With O scale realism in scenery is not required like ho. It never started out that way and not everyone does it. But one thing I learned from my first two n scale layouts when I started is not to buy the rolled grass. Get the woodland scenics powder grass and sprinkle it on if you want realism. And if track noise is an issue use pink styrofoam insulation from the hardware store to keep track noise down. Learned these two things when I was starting out

Super. The locomotive looks like an EMD F-7A, but has features that say F-3A and F-9A, at least on my small phone screen. Does Menards identify what model it is, or do they just say it is an Atchison, Topeka, & Santa Fe or Chicago & North Western cab diesel locomotive? I have some fifty year old F units, bought new by me, still operating on my railroad, both inside and outside, and I hope your locomotives last just as long, and make you just as happy as mine have. Cheers, have fun, and hello from the Tracy Mountain Railway in Colorado. 💙 T.E.N.

I don’t know what you are running for a transformer but when you get shorts like a derail turn the power off before you find out what is causing the issue. You can burn out a sound board by leaving the power on till you fix the issue. Judging by the way your transformer doesn’t kick out I am assuming it is an older post war unit. I would suggest you run your positive to each track through a 5 amp automotive circuit breaker. They are inexpensive and will really help with protecting the electronics in your locomotives and even those new switch machines.

Menards engines are good for people on a budget and younger model railroaders. I myself don’t buy anything from Menards. Im spoiled by the superior Quality of MTH Trains, Atlas, and Lionel. The Menards engines look fine though

Menards I thought would be a good idea for me I wasn’t sure if I wanted to go all in on a layout this is my first layout and it turns out I really like it . So spending several hundred to a thousand dollars on a locomotive didn’t sound to intelligent to me and just put it in a box and never use again.
