The Prophecy is a devastating song. It doesn’t get enough appreciation. Taylor and Travis were a thing when TTPD came out and I think it softened the blow, but think about where she was when she wrote this song. End of a long relationship, end of the short but impactful relationship with MH. It’s very vulnerable. Thanks for sharing your own vulnerable thoughts.
I agree with you. I just love this song and I think it’s one of her most dark and honest songs ever. It’s beautifully written, vulnerable and personally relatable.
“Every month for like a week you just gotta be in pain, what’s that about?” EXACTLY. Don’t be embarrassed to talk about periods. Men need to know more about it. It’s really painful for lots of women.
Was just about to say the same thing! I thought it was refreshing to hear a man bring it up and ask some questions. Too many are so ignorant or reluctant or eeked out to even think about this huge part of women’s lives, let alone bring it up
I think greige means grey-beige I've always read this song as her trying to reckon her two dreams - being the world's biggest star (via discecting her love lives) and finding her soulmate (who ultimately might reject her because of the very nature of her career). Love you also mentioned how menstruation plays a factor in this theme for women.
love this comment and insight! additionally, greige is also what the retail production industry calls materials for clothing before it’s been dyed or colored at all. so you could say that these textiles are in their natural or unfinished state. you could kind of consider greige a “blank slate” in the materials world.
I agree. I think she felt at this time she couldn't have both. I think Joe couldn't deal with her fame and she thought the industry would get tired of her (miss Americana quotes). This would have meant her and Joe could have ridden off into the sunset (think of the lakes). During lockdown she got what she thought she wanted and realized that's not what she wanted at all. She put out 5 albums in a little over two years (including TVS), and her relationship fell apart. Then MH which we know how much hope she had held onto for that for a decade, and I think her fame had a big role in that falling apart.
This song always always gets me in the feels, mainly because Taylor sounds disheartened regarding love. Like maybe she had been in a recent relationship that she thought was “the one”, but it fell apart and now she’s alone again. She’s figured out how to be the biggest recording artist in the world, but not the recipe for long lasting love. And then she has to wonder -can her level of fame and love exist together? Like, am I screwed? Did I seal my fate when I decided to pursue my first love with such a passion that someone to share my life with is now unattainable? It’s a theme she’s explored before, but with this song there’s such an underlying feeling of almost desperation, or fear for sure. She might wonder sometimes if she sold her soul to gods of fame….or can she speak to someone about changing that? As she says in the song! Great reaction…it’s cool when lyrics lead to self reflection.
That’s what’s really amazing about Taylor’s songwriting. She writes quite personally but somehow writes in a way where we can still apply it to our own lives and stories and that’s why we can’t get enough.
I’ll never forget my first couple listens of this song. The first time I was in a daze but once the lyrics actually hit me I ugly cried for like 15 minutes & I’m happily married 😂😂❤ it just hit me so hard & I think to date this is one of her most beautiful & vulnerable songs she’s ever written
Also - a side note, before you do listen to the album as a whole, I suggest reading Taylor’s prologue she wrote for the album. Maybe will help give you an idea where her headspace was while making the album
I enjoy your videos so much. I could listen to your thoughts and interpretations for hours on end. Your voice is quite soothing and your thinking process is great. I am glad that you have discovered the genius that is Taylor Swift. This song is one of my favorites. Keep on keepin on, man!! 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻
I think my favorite parts of this song are the lines "...And I sound like an infant, feeling like the very last drops of an ink pen..." and "...even statues crumble when they're made to wait..." ❤ beautifully sad song, and she did a mash-up recently with this song and another called This Love(1989 song) on tour during the accoustic set, and it was AMAZING❣️
✨Thanks, Izzy, great analysis as always! It's always nice to see you light up before the end of the first verse. 🧡 A few short lines of her lyrics are like the opening chapter to a good book. But being so personal and vulnerable, they serve more as a soundtrack of her life, when you understand more of the context. I struggle with, "Is she a pop singer?" The interconnected stories and depth of the lyrics just feel so different than what I expect in pop. Thanks, Izzy!
Thanks for the reaction. Greige - between grey and beige. This song is so filled with such yearning. The bit about being surrendered by people that make you feel lonely, 😞.
