A Japamala or mala (Sanskrit:माला; mālā, meaning 'garland') is a string of prayer beads commonly used in Hinduism, Jainism, Sikhism, Buddhism, and other traditions for the spiritual practice known in Sanskrit as japa. They are similar to other forms of prayer beads used in various world religions and sometimes referred to in English as a "rosary".
The main body of a mala is usually 108 beads, though other numbers are also used. In addition, there is often a 109th bead (often of a distinctive size or colour) and/or tassle and sometimes there are additional beads which may be decorative or used for counting rounds. Malas are used for keeping count while reciting, chanting, or mentally repeating a mantra or the name or names of a deity.

મહારાજે પ્રથમ નિત્યાનંદ સ્વામીને પોતાનું પુરુષોત્તમપણું કહેલું: તે જ્યારે સત્સંગિજીવન ગ્રંથ કર્યો; ત્યારે ઉપાસનાનો પ્રસંગ નાખ્યો; તેમાં શ્રીકૃષ્ણની ઉપમા દેવા માંડી; ત્યારે સ્વામી કહે: જે ‘બાદશાહને કાંઈ ચાકરની ઉપમા દેવાય ? ન દેવાય એવી રીતે સાત દિવસ લગી કજિયો ચાલ્યો. ત્યારે મહારાજ કહે: જે ‘એમ જ લખાય, તમે શું જાણો ? ને કેટલુંક ખીજ્યા, તો પણ ન માન્યું ને કહ્યું જે ‘ચરિત્ર મેળવો, જે મહારાજે કીધાં છે તે તેણે કીધાં છે? એમ કેટલુંક થયું ને એકલા કાઢ્યા ને મહારાજ પણ બીજા સાધુ ભેળા ભળી ગયા; તો પણ ન માન્યું. પછી મહારાજે કહ્યું જે ‘અમારું રહસ્ય આ સાધુ જાણે છે. એમ કહીને નિત્યાનંદ સ્વામીને હાર આપ્યો અને સ્વપ્નમાં ગોપાળાનંદ સ્વામીને મહારાજે કહ્યું: ‘જે અમારું પુરુષોત્તમપણું નહિ પ્રવર્તાવો, તો આ ને આ દેહમાં હજાર વર્ષ સુધી રાખશું. પછી સ્વામી કહે: મને પણ મહારાજે કહ્યું હતું ને ખરડામાંથી પણ જાણ્યું ને મોર્યથી પણ જાણતા હતા; તે મેં ઉઘાડી વાત સભામાં કરવા માંડી, ત્યારે સાધુ સૌ કહે: ‘તુંને કોણે કહ્યું છે જે તું કહે છે ? ત્યારે મેં કહ્યું જે: સ્વામિનારાયણે કહ્યું છે, બીજો કોણ કહેશે? ને મહારાજે મધ્યના નવમા વચનામૃતમાં, (છે. પ્ર.૩૮મું) સાંખ્યાદિકનામાં, (મધ્ય પ્ર.નું ૧૩) તેરનામાં ને લોયાના ચૌદનામાં એ આદિક ઘણાકમાં કહ્યું છે. ૩૩ . .. ...
