***** i definitely see what you mean. i feel like twenty one pilots has to sacrifice some musical/artistic license to cater to their audience because it's such a wide range of people. i think those who connect the most with their lyrics understand that the "... depressed outsider in public schools" character is more like a fictitious culmination of characteristics than a single-bodied reality. therefor, i think they appreciate that tyler's lyrics because they are are definitely his own, and from his own experiences. not to get too intellectual but there's an essay written by modernist poet amy lowell called "the new manner in modern poetry" which i actually think captures twenty one pilots' music quite well. i don't expect you to read it, i'm just a massive english nerd, but the gist is that by keeping writing genuine and realistic the writing is ultimately more universal; she also mentions something about finding the poetic in the unpoetic, rather than altering reality to suit ideals of what emotions should look like. idk that's just sort of my take on their popularity and stuff. i think twenty one pilots has room to grow but i appreciate their dedication to maintaining honesty in their music. well, that and their originality. anyway i got massively off track lol but i hope cage the elephant isn't like nirvana in the sense you mentioned because i think while they're music is a little off path for mainstream, it's difficult to deny the emotion (in my opinion the emotion in their songs always seems widely relatable) in their sound and lyrics, even if it's not blatantly stated. god i'm sorry for wasting your time haha i just get so excited about theorizing about music and artists :p

***** sorry i think i just went from one thought to another without clarifying, i meant that nirvana is seen differently now than they were when they were together. not necessarily meaning they were or are mainstream, and certainly not that they were sellouts. what i intended to say was that their fan group has changed, who listens to them, how they relate, thoughts on lyrics and sound, etc. to create divisions on why they like nirvana and what they think of other fans. so like in the sense that i hope cage doesn't follow that path, i mean that i hope their fans will unite on opinions of cage (and why they're fans) years after their breakup (knock on wood that they won't break up anytime soon), instead of sort of dividing over who listened to them at their prime and who listens to them after their breakup.
as for twenty one pilots, i certainly agree with you on pretty much all of it, although, i do want to interject that maybe tyler's lyrics aren't really "preachy" but are trying to pass on what he has learned/realized/survived in his own experiences. i guess i mean that it's not so much a leader preaching as it is a member of the group setting an example (of what to do with negativity, that just surviving is okay, that him and a lot of other people have serious internal/mental problems and while they are a speedbump they aren't a roadblock, etc. their main causes/beliefs) idek if any of that made sense but yeah.

Nah man, made perfect sense. Ya I can def see what you're saying about Tyler too.. Gotta think abt it some more, but I can see what you're saying. Maybe we just have different tolerances for what "preachy" is? But I see your point about being part of a group and sharing his experiences

But ya your comment definitely made sense. You sorta thought I was coming at nirvana in this pessimistic way about their talent and emotional rawness (or trancendence)