As sad as this song is I just love it., Taylor is a brilliant songwriter and this is such a impactful one. It really hits the loneliness and sadness of not being able to find someone who cares for you. To be alone. This is her deepest feelings. Her relationship with Joe, after 6 years as boyfriend and girlfriend, fell apart. It was for some time but, after it finally ended for good she took up with Matty Healy. A rebound but, she was deeply hurt by being ghosted by him after a few weeks of hanging out. At 33 she felt it would never be. She would be alone her whole life and never find someone who loved her for herself and not her fame or money. Or reject her for the same. She would never just find a normal relationship where she was accepted just for her. Thankfully, a few months later she started a new relationship but, was guarded at first. However he became the guy who brought happiness back in her life, Brought out the silly side and fun loving side. Who repaired her damaged self esteem. Taught her to love life and to feel happy and good about self.
Hi. As you know now, Taylor takes you places with her lyrics, sometimes really hard, raw places. Loneliness and the need to share the experience of life are a tough place to go to. Really like your interpretation of her stories and lyrics and the emotions your going through whilst hearing Taylor. Taylor the preacher.
I'm so happy that ttpd came out when Taylor was already with Travis cause I've been even sadder for her and how she felt in this moment of her life. She's a hopeless romantic and I really hope he's the one for her and she gets everything she wants
I love the line “I got cursed like Eve got bitten” because Eve didn’t get bitten, she was tempted by the snake and bit the forbidden fruit and was punished for it. She’s saying she chose wrong and brought this on herself. What you were saying about things finding you when you’re not looking for them is funny because summer 2023 when she wrote this, she went on vacation with her friends and they were all posting about having a “single girl summer” then literally the next day her now boyfriend showed up to her show trying to meet her 😂
"and it was WRITTEN, I got cursed like Eve got bitten," which adds a layer or two. media? twitter? herself? it makes you question if eve bit or was bitten due to who wrote the story
@ “And it was written” as a phrase usually refers to religious text so I think in this context it’s referring to the Bible because of the Eve reference and also the prophecy.
@ it IS, 100%, yet the inclusion of Taylor introduces doubt about if there was bias in how stories about Taylor were written, and if so, was the story of Eve written with bias in the Bible? So she's questioning whether she was to blame and at the same time calling attention to bias in writing and religious overtones conveying how women have been vilified since biblical times (and before).
Hi! Good morning! This is one of my favorites and I feel is most relatable to everyone at some stage in their lives. I can’t cry before work. I will be back later. Great great song and lyrics. This is my fav rn. ❤
Taylor is a great story teller, and when she writes with this tone she calls it songs she writes with a proverbial fountain pen. So a bit of like old classic desaturated vibe to it. The movie scene I saw in my mind while listening goes like this: a very desperate lonely woman who probably recently got hurt and is looking for answers from seers or fortune tellers. The man who hurt her gave her so much excitement, he was hard to pin down but she thought she was able to. But it didn’t end well. the pain she felt she metaphorically describes as being pricked with a poisoned needle, drawing her blood, but instead of staying away, she still dreams of him. She is lonely. She wanted to hear a fortune teller say it would be ok, he will be back, but instead she was given a sad prophesy. That he found another already. He chose someone else. That it’s not meant to be and what she wants cannot happen. A greater woman lesser woman dynamic highlights her awareness of how desperate she is. A greater woman wouldn’t beg, she knew that strongly, but she still decides to throw her pride away and throw her self to the ground to the powers that be. The whole song is a pleading to the gods. Again and again. She might not have much (she used her last coins to give to the seer to have her fortune read, as she said in her lyrics, so it means she is not affluent), but she is not asking for money. She just wants love. She begs and begs. please change this prophecy. Please. She even ends the song with a gutted “please”. It’s very cinematic. Thank you Izzy for allowing me to experience this song again for the first time! Your voice is so relaxing, it’s like asmr 😅 I always get sleepy after
Brilliant song, lyrics and musical construct, top-tier in my opinion. Mini-rant: When people dismiss this woman out of hand point them to this one. If they can't appreciate it perhaps its imagery goes right over their heads. Or, sometimes I think of it this way: It's like using facts to try to get through to someone with a fixed political position. You'll rarely get through. But since poetry is not for everyone and never was, why can't they just leave it at that? How do people have opinions on something about which they know nothing? Nice reaction to a fine song, thank you. Oh, and I do like the subtlety of the strings very much! I just think it works here.
