Nice affordable haul and servicing. I think the music idea you had is a good one and you could even have background music during the running sessions from "The Gnomes Legs". Great Video, Jersey Bill
lovely purchases there my very first loco was the hornby hst and still have it now i did buy another one a few years ago that was in immaculate condition also to try the cd motor conversion and make it digital as a cheaper way of having a digital loco and sadly it didn't really work out, the loco worked but it had no power to pull 2 coaches and a driving trailer, keep up the good work. Tom
i use the motors from old play station controllers in the hornby ringfield can pick them up cheap at car boots but i also convert dummy to power car found its more reliable running
Great additions to your collection Bill. Think it was the last Falkirk exhibition I also picked up an HST set and extra coaches which runs well too and was also a good price! Sorry to have missed you this year…
Good purchases, a quick clean and they run absolutely fine. Also nice to see them running together Was at Falkirk exhibition on Saturday and got some good stuff myself, probably passed you several times without realising, some very nice layouts
Bill what i have found converting the Hornby ring field with a cd motor is that you need to adjust the back to back to remove the noise ignoring the 14.1 dimension just adjust till it disappears. Also i have found some motors from china that a very high torque.
Lovely to meet you on Saturday morning at Falkirk Model Rail. There were a few good bargains to be had there and I was lucky to pick up a Hornby night mail set still in the box from 1970-1972 for £35. Runs perfect...
Hi Bill. Looking forward to hearing your ringfield CD motors for hornbys. I had a class 37 and the ring field motor was in a bad way. So perfect for going for a CD motor upgrade. Fitting it went well....but even to this day the thing will slow down VERY badly at the slightest corner. Wheel spacing is perfect. Got a new wheel set and new gears for it (even got new wheel shaft for the drive motors). Nothing made a difference. Mines also makes a whining noise and cannot do any more with it. Spent hours and hours on it. But strongly believe they just don't have much torque at all. Anyone else noticed these CD motors only for hornby models having very poor torque??
I know your pain on the hst OOBill, I moved from my parents house into my own flat and decided to pick up the hobby again after a 30 year respite, but since space is limited I started n-gauge. I managed to assemble quite the collection of mainline British loco's and rolling stock and some continental trains as well. But the one thin I don't seem to find brand new or rarely second-hand are n-gauge HST 22's while new liveries of the HST125 are being announced like every few months
Good buys at exhibition, a quick fix for LED's on HST, is take out diodes, wire in a 2 colour ( red/white) 12 volt bulb in place of old bulb, and hey presto you have directional lights through the old lenses, not quite as bright as fitting through the body, but they work!! Maybe this is not new to you. Keep up the good videos, always watch them. Regards, Ray in Norfolk
I went to Falkirk on Sunday. It's a good little exhibition, plenty of variety of layouts and good vendor support. I only bought paint supplies and a couple of vehicles, no bargain locos! Cheers
Two good finds Bill and I have both. I lost one of the tiny springs and had to wait until family came over so I could have it sent to Glasgow first. Both the HST’s and Class 29 run great Another terrific tutorial
Excellent video Bill. I went to Sandown Park last week but it was 97% toys and 3% model trains. Waiting for Erith now on 26th Jan. I bought a nice 29 recently at Kempton Park fair for £25 😊
I like the idea of original music to a modelling project ( metcalfe or similar) Once again I love all your videos I can’t wait to hear how your layout is progressing and see new developments
Lovely HST there. Your videos about fettling Hornby ringfield motors gave me the nudge get my old HST running again some months ago. Good idea to overlay your Metcalfe building kits with original music. Have you considered releasing your tracks on Spotify etc?
Thanks very much for the heads up on replacement CD motors for Hornby, I have a, probably, 40 year old HST, it's never run well, unlike the Lima version it can't haul a full rake, I had been thinking about a CD motor for it, there's an awful lot of them out there, they can't all be good, but I'm going to hang fire for now, thanks again.
Go for the Strathpeffer Junction kit, good for 4 or 5 coaches. I have a 10 car set, but I have powered both ends, added LED directional lights and dcc. Goes like stink.
Tried the CD motors but not impressed, much prefer the original motor to be fair. Love the Hornby class 29 and 25 as they are just right for a smaller layout, and seems like you paid a decent price for the HST and class 29. 👍😉
19:29 Two intrepid mountain bikers approached the cave of Caerbannog. "Aw look at the cute lickle bunny wabbit with his long white ears, fluffy tail..." "Red gleaming eyes and, er long sharp teeth?" continued his companion "Arghhh! it's the KILLER BUNNY!!!" "Right, lucky I brought the Holy Handgrenade of Antioch..."
Hi Bill, I sent a message a while back on your other C29 repair. The one you have here is my setup with all wheels with pickups! I have some questions. 1. My 29 is a poor runner, but the wheels are an odd colour, more of a brass/copper brown. I have cleaned and cleaned without success. I notice yours has more conventional silver wheels. 2. with both bogies picking up power from both rails, is this going to cause issues - particularly shorts - when running over points? I dont use insulated plates on my layout which is dcc using hornby points... thanks
Sounds like your wheels have lost their plating. Should still run OK though. However, it tells me the model maybe has a very high mileage and there could be wear to the gears and spindles. Or the magnet is maybe a rubber one and out of shape. Or the motor needs a proper overhaul. Pickups from both rails won't cause a short unless there's a fault somewhere. The more pickups the better. But having pickups on wheels with traction tyres is daft.
You do know we are all now watching right to the very end to catch the music don’t you? Love it, and another really interesting video, thank you Bill.
If we only knew more about those fancy drawings…

Great stuff Bill . The LED upgrade on the early HST's which you said you may do is certainly a really worthwhile improvement .
Hi Bill. Great video yet again. Just thinking what about a short running session with some of your stock. Together with some Christmas music 🎄🎅

The layout looks great :)
The 29 you got a bargain there.....Is a 2001 R2238A model :D :D :D
The 2001 list price was £39.99....The 3 on eBay currently are between £70-80

What are the chances of a Scotrail HST landing on your layout now that you have mentioned your wish. Many thanks again for your efforts.
Both look like great bargains especially the diesel locomotive

great things you got thanks lee
Great buys Bill and nice prices 👍
Totally agree ,its nice to see the prices for the locos, and as Bill said good prices
Where did you get the magnetic couplings for your HST from. Like fit some to my HST

I got some good H0e bargains on the Saturday. I was with Scoons (Scottish 009s)
Your "new" Class 29 looks better with the smaller amount of yellow on the ends. My one has full yellow ends.
Always enjoy a 00Bill video. 👍
A great buy Bill, trust a canny scott to sniff out a bargain 😁👍
you need to put a powered power car at both ends of your hst then it is prototypical
Hi , bill , top stuff as usual , are you going to the Paisley show this week , cheers m Feank .
Not this year I'm afraid. Next show will be MRS in February.
Maybe you could play "I've Been Working on the Railroad"?
