). My buddy who is a drummer and guitarist and has an amazing sense of time (he used to count the break down from Reba for me - only person I've ever met that does that) and I was playing drums with him on guitar and I played this and was like "yeah, it's in 6/8. I love this beat". He goes, "no. It's in 4". End of conversation. He's right. My favorite part is when the band comes into the jam after the last chorus and Fish's little highhat riff. They come in on the 2. It's very hard to do. I fuck it up every time. But it's a 4/4 beat for sure. The triplets make it groove and move in a jazzy 6/8 way though. Fishman is the man. His ability to drive the jams and then sit back and create that washy atmosphere while the other guys figure out what to do is truly amazing. I might buy a flat ride without a bell for that purpose. Check out Fishman's rig rundown if you have not.

Trey said he named the band Phish because if he were someone coming to see them play he would be watching Fishman, who everyone in the band simply calls “Fish”, the whole show. The shows I’ve been at where I was fortunate enough to be close to the stage I definitely was watching Fishman the entire time. If you see them at a venue that has seating behind the stage, that is the best view for watching him imo, especially if you’re above him a lil bit.

Speaking of a band messing with their drummer with a machine, Morbid Angel told their drummer that the drum machine could play more consistent and faster. Their drummer thought his job was in danger so he practiced enough to where he was faster and better. The band was flabbergasted and told him it was all a joke.

I’m so glad to see someone say this. When he starts the best that leads to THE jam, he keeps that beat for such a long time while all 3 other guys just take it to another dimension. Such a great song, and Fish drove that time machine.

By many accounts the Phish scene started to get really dark in the early 2000s. A lot more pharmaceuticals, ODs, etc. But since the band took 5yrs off to clean themselves up, the scene seems to have gotten better as well. Trey is even working on opening a rehab center.

Most people fail to realize how much of the modern live concert experience as we know it today as far as lighting and sound, is heavily influenced by Phish. They were kind of a test bed for much of the live recording and streaming that are prevalent today. A band that basically played 250 plus shows a year for almost 2 decades provided an excellent opportunity for experimentation and innovation in the lighting and sound industry.

"It's always the guitar player that announces to the world they figured out how to program drum beats and they've got something for ya!" 😂
So true, but remember, Trey was originally a drummer. He played drums in bands all through high school -- and didn't even pick up the guitar until he was 17. Which is just ridiculous considering the level of proficiency he attained in a relatively short time period. Great video.

I love Phish. And I totally agree with your, “they’re just jacking off” comment. My fellow Phish fan friend and I often say, “Wrap it up!” relating it to the old Dave Chappell skit.
And some of their jams are obviously straight fire.

Is Tool technically a jam band? They improvise a lot live that's for sure but does that count as them being a jam band? Let me know what you think.