This song roundhouses me right in the throat. The first time I heard it was on release night, 26 songs deep I wasn’t able to process what I was hearing I just cried. -Greige a mix of grey and beige, all the colour drained out, the saddest palette.
Hi Izzy! Thanks for this analysis! This is the song that hits so close to home that I often don't listen to it. I think every fan of Taylor has a song that feels like it was written just for them. This is mine. Im excited to listen to the full album with you. Please do it in order. I learned that some of the songs take on a more intense feeling based on where they fall on the album...it truly is a journey.
Sleeping Beauty fairy tale, in brief: she pricks her finger on the needle poisoned by her Wicked Fairy Godmother, to put her into a death like sleep that lasts until she’s kissed by a prince. Something supposed to have been made impossible, because her castle is surrounded by a virtually impenetrable hedge of thorns. Her godmother believes, therefore that she’ll sleep, like death, will be forever. That was the price her parents (the King & Queen) paid for not inviting Maleficent to the Christening when Beauty was a baby. The spinning wheel & its needle was hidden away by the King, after it was cursed, till it was found by Beauty while (as a teenager) she was exploring the huge castle she lived in. She didn’t know what it was, since all needles had been banished from the castle, hence she didn’t know not to touch it. Love from Annie, in Cornwall, 🙂🌸
this is such a sad song, i always cry when i listen to it. because i can relate, i sometimes feel like this is my last chance to live some things and i am not living them, so sometimes i lose hope and give up, but this song reminds me i have to keep persuing those things, some day i will get to live them. anyway i love taylor so much, she is my life, thanks for listening to this song! ❤
My internal head cannon is she wrote this song last summer in the middle of her “broken heart summer” and because of it she was willing to take a chance on a cocky American football player who is nothing like her previous boyfriends. And it seems to be working out for her so far
My goodness you are a treasure. Don’t ever stop your random musings between the song lyrics. This gorgeous song absolutely speaks to a woman’s biological clock…whether or not you want to become a mother. Women have an expiration date in society where we become less desirable and less seen. It doesn’t matter that Taylor is a nearly 6ft tall Barbie goddess. Eventually all the men her age will be looking for someone 10 years younger. This fear is instilled in us almost subliminally. She had also been in a relationship from about 27-34, which are prime marriage and baby-having years. I can only imagine that breaking up at that time had to have an effect on her outlook. That was followed by a brief thrilling and ultimately toxic rebound relationship which clearly messed her up. I hope she’s happy and fulfilled now. I wouldn’t choose Travis for her but sometimes just being loved by a very nice man is exactly what you need.
Someone mentioned that greige is gray with all blue removed. Taylor frequently used the color blue to refer to Joe who apparently dealt with depression. She's just a genius, that one word means so much.
Periods are incredibly painful the first 2 days and especially bad the first day. You are writhing in pain as your body is pushing out and shedding the blood - mucosal tissue and inner lining of the uterus... essentially mimicking labour contractions deep inside your uterus.
I was looking through the comments before I finished the video and this comment seemed so random 😂😂 but yeah the first day is always just the worst. After the 2nd-3rd day it's more annoying than painful but I have friends who don't have that much pain so it's all relative
@@artlessdoodle Yes definitely a little random I admit but he seemed to want to know. I'm like you - mostly suffering the first day, but my room mate used to throw up and take Novonaprox to get through it.
Yeah if you love the way this song was written the ttpd album especially the anthology has the same vibe and brilliant writings as well. I personally love the black dog and how did it end. But all of the songs there are worth the listen :) i think you would love Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus..
I haven’t read the comments yet, I’m commenting while watching but the “eve” line refers to the fact that the snakes convinces eve to eat the apple and that brought a curse upon eve to live a human life and give birth in pain. So she’s saying that she feels like she’s cursed to suffer and feel pain too. Live eve was cursed. It was the punishment from god. So she’s asking “am I being punished too”? That’s also why she then cries to the sky for am answer, it’s like she’s asking god if she’ll ever have love.
I love ADHD Izzy going from the idea of fate and soulmates to periods and pains 😂 Also, one said around the comments that she was already with Travis when this song came out and that kinda make it go a little unnoticed, but it did happened to her again and again , thinking she finally found "it" but no. 😢
I believe Travis came into Taylor’s life to save her, from so much she had endured, relationships that she invested in, the users that came along as well, her fame got in the way, they ran , I haven’t seen Taylor this confident today, ever before, I’m truly happy for her, the best way to release is via lyrics, it’s healing and healing she needed! I cannot wait to see what she achieves next!
Wanted you to know that I heard Exile sing and play alone, think it was called Shorty Legs. Sorry been in hospital long.time so I'm behind. ❤She was sheltered in early life. but then changedl.
To hear that Taylor used to think like this is just heartbreaking. Who wouldn’t want to keep her company and be her partner? She’s so much more than a singer. Intelligent, independent, funny, caring, dedicated, humble, honest… all of the things that someone would want in a relationship. It’s sad that she’s 34 and because she’s so driven, the men just don’t want to be around the huge spotlight that comes with being around or with Taylor. She’s very healthy and fit and obviously extremely beautiful. Are men that threatened by a woman who is ridiculously attractive but also successful?? I can’t imagine how that can happen; she’s just such a GOOD person. I’d think the many positives would outweigh the negatives of her fame. I hope that she finds her happy ending but I certainly don’t think it’ll be with a man who cannot spell nor does he even read books. Taylor’s IQ is 160 - she stays busy because she loves it and she has the bandwidth to do more than one thing at a time. Fabulous song on her magnificent Anthology. ❤

Taylor is a great story teller, and when she writes with this tone she calls it songs she writes with a proverbial fountain pen. So a bit of like old classic desaturated vibe to it.
You realize this was free therapy? I see you ❤
I realise! Love to ya!
You’re awesome. Thanks for your insights
Thanks, Cindy!
Might have posted this already, but griege=gray plus beige. This sometime depressive immediately saw this particular shade
I love ADHD Izzy going from the idea of fate and soulmates to periods and pains 😂
Also, one said around the comments that she was already with Travis when this song came out and that kinda make it go a little unnoticed, but it did happened to her again and again , thinking she finally found "it" but no. 😢
Haha! I never thought of it as ADHD but it may be. My mind certainly wanders a lot.
Yes, react to the album all the way through, from start to finish, even to the tracks you’ve already listened and reacted to🤍🤍🤍
I believe Travis came into Taylor’s life to save her, from so much she had endured, relationships that she invested in, the users that came along as well, her fame got in the way, they ran , I haven’t seen Taylor this confident today, ever before, I’m truly happy for her, the best way to release is via lyrics, it’s healing and healing she needed! I cannot wait to see what she achieves next!
People used to say that Joe saved her from the world and herself. Even in the Fandom, we can perpetuate misogynistic values in our own lore.
Love your reaction. I think greige means grey/beige. Such a sad song but I hope she is happy now with Travis.
Amo essa música ❤
Wanted you to know that I heard Exile sing and play alone, think it was called Shorty Legs. Sorry been in hospital long.time so I'm behind. ❤She was sheltered in early life. but then changedl.
Get well soon, Terry!
Love your reaction, as always……but now I need to watch sleeping beauty!😂
greige is just a combo of gray and beige
Greige Is a combination of gray and beige colors, a slightly clearer dark color, like you look shiny but most of you is dark and somber 🥹
Gray-beige is griege
I guess my brain somehow got it. But don’t feel bad. Most people didn’t go to shades of depression
Greige is the color between beige and gray.
nice
Have you reacted to ‘you’re on your own kid’ yet? What you talk on at the ~8 minute mark screams that song
I did it here; ruclips.net/video/4hnwUtIzoDg/видео.html
22:12 no cause I know some women who don’t feel any pain but it hurts a lot for me,it just depends I guess lol
Thanks for sharing about it. Is it the same for you every month or does it vary?
@ it’s the same for me every month sadly
Please react to "The Epiphany"
Grey/Beige Greige is often used to describe bland interiors. Monochromatic to the point of banality.
🕸️🕷️ ❤

Griege….the color of the sheet in the video. Gray/Beige. Flat…boring…sad…
